Ultrasonography(US) of the scrotum has been demonstrated to be useful in the diagnosis of fluid in the scrotal sac. Grayscale US characterizes the lesions as testicular or extratesticular and, with color Doppler, power Doppler and pulse Doppler, any perfusion can also be assessed. Cystic or encapsulated fluid collections are relatively common benign lesions that usually present as palpable testicular lumps. Most cysts arise in the epidydimis, but all anatomical structures of the scrotum can be the site of their origin. US may suggest a specific diagnosis for a wide variety of intrascrotal cyst

The genus Echinococcus consists of parasites that have a life cycle with two mammalian hosts. Their larval stage, called the hydatid cyst, develops predominantly in the liver and lungs of intermediate hosts. The hydatid cyst is the causative agent of cystic hydatid disease and the species Echinococcus granulosus, G1 haplotype, is responsible for the vast majority of cases in humans, cattle and sheep. Protein characterization in hydatid cysts is essential for better understanding of the host-parasite relationship and the fertility process of Echinococcus. The aims of this work were the identifi

In autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), cyst inflation and continuous enlargement are associated with marked transepithelial ion and fluid secretion into the cyst lumen via cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR). Indeed, the inhibition or degradation of CFTR prevents the fluid accumulation within cysts. The in vivo mechanisms by which the lack of Polycystin-2 leads to CFTR stimulation are an outstanding challenge in ADPKD research and may bring important biomarkers for the disease. However, hampering their study, the available ADPKD in vitro cellular models

Pineal cysts are benign and often asymptomatic intracranial entities. Occasionally they can lead to neurological symptoms through growth or due to intracystic hemorrhage. The purpose of the current report is to describe their clinical characteristics and treatment options. In the current study, the authors illustrate the course of disease in 3 patients who developed neurological symptoms due to hemorrhage into a pineal cyst. Two of their patients had additional cerebral disease, and regular MR imaging examinations were conducted. This circumstance allowed documentation of growth and intracysti

The coexistence of fibrous dysplasia and aneurysmal bone cyst in the craniofacial region is extremely rare. This article presents a unique case involving the skull base, diagnosed using computed tomography and magnetic resonance. Imaging revealed a characteristic expansile mass with a ground-glass appearance alongside cystic areas exhibiting fluid-fluid levels, indicative of fibrous dysplasia and aneurysmal bone cyst. Surgical resection was performed successfully, although significant intraoperative hemorrhage was encountered, leading to hypovolemic shock and cardiorespiratory arrest. This cas

We report a case of a post-aspiration giant unilocular spermatocele in a young man. A 27-year-old man sought medical advice for a huge right scrotal swelling. The swelling first appeared following scrotal trauma and was aspirated. Shortly after, it reappeared and persisted for several years with a sense of heaviness, infrequent periods of right scrotal pain, and cosmetic concerns. Ultrasonography of the scrotum revealed a huge fluid cyst pushing the testis antero-inferiorly in the right hemi-scrotum. Scrotal exploration suggested the spermatocele nature of the cyst that emerged from the head o

Splenic cysts are uncommon, and cysts derived from the accessory spleen are rare. We report a case of a huge splenic cyst derived from the accessory spleen in the omentum, concomitant with multiple epithelial cysts of the primary spleen. Both serum and cystic fluid concentrations of carbohydrate antigen (CA)19-9 were markedly elevated. A huge monolocular cyst occupied the entire abdomen. A total of 71 of aspirated cystic fluid was turbid and yellowish-brown. The cyst wall, which consisted of CA19-9-positive squamous epithelium, contained approximately 2 x 3 x 1cm of splenic tissue. There was a

The case of a giant, nonparasitic splenic cyst, accidentally diagnosed in a young woman, is reported. The cyst was poorly-symptomatic, with only a discrete change of abdominal contour. The diagnosis was confirmed by USG and abdominal computed tomography scanning. The patient was operated on, and the cyst, containing 2.5 L of serosal fluid, was successfully excised, sparing almost the whole spleen. The postoperative course was uneventful, and histological examination showed the epidermoid character of the cyst.

We present the case of a 28-year-old competitive runner with iliotibial band (ITB) friction syndrome associated with a synovial cyst. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) did not demonstrate a fluid collection. However, open exploration revealed a large cyst beneath the ITB arising from the capsule of the knee proximal to the lateral meniscus. The cyst disappeared on extension. The pre-operative MRI scan may have revealed the cyst, if it had been taken with the knee flexed.

A case is described of primary hyperparathyroidism in a patient with both a parathyroid cyst within the thymus gland and a concomitant parathyroid adenoma. The parathyroid adenoma contained microcystic areas of degeneration, and it is thought that the parathyroid cyst reflected degenerative change in a pre-existing adenoma. Parathyroid cyst should be considered in the differential diagnosis of cystic lesions within the thymus. Fine needle aspiration and parathyroid hormone assay on cyst fluid may provide a preoperative diagnosis.

Keratocyst antigen was demonstrated in the fluid of keratinizing odontogenic cysts (primordial cysts) but not in fluids of other cyst types. The antigen was not present in plasma or saliva. It resisted collagenase digestion and did not react with keratin antibodies. In gel filtration, the antigen migrated as a single peak and gave a molecular weight of about 50 000 when analyzed in SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. In immunoelectrophoresis, it migrated in the prealbumin region and was localized in epithelial cells of the cyst capsule, when studied by a double-antibody fluorescence techni

INTRODUCTION: Symptoms induced by arachnoid cysts in the fallopian canal are uncommon, and facial nerve paralysis without cerebrospinal fluid otorrhea is comparatively rarer.
METHODS: Herein, we present two cases of arachnoid cysts in the fallopian canal with acute severe facial nerve paralysis and review the relevant literature.
RESULTS: The symptoms and imaging findings of these two cases resembled those of facial nerve schwannomas. Cerebrospinal fluid otorrhea occurred upon removal of the arachnoid cyst, and the facial nerve was observed to be separated into multiple filaments or compress

Arachnoid cysts are benign intra-arachnoid collections of cerebrospinal fluid and comprise around 1% of the intracranial masses. Unless complicated with hemorrhage, they are similar to cerebrospinal fluid in signal intensity in most cases. Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) reveals that they have no water restriction and distinguishes them from epidermoid cysts, which show water restriction. Arachnoid cysts of the craniospinal junction are rare lesions, with only seven cases reported in the literature. Imaging findings of all craniospinal arachnoid cysts reveal a large posteri

One hundred and ninety-six breast cyst fluid samples from 78 consecutive patients with multiple cysts were subdivided according to the K+/Na+ ratio: type 1 (K+/Na+ ratio > 1) and type 2 (K+/Na+ ratio < or = 1). Cysts of the same type were found in 57.7% of patients (concordant group). Such a finding suggests that in patients bearing multiple cysts, all aspirated fluids need to be classified on the basis of their cationic composition. In the concordant group, type 1 cysts were more frequent than in the discordant group (80.3% vs 59.5%, P = 0.002). High K+/Na+ ratios (> 4.0) were present in 64% …

OBJECTIVE: Large nonresolving neonatal ovarian cysts may be a risk factor for complications such as torsion, mass effect, rupture, intracystic hemorrhage, and autoamputation. Torsed cysts and autoamputated cysts can cause a diagnostic dilemma. The objective of our study was to correlate the imaging findings of intrauterine ovarian torsion and autoamputated ovaries with their pathologic findings.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the pre- and postnatal medical records, sonographic findings, operation notes, and pathologic reports of 15 patients with ovarian torsion. All patien

Specific antigens are detected in cyst fluid and cyst wall of Echinococcus granulosus, as well as germinal cells cultivated in vitro by sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and enzyme linked immunotransfer blot technique (ELIB), using the sera from mice infected with protoscoleces of E. granulosus for at least 10 months. A specific reaction band of 52 kDa or 38 kDa was detected in soluble protein of germinal cells and cyst fluid, respectively, but these two reaction bands were present concurrently in the cyst wall. The sera from 7 normal controls, 7 hydatidosis…

Opioid peptides have a variety of pathophysiologic actions, playing a novel important role in human breast cancer. The expression of beta-endorphin was studied in 84 human breast cyst fluids from gross cystic breast disease-affected patients. The concentration of beta-endorphin in pooled breast cyst fluids was over four-fold higher than in respective plasma with a significant increase in the mean value of the 'metabolically active' apocrine cysts when compared with flattened cysts (P < 0.001). The higher levels of Type I cyst suggest de novo mammary synthesis of endogenous opioid peptides and …

A cystic renal lesion is described in a girl with oral-facial-digital syndrome, type I. Excretory urography was normal at 1 yr of age; however, flank masses, hypertension, and renal failure were discovered at 11 yr of age. Bilateral nephrectomies were performed prior to renal transplantation. The renal cortex was replaced by large cysts. The cysts were lined by flattened nondescript epithelium and many contained glomerular tufts. Twenty renal cysts were aspirated, and the cyst fluid analyzed for sodium, potassium, creatinine, and osmolality. The concentration of solutes in the cyst fluid was c…

A 63-year-old female presented with an extremely rare solitary bone cyst in the spine involving the C-5 vertebral body. Computed tomography showed an air-density area inside the cyst, without postcontrast enhancement. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a low-intensity lesion on both T1- and T2-weighted images. At surgery, the cyst cavity contained no fluid. Histological examination of the surgical specimen revealed that the cyst wall was lined by a thin fibrous membrane. This rare bone cyst may have originated from a defect in the epiphyseal plate of the vertebral body.

The cyst stage of Echinococcus granulosus is commonly located in the liver, which frequently results in a long symptomless period. We present a sudden death due to a freshly hemorrhagic hydatid cyst following blunt trauma to the liver in a 19-year-old boy. The possible mechanism was thought to be an anaphylactoid reaction to the leakage of the cyst fluid.
