Identification of Pseudomonas strains for the biological control of soybean red crown root rot.

Soybean red crown root rot (RCR), caused by the soil-borne fungal pathogen, Calonectria ilicicola, is the most destructive disease affecting soybean production in Japan. To date, no resistant cultivars or effective fungicides have been developed to control this disease. In this study, we evaluated 13 bacterial strains to determine their efficacy in controlling C. ilicicola. We first investigated whether the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by the bacterial strains exhibited any antifungal activity against C. ilicicola using the double-plate chamber method. The results showed that VOCs

Large Conformational Change in the Isomerization of Flexible Crown Ether Observed at Low Temperature.

The dynamic processes of conformational changes of supramolecules are important to understand the motion in synthetic supramolecules. Although a host-guest complex is the most basic supramolecule, a detailed mechanism of its conformational changes has rarely been studied. Here, we observed the large conformational change of a dibenzo-24-crown-8 complex with four guest ions (Ag+, Na+, K+, and NH4+) at low temperature in the gas phase. The isomerization between the two types of conformers, which have different distances between the two benzene rings, proceeds even at 86 K. Using variable-tempera

Spontaneous healing of complicated crown-root fractures in children: Two case reports.

BACKGROUND: Complicated crown-root fracture is considered a severe dental trauma and is unlikely to heal without treatment. Usually, dentists have to remove the loose coronal fragment of the fractured tooth and treat the remaining part with multidisciplinary approaches. However, we observed spontaneous healing of fracture in two pediatric cases with a history of complicated crown-root fractures over 4 years ago. CASE SUMMARY: In case 1, a 12-year-old boy complained of pain at tooth 11 following an accidental fall 1 d ago. Clinical examination showed a crack line on the crown of tooth 11. Cone

A Review of Human Coronaviruses' Receptors: The Host-Cell Targets for the Crown Bearing Viruses.

A novel human coronavirus prompted considerable worry at the end of the year 2019. Now, it represents a significant global health and economic burden. The newly emerged coronavirus disease caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the primary reason for the COVID-19 global pandemic. According to recent global figures, COVID-19 has caused approximately 243.3 million illnesses and 4.9 million deaths. Several human cell receptors are involved in the virus identification of the host cells and entering them. Hence, understanding how the virus binds to host-cell r

Ion shuttling between emulsion droplets by crown ether modified gold nanoparticles.

Selective unidirectional transport of barium ions between droplets in a water-in-chloroform emulsion is demonstrated. Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) modified with a thiolated crown ether act as barium ion complexing shuttles that carry the ions from one population of droplets (source) to another (target). This process is driven by a steep barium ion concentration gradient between source and target droplets. The concentration of barium ions in the target droplets is kept low at all times by the precipitation of insoluble barium sulfate. A potential role of electrostatically coupled secondary process

Comparison of three protocols for the management of re-fracture of teeth with uncomplicated crown fractures.

BACKGROUND: Crown fractures restored by fragment reattachment are liable to re-fracture, which may cause fragment dislodgement. There is a paucity of literature regarding management of fragment reattachment cases following a further fracture. Hence the aim of the present in-vitro study was to evaluate and compare the efficacy of three different management protocols for such scenarios. METHODOLOGY: Eighty maxillary bovine incisors without structural deformity and with similar dimensions were fractured as per the standard protocol. They were subjected to drying for 24 hours and the fragments we

Long-term outcome of adhesive fragment reattachment in crown-root fractured teeth.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Adhesive fragment reattachment (AFR) is one treatment option for crown-root fractured teeth. However, there are no studies investigating the long-term outcome of this approach. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the long-term outcome of AFR and periodontal health in crown-root fractured teeth by assessing complications and periodontal status. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data regarding 41 patients with 51 traumatized teeth (TT) were included. Periodontal health was assessed by recording the pocket probing depth (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL), bleeding on pr

Self-assembly behaviors of perylene- and naphthalene-crown macrocycle conjugates in aqueous medium.

The synthesis of conjugates of perylene diimide (PDI) and naphthalene diimide (NDI) modified with two benzo-21-crown-7 ethers (B21C7) are herein described. Their self-assembly behavior in various solvents was investigated particularly in aqueous medium, due to the recently discovered hydrophilic properties of B21C7 crown macrocycle. An unexpected fluorescence quenching phenomenon was observed in the PDI-B21C7 macrocycle conjugate in chloroform. The detailed UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectra of these PDI/NDI derivatives in different solvents as well as their morphologies were investiga

Tooth Crown Morphology in Turner and Klinefelter Syndrome Individuals from a Croatian Sample.

OBJECTIVE: Turner syndrome (TS) and Klinefelter syndrome (KS) represent the two most common X chromosome aneuploidies, each associated with systemic disruptions to growth and development. Effects of these conditions on tooth crown morphology are explored in a sample of Croatian individuals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample included 57 TS, 37 KS and 88 control individuals. Dental crown morphology was scored on dental casts according to the Turner-Scott Dental Anthropology System. RESULTS: Incisor shoveling and the hypocone were significantly different between TS individuals and both control

Influence of long and short arms of X chromosome on maxillary molar crown morphology.

Although genes on the human X chromosome reportedly influence tooth crown morphology, little is known about X chromosome activation or inactivation systems relevant to morphological variations. We assessed the relationships between tooth crown size and crown morphological traits in females with Turner syndrome, the variants of which include complete absence of one X chromosome, lack of the short arm (Xp), or duplication of the long arms (Xq), and then estimated the functions of Xp and Xq in the process of unilateral X chromosome inactivation during tooth crown development. The mesiodistal and

Characterization of deciduous teeth stem cells isolated from crown dental pulp.

BACKGROUND/AIM: The last decade has been profoundly marked by persistent attempts to use ex vivo expanded and manipulated mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), as a tool in different types of regenerative therapy. In the present study we described immunophenotype and the proliferative and differentiation potential of cells isolated from pulp remnants of exfoliated deciduous teeth in the final phase of root resorption. METHODS: The initial adherent cell population from five donors was obtained by the outgrowth method. Colony forming unit-fibroblast (CFU-F) assay was performed in passage one. Cell exp

Biparietal diameter-to-crown-rump length disproportion in first-trimester fetuses with holoprosencephaly.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether the biparietal diameter measurement is altered in first-trimester fetuses with holoprosencephaly. METHODS: Cases of holoprosencephaly were collected retrospectively from 4 fetal medicine centers, and first-trimester biparietal diameter measurements were reviewed. The diagnosis of holoprosencephaly was established sonographically by the detection of abnormal choroid plexus morphologic characteristics (absent "butterfly" sign) and the identification of a monoventricular cerebral cavity on axial views of the fetal brain. The proportion of fetuses with biparietal

Characterization of mesenchymal progenitor cells in crown and root pulp from human mesiodentes.

OBJECTIVE: Mesiodentes are usually found in the central position of the upper or lower jaw as supernumerary teeth. Here, we obtained 10 mesiodentes and three permanent teeth (PT) and separated the dental pulp (DP) from these into crown and root portions. We then characterized and compared the isolated crown portion-derived cells (crown cells) with root portion-derived cells (root cells) using a range of in vitro assays. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Crown cells and root cells were examined for cell surface marker expression, colony-forming unit-fibroblast (CFU-F), cell proliferation, cell cycle char

Surgical intervention for treating an extensive internal resorption with unfavorable crown-to-root ratio.

Internal resorption is a rare lesion in permanent teeth. Managing perforating internal resorption is a great challenge for dentists. This report presents a successful surgical treatment of a maxillary central incisor that had extensive root perforation due to internal resorption. After unsuccessful nonsurgical approach, during surgical intervention apical part of the resorption defect was removed and the coronal part was filled with mineral trioxide aggregate. Three years later the tooth was symptom free with normal mobility and pocket depth despite unfavorable crown-to-root ratio. This case r

Esthetic and endodontic management of a deep crown-root fracture of a maxillary central incisor.

Treatment of trauma to anterior teeth should aim at preserving the affected teeth so as to restore function and esthetic appearance. Recently, patients have come to expect adequate esthetics immediately after trauma. In the present case, a deep crown-root fracture compromised the pulp and extended subgingivally on the palatal aspect. After using the fractured fragment as a provisional crown, the patient received conventional root canal treatment, which provided immediately satisfactory esthetic results and reliable short-term restoration of the crown-root fractured tooth. Rehabilitation of the

Multidisciplinary approach of a crown-root fracture using intentional replantation: a case report.

Crown-root fractures are complex traumatic injuries that require multidisciplinary management and afford uncertain prognosis. The purpose of this clinical article was to report the case of crown-root fracture where a multidisciplinary approach was successfully executed. A 10-year-old male patient who suffered a complicated crown-root fracture on a permanent maxillary central incisor was treated using an intentional 180°-rotation replantation technique, followed by endodontic therapy and restoration with resin composite. Two years after the initial treatment, the case was stable and the tooth w

Rehabilitation of a periodontally compromised case using the conical crown system. Part I.

The aim of this two-part treatment series is on the one hand to emphasize the difficulties and dilemmas a dentist is confronted with when planning complex cases, and on the other hand to reveal the rationale supporting the final treatment plan selection. Challenging cases are considered, including, among others, periodontal compromised rest dentitions requiring prosthodontic rehabilitation. For these patients the decision-making process deals with the indications and limitations of both the fields of fixed and removable prosthodontics. The first part of this study deals with the various prosth
