Dandy-Walker malformation in an infant with tetrasomy 9p.

An infant with Dandy-Walker malformation and prenatally diagnosed tetrasomy 9p is reported. Chromosomal analysis of primary amniocyte culture revealed true mosaicism for two cell lines: 50% of the cells had an isochromosome 9p (pter-q13::q13-pter), and the other 50% showed a normal female karyotype (46,XX). After birth the same chromosomal abnormality was found in 75% of peripheral blood lymphocytes. Phenotypic features included intrauterine growth retardation, hypotrophy of the left side of the body with left microphthalmus, and progressive hydrocephalus secondary to Dandy-Walker malformation

Dandy-Walker malformation: prenatal diagnosis and prognosis.

INTRODUCTION: The difficulty in prognosticating the clinical and intellectual outcome of fetuses presenting with a Dandy-Walker malformation (DWM) comes from the great variety of cystic, median, and retrocerebellar malformations that probably have nothing in common and the variability of the definitions given to these lesions. In addition, many of these lesions can mimic each other. A correct diagnosis cannot be made without a good quality MRI including sagittal views of the vermis and T2-weighted images. We limited the diagnosis of DWM to those malformations with all of the following features

Isolated Dandy-Walker malformation: prenatal diagnosis in two consecutive pregnancies.

We report a family with recurrent Dandy-Walker malformation (DWM). The first offspring was found prenatally to have isolated DWM at 30 weeks' gestation. Ultrasonography at 19 weeks' gestation in the subsequent pregnancy revealed isolated DWM in both dizygotic twins. Chromosome analysis was normal in all three infants, and autopsy confirmed that no other congenital abnormalities were present. Evidence suggests that rare families transmit the disorder in an autosomal or X-linked recessive pattern, with a high recurrence risk.

Neurocutaneous melanosis with the Dandy-Walker malformation: a possible rare pathoetiologic association.

We report a neonate in whom clinical and radiologic studies revealed features of both neurocutaneous melanosis and a Dandy-Walker malformation. We suggest that the association of these two conditions is perhaps not chance.

Complete trisomy 9: case report with ultrasound findings.

In a case of complete trisomy 9, ultrasound findings led to prenatal diagnosis. This case is reviewed in the context of previous case reports. A 29-year-old gravida III, para II was referred at 34 weeks because of abnormal ultrasound findings. The findings included intrauterine growth retardation, Dandy-Walker malformation, a single atrium, liver calcifications, a two-vessel cord, and abnormal Doppler studies. Percutaneous umbilical blood sampling revealed complete trisomy 9. Prenatal diagnosis led to a plan of no intervention for fetal indications. Autopsy revealed facial, cardiovascular, cen

Uniparental disomy and prenatal phenotype: Two case reports and review.

RATIONALE: Uniparental disomy (UPD) gives a description of the inheritance of both homologues of a chromosome pair from the same parent. The consequences of UPD depend on the specific chromosome/segment involved and its parental origin. PATIENT CONCERNS: We report prenatal phenotypes of 2 rare cases of UPD. DIAGNOSES: The prenatal phenotype of case 1 included sonographic markers such as enlarged nuchal translucency (NT), absent nasal bone, short femur and humerus length, and several structural malformations involving Dandy-Walker malformation and congenital heart defects. The prenatal phenot

[A case of arima syndrome (cerebro-oculo-hepato-renal syndrome) in long-term survival with hemodialysis].

We report a long-term survival case of Arima syndrome requiring hemodialysis. The patient, now 25 years of age, was hypotonic at birth. She was diagnosed with Dandy-Walker syndrome at an early month of age when she underwent posterior cranial fossa cystectomy and vermian agenesis was confirmed. With some delay in psychomotor development, she showed the development of language comprehension and meaningful speech and started to walk without aid at the age of 7 years. Polycystic kidneys were found at 11 years, and Arima syndrome was diagnosed at 16 years when she presented herself to our hospital

Case Report: 5 Cases of Variant Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome Diagnosed on Prenatal Fetal Ultrasound.

BACKGROUND Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is a complex left-sided obstructive congenital cardiac condition with several variants. This report is of 5 cases with varying morphology of HLHS diagnosed by fetal prenatal ultrasound at the 4-chamber view (4CV) level. CASE REPORT Five cases were referred by obstetrics and gynecology specialists with preliminary information on visible congenital abnormalities in the third trimester. Fetal echocardiography showed that several morphological variants of HLHS were found. The patient in the first case had the most frequently found variant; this var

Associated anomalies in cases with agenesis of the corpus callosum.

Agenesis of corpus callosum (ACC) is an uncommon congenital anomaly, its etiology is unclear and its pathogenesis is controversial. Cases with ACC often have other non-ACC associated congenital anomalies. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence and the types of these associated anomalies in a defined population. The associated anomalies in cases with ACC were collected in all live births, stillbirths, and terminations of pregnancy during 29 years in 387,067 consecutive births in the area covered by our population-based registry of congenital malformations. Of the 99 cases with A

Two females with mutations in USP9X highlight the variable expressivity of the intellectual disability syndrome.

The genetic causes of intellectual disability (ID) are heterogeneous and include both chromosomal and monogenic etiologies. The X-chromosome is known to contain many ID-related genes and males show a marked predominance for intellectual disability. Here we report two females with syndromic intellectual disability. The first individual was relatively mild in her presentation with mild-moderate intellectual disability, hydronephrosis and altered pigmentation along the lines of Blaschko without additional congenital anomalies. A second female presented shortly after birth with dysmorphic facial f

Blake's Pouch Cysts and Differential Diagnoses in Prenatal and Postnatal MRI : A Pictorial Review.

PURPOSE: The clinical variability of Blake's pouch cysts (BPC) may range from asymptomatic via ataxia to sequelae of decompensated hydrocephalus. On the other hand, Dandy-Walker malformation (DWM) and cerebellar vermis hypoplasia generally correlate with less favorable neurologic development. The aim was to illustrate the potential of prenatal and postnatal neuroimaging to distinguish a BPC or persistent BP from other posterior fossa malformations. METHODS: This pictorial review addresses the inconsistent nomenclature, clinical features, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) patterns of BPC an

Systematic review and meta-analysis of isolated posterior fossa malformations on prenatal ultrasound imaging (part 1): nomenclature, diagnostic accuracy and associated anomalies.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the outcome in fetuses with prenatal diagnosis of posterior fossa anomalies apparently isolated on ultrasound imaging. METHODS: MEDLINE and EMBASE were searched electronically utilizing combinations of relevant medical subject headings for 'posterior fossa' and 'outcome'. The posterior fossa anomalies analyzed were Dandy-Walker malformation (DWM), mega cisterna magna (MCM), Blake's pouch cyst (BPC) and vermian hypoplasia (VH). The outcomes observed were rate of chromosomal abnormalities, additional anomalies detected at prenatal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), addition

Normal and abnormal anatomy of the cerebellar vermis in midgestational human fetuses.

BACKGROUND: Evaluation of the cerebellar vermis is an important component of fetal autopsy, but lack of an established approach, inadequate normal anatomic data, and the subtle nature of some cerebellar malformations negatively affect concordance between prenatal ultrasound and autopsy diagnoses. METHODS: Gross anatomy and sagittal histologic sections of vermis from 26 midgestation fetuses with no posterior fossa anomalies detected by prenatal ultrasound or autopsy were examined to establish stage-specific norms. These were compared to data from three fetuses with prenatal ultrasound diagnose

Dandy-Walker complex in a boy with a 5 Mb deletion of region 1q44 due to a paternal t(1;20)(q44;q13.33).

A 10-year-old boy with vermis hypoplasia, dilatation of the fourth ventricle, enlarged cisterna magna and aplasia of the corpus callosum, consistent with the Dandy-Walker complex (DWC), and slight facial dysmorphisms, severe motor and mental retardation is presented. By combining data obtained by karyotyping, array-CGH, FISH, and multiplex ligation-mediated probe amplification (MLPA) we identified a 5 Mb deletion of the 1q44 --> qter region resulting from a paternal t(1;20)(q44;q13.33). This smallest 1q44 deletion reported so far, enabled us to significantly narrow down the number of candidate

CSF hydrothorax--VP shunt complication without displacement of a peritoneal catheter.

Cerebrospinal fluid hydrothorax is reported as a rare complication of ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt. A 16-month-old boy known to have congenital hydrocephalus and a Dandy-Walker cyst presented with serious respiratory distress. Examination revealed right pleural effusion and congested throat. Thoracocentesis with drainage of the pleural cavity for 10 days failed to free the patient from pleural effusion. Following an intraperitoneal injection of Omnipaque a chest X-ray was done, and samples of pleural fluid taken before and after the injection were compared on X-ray, revealing the presence o

Neurodevelopmental outcome after antenatal diagnosis of posterior fossa abnormalities.

Posterior fossa abnormalities are sonographically diagnosable in the fetus. Anomalies of this region include Dandy-Walker malformation, enlarged cisterna magna, and arachnoid cyst. Despite prenatal diagnosis, the uncertainties related to natural history and neurodevelopmental outcome in survivors make patient counseling difficult. The purposes of this study were to determine the accuracy of prenatal diagnosis of these lesions and elucidate long-term neurodevelopmental outcome in survivors in prenatally diagnosed posterior fossa abnormalities. Fifteen cases of posterior fossa abnormalities were
