Dilated odontoma: A report of two cases from a radiological perspective.

Dilated odontoma is the most extreme form of dens invaginatus. The lesion appears as a roughly spherical mass that does not resemble a tooth but in a way appears tooth - like on radiographs due to somewhat similar radiodensity. The lesion is mostly spherical in appearance and hence the term "dilated." Occasionally, we come across cases of simultaneous pathologies. Here, we report two cases of a dilated odontoma one of which is associated with dentigerous cyst and in other case dilated odontoma pushing the maxillary sinus superiorly. Histologically, the mass was composed of dentinal tubules. Th…

A case of supernumerary teeth in the premaxilla, maxillary cuspid, and mandibular premolar regions.

A case of several developing supernumerary teeth is reported. A seven-year-old African-American boy presented with retained primary maxillary central incisors, two impacted mesiodens, and unerupted permanent maxillary central incisors. A dentigerous cyst was removed at the time of surgical removal of the mesiodens. Approximately fourteen months post-extraction, a new panoramic radiograph showed the presence of six previously unidentified developing and unerupted supernumerary teeth, one on each of the maxillary cuspid areas and two on the mandibular premolar regions bilaterally. Practitioners …

Eruption cysts: A series of 66 cases with clinical features.

BACKGROUND: The systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) and lymph node ratio (LNR) have both been associated with survival in gastric and gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) adenocarcinoma, but their combined prognostic value is unclear in patients treated with perioperative fluorouracil, leucovorin, oxaliplatin, and docetaxel (FLOT). We developed a combined SII-LNR risk score and assessed its association with overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). METHODS: This retrospective single-center cohort included 153 patients with resectable gastric or GEJ adenocarcinoma treated with per

The unerupted or impacted third molar--a critical appraisal of its pathologic potential.

The prophylactic removal of asymptomatic unerupted or impacted third molars constitutes a major proportion of all oral surgical procedures. Patients are advised to have this preventive surgery on the basis that such teeth, if retained, are likely to cause certain pathologic lesions. The evidence in the scientific literature on the prevalence of dentigerous cysts, mural ameloblastoma, epidermoid carcinoma and root resorption indicates that this concern is exaggerated. The retrospective data on the reasons for extractions of third molars confirm this conclusion. Until there are prospective studi…

Expression of podoplanin and TGF-beta in glandular odontogenic cyst and its comparison with developmental and inflammatory odontogenic cystic lesions.

BACKGROUND: The number of studies investigating the immunohistochemical characteristics of glandular odontogenic cysts (GOCs) is limited, due to its rarity. TGF-beta has been suggested to induce podoplanin expression in some lesions. We aimed to evaluate and compare podoplanin and TGF-beta expression in GOC and other odontogenic cystic lesions. METHODS: A total of 43 samples including five GOCs, 10 dentigerous cysts (DCs), eight unicystic ameloblastoma (UAs), and 20 radicular cysts (RCs) were selected and subjected to immunohistochemical staining using monoclonal antibodies against podoplanin…

Lipopigment in odontogenic cysts.

A study of 105 odontogenic cysts revealed the presence of pigmented cells in the cyst wall in 38% of the cases. The frequency of pigmented cells was higher in the inflammatory odontogenic cysts than in the development cysts. Although isolated pigmented cells were seen within the epithelial lining and cyst cavity, the larger collections were closely associated with cholesterol crystals and hemosiderin deposits; they contained light brown cytoplasmic pigment which manifested sudanophilia, acid-fastness, silver reduction capacity, PAS positivity and yellow autofluorescence in ultraviolet light. OBJECTIVES: To assess changes and factors influencing in buccolingual width and cyst cavity depth at the stoma site during marsupialization with cyst plug decompression for jaw cystic lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were collected from patients who underwent marsupialization and cyst plug decompression for mandibular cystic lesions. A total of 15 cases were analyzed, including 10 odontogenic keratocysts (OKC), 1 unicystic ameloblastoma (UA), and 4 dentigerous cysts (DC). Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans were conducted pre-surgery (T0), three months post-surgery (T1) and at the …

[Odontogenic and nonodontogenic jaw cysts: experience in 25 cases].

OBJECTIVES: We retrospectively evaluated the patients with jaw cysts treated at our center. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 25 patients (14 males, 11 females; mean age 33+/-19 years; range 7 to 69 years) who underwent surgery for odontogenic or nonodontogenic jaw cysts. RESULTS: The most common presentation was a swelling in the jaw with or without dental problems. Involvement was in the mandible in 18 patients, and in the maxilla in seven patients. The lesions consisted of eight radicular, six dentigerous, two nasoalveolar, two globulomaxillary cysts, and three keratocysts. Four pa

Volumetric analysis of keratocystic odontogenic tumors and non-neoplastic jaw cysts - Comparison and its clinical relevance.

The keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KCOT) is capable of causing vast osseous destruction. Histopathological examination is pivotal for diagnosis. The diagnostic process can sometimes be hindered by tissue inflammation of KCOTs with loss of defining criteria, resulting in misdiagnosis as an odontogenic jaw cyst. We discuss the possible merits of volumetric analysis when facing this particular diagnostic dilemma and for pathophysiological characterization of KCOTs. We included 114 patients, of whom 27 were histopathologically diagnosed with a KCOT and 87 with dentigerous (n = 41) and periapical

Decompression as a treatment for odontogenic cystic lesions of the jaw.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effectiveness of decompression as the primary treatment of odontogenic cystic lesions of the jaw involving factors that affect relative shrinking speed and bone regeneration. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 32 patients with odontogenic cystic lesions of the jaw underwent decompression with customized thermoplastic resin stents. Clinical examinations and pre- and postdecompression panoramic radiographs were analyzed. RESULTS: The mean relative speed of shrinkage of radicular cysts (RCs; 3.37 cm(2)/month) was faster than those of keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KCOTs

Scanning electron microscopy of odontogenic cyst epithelium.

The epithelial lining of 8 odontogenic keratocysts (OKC), 9 radicular (RC) and 3 dentigerous cysts (DC) were examined in SEM in order to study the ultrastructural surface topography of the lumenal surface cells. The orthokeratinized OKC showed a reticular network of intercommunicating microridges surrounding micropits giving a honeycombed appearance to the entire surface. The deep surface of these cells was covered by a complementary array of short stubby microvilli. This pattern was identical to that described for oral epithelium in areas of masticatory mucosa. The parakeratinized OKC showed …
