Caveolin-1 may participate in the pathogenesis of bladder pain syndrome/ interstitial cystitis.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether caveolin-1 expression is associated with bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis (BPS/IC) and to better understand the pathogenesis of BPS/IC. METHODS: The study population was composed of 19 women with BPS/IC and 7 healthy women as controls. Midstream urine specimens were collected before cystoscopy and cold cup bladder biopsies were obtained from the trigone of the bladder. Caveolin-1 protein expression was determined by indirect immunofluorescence and Western blot analysis in cases and controls, using a rabbit polyclonal antibody against caveolin-1. χ(2

Gating of sensory information differs in patients with interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome.

PURPOSE: Altered sensory processing in interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome cases may result from a deficiency of the central nervous system to adequately filter incoming visceral afferent information. We used prepulse inhibition as an operational measure of sensorimotor gating to examine early pre-attentive stages of information processing in females with interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome and healthy controls. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We assessed prepulse inhibition in 14 female patients with interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome and 17 healthy controls at 60 an

Long-term results of intravesical hyaluronan therapy in bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: While the short-term efficacy of intravesical hyaluronan for bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis (BPS/IC) has been demonstrated, no data exist on the long-term outcome of this therapy. METHODS: Seventy BPS/IC patients treated with intravesical hyaluronan therapy from 2001 to 2003 were asked to rate their present status of bladder symptoms on a visual analog scale. RESULTS: Forty-eight of 70 patients responded after a mean follow-up of 4.9 years. The average initial VAS score of 8.15 had been reduced to 2.71 after therapy and further to 2.14 5 years later.

Interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome: what do patients mean by "perceived" bladder pain?

OBJECTIVES: To report the reasons patients with interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome (IC/PBS) give for the perception that the bladder is the source of their pain. The perception that the bladder is the source of pain is a necessary criterion for many definitions of IC/PBS. METHODS: Events Preceding Interstitial Cystitis was a case-control study seeking risk factors for IC/PBS. The inclusion criteria for incident cases included "lower abdominal pain" or "bladder pain" and ≥2 of the following symptoms: urinary frequency, urgency, and/or nocturia. The patients were systematically foll

[Somatic comorbidities in irritable bowel syndrome: fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and interstitial cystitis].

Fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and interstitial cystitis frequently overlap with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). There is a positive correlation between the incidence of these comorbidities and increased health care seeking, reduction in quality of life, and higher levels of mood disorders, which raises the question of a common underlying pathophysiology. A possible central hypersensitization disorder seems to be particularly involved in the dysfunction of bidirectional neural pathways and viscerovisceral cross-interactions within the CNS, thus explaining these many extraintestinal ma

Antecedent nonbladder syndromes in case-control study of interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Probing for clues to the pathogenesis of interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome (IC/PBS), we sought antecedent nonbladder syndromes that distinguished incident IC/PBS cases from matched controls. METHODS: Female incident IC/PBS cases were recruited nationally, and their IC/PBS onset date (index date) was established. The controls were recruited by national random digit dialing and matched to the cases by sex, age, region, and interval between the (assigned) index date and interview. The prevalence of 24 nonbladder syndromes before the index date was assessed, 7 by multiple

Urinary tract infection and inflammation at onset of interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome (IC/PBS) is a chronic disease primarily in women that is of low incidence and unknown etiology and manifests as bladder pain and urinary symptoms. Acute urinary tract infection (UTI) is of high incidence in women, presents as dysuria and urinary symptoms, and is caused by uropathogenic bacteria. We hypothesized that UTI is present at the onset of IC/PBS in some women. METHODS: For a case-control study seeking risk factors for IC/PBS, women with IC/PBS symptoms of 12 months or less were recruited and evaluated by interview and medical

Interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome: symptom recognition is key to early identification, treatment.

Once thought to be rare, interstitial cystitis (IC) is now believed to have a markedly higher prevalence. This potentially devastating disease is also known as painful bladder syndrome (PBS) and can significantly impact quality of life. It is diagnosed by its symptoms, as there are no proven pathological findings. Unfortunately, the symptoms of IC/PBS overlap those of other common disease states such as overactive bladder, endometriosis, urinary tract infection, and prostatitis, which complicates the differential diagnosis. Understanding the presenting symptoms of urinary frequency, urinary ur

Molecular marker for development of interstitial cystitis in rat model: isoactin gene expression.

PURPOSE: To determine whether the differential expression of bladder smooth muscle isoactin can be used as a molecular marker for the development of interstitial cystitis (IC). METHODS: Three groups of five female Sprague-Dawley rats each underwent urethral catheterization and intravesical instillation of 0.5 ml. of 0.4N HCl. One group was sacrificed one, two and four weeks after the application of HCl, and their bladders harvested for histologic examination and evaluation using Northern blot analysis of bladder smooth muscle isoactins. Five control animals were sacrificed and their bladders

Enhanced CHI3L1 promotes macrophage activation in persistent inflammatory events of ulcerative interstitial cystitis.

BACKGROUND: Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS), particularly the Hunner-type subtype (HIC), is a chronic inflammatory bladder disorder characterized by persistent inflammation and macrophage-driven immunometabolic dysregulation. CHI3L1, a secreted glycoprotein implicated in inflammation and tissue remodeling, is significantly upregulated in HIC and correlates with disease severity, but its mechanistic role in macrophage-mediated persistent inflammatory events (PIEs) remains poorly defined. METHODS: This study integrated multi-omics analyses, including bioinformatics of IC/BP

Treatment of interstitial cystitis with intravesical instillation of recombinant human collagen type Ⅲ.

BACKGROUND: Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a chronic condition characterized by frequent urination, urgency, and pelvic pain. While its pathogenesis remains incompletely understood, the prevailing epithelial theory suggests that a defective glycosaminoglycan (GAG) layer increases bladder permeability, allowing urinary toxins to chronically stimulate the detrusor muscle and activate mast cells. Current therapies, such as intravesical hyaluronic acid instillation, have demonstrated limited efficacy. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of sterile recombinant human collagen type III (rHCII

Association of Bladder Pain Syndrome/Interstitial Cystitis with Hyperlipidemia: A Case‒Control Study.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Metabolic factors have been proposed to be related to the bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis (BPS/IC) pathogenesis. Herein, we investigated the association between metabolic factors, especially blood lipids, and BPS/IC. METHODS: The present study adopted a case‒control design, comparing several metabolic indicators in 106 women with BPS/IC versus 164 women without BPS/IC, all of whom were diagnosed at the Hospital between January 2013 and December 2022. The case-control odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for metabolic indicators were estimat
