Serosurvey for antibodies against Brucella abortus and Leptospira interrogans in pampas deer from Brazil.

A survey for antibodies against Brucella abortus, and Leptospira interrogans was conducted on 17 pampas deer (Ozotocerus bezoarticus) from Pantanal Matogrossense (State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil) and on 24 pampas deer from Parque Nacional de Emas (State of Goiás, Brazil). Antibodies against B. abortus were detected by plate agglutination, rose Bengal, and complement fixation tests; antibodies against Leptospira interrogans were detected by the microscopic agglutination test. All sera were negative for B. abortus antibodies and all deer sera from Parque Nacional de Emas were negative for L.…

Serologic evidence of Jamestown Canyon virus infection in white-tailed deer populations from Connecticut.

We determined the prevalence and distribution of Jamestown Canyon (JC) virus antibody in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) populations in Connecticut, USA. Sera were collected from hunter-killed deer during 1993. Antibody to JC virus was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in 92 (21%) of 446 deer sera, and was uniformly distributed among geographic sites. Twenty-one ELISA-positive sera were tested and confirmed positive by plaque reduction neutralization testing. This represents the first serologic evidence of JC virus in a reservoir host population from the northeas…

Light and electron microscope study of Sarcocystis sp. from the fallow deer (Cervus dama).

By means of light and electron microscopy a study was made of Sarcocystis sp. from 11 fallow deer (Cervus dama). Cysts of Sarcocystis sp. were found in the tongue and abdominal muscle of 3 of 11 deer from forests near Bonn (FRG). These measured 212-560 micron in length and 54-120 micron in width and contained metrocytes and merozoites. The cyst wall, which had narrow band-like protrusions, is compared with other Sarcocystis sp. from Cervidae.

Techniques for evaluating humoral and cell-mediated immunity in mule deer fawns (Odocoileus hemionus).

Twenty mule deer fawns (Odocoileus hemionus) were removed from their dams 48 h after birth, and hand-reared. Methods for monitoring their immune capability are described. Passive humoral immunity was determined by serum protein electrophoresis. Active humoral immunity following Clostridium toxoid vaccination was determined by immunodiffusion. Cell-mediated immunity was assayed using contact sensitization to 1-nitro, 2,4-dichlorobenzene (DNCB).

Experimentally induced Faciola hepatica infection in white-tailed deer. I. Clinicopathological and parasitological features.

Six white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and six sheep were inoculated with metacercariae of Fasciola hepatica. Two animals of each species were given 100, 500 or 2500 metacercariae. Clinicopathological features of these infections were determined by analyses of blood samples collected each week from inoculated deer and sheep as well as from two noninoculated animals of each species. One animal in each inoculated group was killed and examined at six weeks postinoculation and the remainder at 15 weeks postinoculation. Compared with the values obtained from noninoculated controls, eosinoph…

Genome-Wide Identification of Candidate Genes Associated with Antler Weight in Tahe Red Deer.

The Tahe red deer is derived from the wild Tarim red deer, an endemic subspecies native to the Tarim Basin in Xinjiang, China. It has recently received official approval as a locally bred deer variety, developed through artificial breeding programs. This breed retains several advantageous traits from its wild ancestors, including tolerance to coarse forage, drought resistance, and a high yield of velvet antlers. To investigate the genetic mechanisms underlying velvet antler production, phenotypic data for antler weight and blood samples were collected from 73 adult Tahe red deer. Whole-genome …

Molecular and Phylogenetic Characterization of Onchocerca flexuosa in Red Deer from South-Eastern Europe.

Onchocerca flexuosa is a vector-borne filarial nematode infecting red deer (Cervus elaphus) throughout Europe. Despite numerous reports from Central, Northern, and Southern Europe, its occurrence in South-Eastern Europe has remained largely undocumented. This study provides the first molecularly confirmed report and the first systematic epidemiological assessment of O. flexuosa in red deer in Croatia. During the 2024-2025 hunting season, 110 legally harvested red deer from central Croatia were examined for subcutaneous nodules. Nodules were evaluated morphologically, and adult nematodes were i…

A novel liposomal hydrogel loaded with deer blood peptides prevents UVB-induced skin photoaging.

Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation is a major global contributor to skin damage. To identify novel protective agents, this study evaluated the photoprotective effects of deer blood peptides (DBP) and developed a DBP-based delivery system to prevent UV-induced skin photoaging. DBP was extracted from deer blood via enzyme hydrolysis. In vitro cytotoxicity and cell apoptosis assays confirmed the safety of DBP, while radical scavenging assays and measurements of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) demonstrated its strong antioxidant capacity. Owing to its nutrient-rich composition, potent antiox…

A high-quality Chromosome-level reference genome assembly of white-lipped deer (Przewalskium albirostris).

White-lipped deer (Przewalskium albirostris) is the sole species in the genus Przewalskium of the Cervidae family. And it is exclusively found in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, where it has evolved as a specialized deer on account of the extreme climates and geographical conditions. However, limited research on the genome of this species exists. Here, PacBio and Hi-C sequencing data were constructed to a high-quality Chromosome-level reference genome for the white-lipped deer. The assembly, totaling 2.99 GB, is composed of 34 chromosomes (32 autosomes and X, Y chromosomes), with a scaffold N50 len…

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in New York State.

The parasitic protozoa, Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii), is a model organism for one health because of its wide-ranging impacts on humans, wildlife, and domestic animals. Intermediate hosts, including white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), have been implicated in its maintenance. Prior analysis of Toxoplasma gondii seroprevalence in New York State deer focused on rural areas; however, the high density of domestic cats (Felis catus) in urban areas has been implicated in its spread amongst deer. To address this, the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii was assessed across two suburban and urba…

Longitudinal detection of prion shedding in nasal secretions of CWD-infected white-tailed deer.

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is an emergent prion disease spreading in cervid populations in North America, South Korea and Scandinavia. Rapid detection of CWD prions shed by live animals using minimally invasive methods remains an important need. Previous studies in deer, elk and hamsters have demonstrated prion replication in the nasal olfactory mucosa, yet the temporal profile of CWD prion shedding in nasal secretions has not been well characterized. Here we report nasal prion shedding in 18 deer orally exposed to low doses of CWD prions and monitored longitudinally by several parameters. …

Parasite-mediated manipulation? Toxoplasma gondii infection increases risk behaviour towards culling in red deer.

Parasites can modify host behaviour to increase their chances of survival and transmission. Toxoplasma gondii is a globally distributed protozoan whose ability to modify host behaviour is well known in taxa such as rats and humans. Less well known are the effects on the behaviour of wild species, with the exception of a few studies on primates and carnivores. Taking advantage of a culling activity conducted in Stelvio National Park (Italy), the serological status of T. gondii was studied in 260 individuals of red deer Cervus elaphus with respect to the risk of being culled. A temporal culling …

Genotype by environment interactions for chronic wasting disease in farmed US white-tailed deer.

Despite implementation of enhanced management practices, chronic wasting disease in US white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) continues to expand geographically. Herein, we perform the largest genome-wide association analysis to date for chronic wasting disease (n = 412 chronic wasting disease-positive; n = 758 chronic wasting disease-nondetect) using a custom Affymetrix Axiom single-nucleotide polymorphism array (n = 121,010 single-nucleotide polymorphisms), and confirm that differential susceptibility to chronic wasting disease is a highly heritable (h2= 0.611 ± 0.056) polygenic trait in…

Red and fallow deer determine the density of Ixodes ricinus nymphs containing Anaplasma phagocytophilum.

BACKGROUND: The density of Ixodes ricinus nymphs infected with Anaplasma phagocytophilum is one of the parameters that determines the risk for humans and domesticated animals to contract anaplasmosis. For this, I. ricinus larvae need to take a bloodmeal from free-ranging ungulates, which are competent hosts for A. phagocytophilum. METHODS: Here, we compared the contribution of four free-ranging ungulate species, red deer (Cervus elaphus), fallow deer (Dama dama), roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), and wild boar (Sus scrofa), to A. phagocytophilum infections in nymphs. We used a combination of ca…
