Ethnicity and difference in dengue virus-specific memory T cell responses in Cuban individuals.

The different risk factors associated with dengue hemorrhagic fever pathogenesis needs yet additional clarification. The exceptional epidemiological circumstances in Cuba allow their evaluation in a well-defined situation. In the present study the memory T cell response of 80 Cuban donors previously infected with dengue-1 and dengue-2 during the 1977 and 1981 epidemics, and belonging to different ethnic groups, was examined. White people showed, in contrast to black people, stronger and remarkably cross-reactive dengue virus-specific memory CD4(+) T lymphocyte proliferation and interferon-gamm…

Pros and cons of vaccination against serogroup B meningococcal disease.

A vaccine has recently been approved in the EU against meningococcal serogroup B, the main cause of meningococcal disease. There is a fierce debate about the decision regarding a universal vaccination in infants older than 2 months, as recommended by the majority of scientific societies. In western Europe the only country to have included the universal vaccination is the United Kingdom, with a lower incidence of the disease than Ireland. Other countries have also adopted it, such as the Czech Republic, Cuba and certain regions of Italy. Numerous cost-effectiveness studies have been published r…

Transmitted HIV type 1 drug resistance in newly diagnosed Cuban patients.

Knowledge of the associated mutations to transmitted drug resistance (TDR) in strains of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) constitutes a fundamental premise in epidemiological surveillance. In this present study, TDR from 200 Cuban patients who were diagnosed with HIV-1 between 2009 and 2011 was analyzed. By partial reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and sequencing of the HIV pol gene, an HIV subtype and transmitted resistance profile were determined. The prevalence of associated mutations to the TDR in the individuals studied was 21.5%. In the region of the rev…

Latina mothers' stances on stimulant medication: complexity, conflict, and compromise.

This study was undertaken to understand and describe Latina mothers' cognitions and attitudes toward the use of medication for their young children's behavior problems under the premise that these factors are determinants of noncompliance and inadequate adherence to medication treatments. Quantitative and qualitative data were extracted from a multimethod study of professional help seeking. Participants were 62 mothers from Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic. Findings indicated that mothers overwhelmingly preferred treatment options other than medication primarily because they under…

Lack of association between intussusception and oral polio vaccine in Cuban children.

Two exploratory investigations found an increased risk of intussusception after oral polio vaccine (OPV). A large, national, population-based study was undertaken in Cuba to investigate a possible association. Three hundred and thirty-five cases of intussusception in children under 2 years of age occurring in 1995-2000 were identified and their OPV records retrieved. The relative incidence (RI) of intussusception in defined periods up to 42 days after OPV in children under 1 year was estimated using the self-controlled case series method, controlling for age and season. The RI was not signific…

Intrathecal synthesis of immunoglobulins in Neisseria meningitidis and echovirus 6 meningoencephalitis.

Infectious diseases of the central nervous system (CNS) constitute the main cause of death amidst the neurological diseases in pediatric patients in Cuba. This factor, among others, made us study the immune response in children with such disorders. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum samples were collected from 69 patients: 26 with Neisseria meningitidis meningoencephalitis, and 43 with echovirus 6. IgA, IgM, IgG, and albumin were measured by immunodiffusion in serum and CSF. Local synthesis of immunoglobulins was calculated using Reiber's formula. The detection of intrathecal synthesis of IgG…

Retinopathy of prematurity in middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: In the 1940s and 1950s retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) was the single commonest cause of blindness in children in many industri … vere visual impairment or blindness due to ROP ranged from 0% in most African countries to 38.6% in Cuba. INTERPRETATION: These data suggest that ROP is becoming a major cause of potentially preventable blindness among children in middle-income countries that have introduced neonatal intensive-care services for preterm and low-birthweight babies.

Dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever in the Americas.

There has been a constant increase in the incidence of dengue in the Americas over the past 15 years. This has been caused by increased frequency of epidemic activity in most countries, as a result of increased numbers of virus serotypes circulating in the region. The change in disease ecology has resulted in the emergence of dengue hemorrhagic fever/dengue shock syndrome (DHF/DSS) in the region, first with a major epidemic in Cuba, followed by increased occurrence of sporadic cases of DHF/DSS in many countries. The sequence of events in the Americas in the 1980's has been nearly identical to …

[Diagnosis of acute abdomen by means of laparoscopy (experience in 6,400 cases)].

A study of 6,400 cases of Emergency Laparascopy (E.L.) was made in the Instituto de Gastroenterología de Habana, Cuba. The objective of the E.L. is to provide a diagnosis when other methods have been unable to do so. The most frequent diseases found were: gynecological problems, acute appendicities, and acute cholecystopathies. The E.L. is of great usefulness as in many cases an exact diagnosis is possible thus avoiding unnecessary surgery. The reliability of the method is good, permitting an exact diagnosis in 98% of the cases. In all the authors' cases the diagnosis was confirmed by either s…

Bacterial meningitis in children and adolescents: an observational study based on the national surveillance system.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial meningitis is a group of life threatening infections that mostly affect children and adolescents, and may be the cause of severe neurological sequelae. Cuba has implemented massive vaccination programmes against both Neisseria meningitidis (serogroup C in 1979 and B in 1987), and Haemophilus influenzae type b (1999), two of the main causal pathogens. We described and discussed some epidemiological aspects of the current status of bacterial meningitis to learn from the Cuban experience. METHODS: A nationwide observational study on children and adolescents from 1 to 18 yea…

Physical Therapy Treatment of a Person Exposed to Directed Energy: A Case Report.

Directed energy exposure is a phenomenon that has been reported in Cuba and China by both U.S. and Canadian government employees. Persons exposed to directed energy report symptoms that resemble mild traumatic brain injury (concussion). No single case has been reported in the literature. A 43-year-old male with suspected directed energy exposure developed progressively worsening headaches, dizziness, auditory/vestibular symptoms, balance problems, difficulty sleeping, and cognitive/emotional complaints while assigned by the Department of State to Guangzhou, China. His physical therapy care is …

Tropical pulmonary diseases.

The term 'tropical' refers to the region of the Earth lying between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. Located between these equatorial parallels demarcating the Torrid Zone are several underdeveloped and developing countries: Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, southern India, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Cuba, Ethiopia, Sudan and Nigeria, to name but a few considered to be 'tropical'. The climate in most of these countries is characterized by high temperatures and high humidity. The tropical climate and general state of socio-economic underdevelopment in such coun…
