Intranasal versus sublingual sedation in pediatric dentistry: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Effective and well-tolerated sedation is critical for managing anxiety and uncooperative behaviors in pediatric dental patients. The intranasal and sublingual routes offer needle-free alternatives to oral or intravenous sedation; however, their comparative performance in dental settings remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: To systematically compare the efficacy, onset time, and child cooperation outcomes of intranasal and sublingual sedative agents in pediatric dental patients. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. The databases searched in

Functional MgAl LDH@SiO2 Composites: Controlled Fluoride Delivery in Dentistry.

Bio-silica particles derived from rice husks were coated with MgAl layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and thermally converted into layered double oxides (LDOs) to evaluate fluoride capture and release capability. The deposition of an MgAl LDH layer on the silica particle makes the LDH more accessible for interaction. Fluoride loading was tested in aqueous and ethanol-water media, with mixed solvents consistently enhancing uptake. Release studies in demineralized water showed relatively rapid desorption (~1500 min), whereas embedding particles in an acrylic matrix reduced the release rate by near

Biomimetic Restorative Dentistry: an evidence-based discussion of common myths.

This narrative review critically examines some protocols of biomimetic restorative dentistry (BRD), which supposedly outperforms traditional adhesive techniques. This review explores the origins of BRD, introduces cognitive biases influencing the adoption of BRD protocols without evidence scrutiny, and discusses nine BRD protocols. For this, we searched randomized clinical trials and systematic reviews in the literature on the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library CENTRAL databases, which lead to the following conclusions about the revised protocols: 1) The use of dyes excessively removes cario…

Restorative dentistry clinical decision-making for hypodontia: retained primary molars.

Primary molar teeth that are retained beyond their exfoliation pose a clinical decision-making challenge for dental teams. The retention of these teeth may be due to absence of a permanent successor. As a result, careful planning is required to determine if retention or extraction is necessary. This article aims to discuss the prevalence of retained primary molars, assessment and treatment planning considerations, from both orthodontic and restorative perspectives.

Stanley L Drummond-Jackson. Pioneer of intravenous anaesthesia in dentistry.

Stanley Lithgow Drummond-Jackson was born in Northumberland and qualified from Edinburgh University Dental School in 1931. Even in the early stages of his practice he devoted his energies to the problem of pain control in dentistry, publishing his first paper in 1935. In the early 20th century most dental anaesthetics were inhalational with nitrous oxide, ether, ethyl chloride and chloroform. The introduction of intravenous hexobarbitone in 1931 led to bold and enthusiastic researchers like Drummond-Jackson to pioneer its use in dental practice. He published his major work on intravenous hexob…

Domestic violence: a complex health care issue for dentistry today.

As a natural outgrowth of the dental professional's role in recognizing and reporting child abuse the topic has been broadened in recent years to domestic violence, that is child, spouse/intimate partner, disabled and elder abuse. Forty years ago in the US there were 662 cases of child abuse reported to authorities. Today that reported number is in excess of 3 million per year [D. Wiese, D. Daro, Current trends in reporting and fatalities; the results of the 1994 annual 50 state survey, National Committee to Prevent Child Abuse, Working Paper 808, 1995]. Clindamycin in dentistry: more than just effective prophylaxis for endocarditis?

Clindamycin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic with activity against aerobic, anaerobic, and beta-lactamase-producing pathogens. This antibiotic has been used for many years as prophylactic treatment during dental procedures to prevent endocarditis. However, the spectrum and susceptibility of the bacteria species involved in dental infections indicate that clindamycin would also be an effective treatment option for these conditions. In addition to its antiinfective properties, clindamycin has high oral absorption, significant tissue penetration, including penetration into bone, and stimulatory eff

Feline odontoclastic resorptive lesions an unsolved enigma in veterinary dentistry.

This article presents a comprehensive review of the literature on feline odontoclastic resorptive lesions (FORLs), including etiopathogenesis, prevalence and predisposition, classification, histopathologic appearance, diagnosis, and treatment. Approximately one-third of all domestic cats may develop FORLs during their life span, and the risk of developing FORLs increases with age. Sophisticated dental treatments promise neither cure nor permanent improvement of affected teeth. Extraction is the current treatment of choice. Research on the etiology of FORLs has not been rewarding in recent year

Adolescent dentistry: multidisciplinary treatment for the cleft lip/palate patient.

Congenital labiomaxillary clefts result from the absence or incomplete fusion of the maxillary and medial nasal processes with resultant hard and soft tissue defects. Comprehensive treatment of these defects requires the collaborative efforts of surgeons, orthodontists, restorative clinicians, and laboratory technicians. Precise periodontal and orthodontic treatments must be carefully coordinated with the restorative plan to ensure sufficient space and tissue architecture for the definitive restorations. This article describes the multidisciplinary treatment of a cleft lip/palate patient using
