Nicotine dependence and major depression. New evidence from a prospective investigation.

We examined prospectively the association between nicotine dependence and major depression (MDD). The following questions were addressed: (1) Are smokers with a history of MDD at increased risk for progression to nicotine dependence and more severe levels of dependence? (2) Are persons with a history of nicotine dependence at increased risk for MDD? A sample of 995 young adults were interviewed in 1989 and reinterviewed in 1990, 14 months later. The revised National Institute of Mental Health-Diagnostic Interview Schedule was used to ascertain DSM-III-R nicotine dependence and other substance

Abuse or dependence on cannabis and other psychiatric disorders. Madrid study on dual pathology prevalence.

OBJECTIVES: Cannabis use has been associated to a wide variety of mental disorders, the possible causal role of this use in the etiology of severe mental disorders as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder standing out. Moreover, the cannabinoid system is involved in emotional regulation, so cannabis use could disturb this process and provoke anxiety and mood disorders. The main objective of this study was to analyze the cannabis addict subgroup from Madrid study of prevalence of dual disorders in community mental health and substance misuse services. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The sample consisted of

Severity of childhood maltreatment predicts reaction times and heart rate variability during an emotional working memory task in borderline personality disorder.

UNLABELLED: Background: Difficulties in emotion regulation are a core symptom of borderline personality disorder (BPD) and often interfere with cognitive functions, such as working memory (WM). Traumatic childhood experiences, including severe maltreatment, can contribute to emotion dysregulation, possibly mediated by changes in high-frequency heart rate variability (HF-HRV). However, it is not yet entirely understood if HF-HRV alterations underlie impaired WM during emotional distraction in BPD and if this is related to traumatic childhood experiences and to comorbid post-traumatic stress dis

Enduring Effects of One-Day Training in Good Psychiatric Management on Clinician Attitudes About Borderline Personality Disorder.

Time-limited interventions may attenuate stigma and negative beliefs about borderline personality disorder (BPD) among mental health clinicians. This study examined whether a 1-day training in good psychiatric management (GPM) changed clinician attitudes and beliefs and whether those changes persisted over time. Fifty-two mental health clinicians attended a 1-day GPM training and completed a 13-item assessment of attitudes about BPD before and after the training and again 6 months later. One-way repeated-measures analysis of variances and dependent sample t-tests demonstrated significant chang

Bidirectional Associations Between Asthma and Types of Mental Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Asthma and mental disorders frequently co-occur. Studies of their comorbidity have generally focused on associations related to a subset of mental disorders. OBJECTIVE: To estimate bidirectional associations between asthma and 10 broad types of mental disorders. METHODS: In a population-based cohort study, including all individuals born in Denmark between 1955 and 2011 (N = 5,053,471), we considered diagnoses of comorbid mental disorders among those with asthma, and vice versa, between 2000 and 2016. We used Cox regression models to calculate overall and time-dependent hazard rat

[Anxious (avoidant) personality disorder].

The anxious (avoidant or fearful) type of personality disorder has a lifetime prevalence of 5%, which makes it the most common form of personality disorder. Although it is one of the leading risk factors for severe depressive illnesses, anxiety disorders, substance dependence, eating disorders and chronic pain, its importance is frequently underestimated. Ambulatory treatment comprises psychoeducation, self-management and training in social competence.

When what I wish makes me worse ... to make coherence flexible.

This paper describes a psychotherapeutic constructivist intervention oriented to the resolution of implicative dilemmas, in order to promote personal change. It presents a clinical case study of a client with depression and with some dependent and obsessive functioning. The Repertory Grid Technique was administered along with symptom assessment (SCL-90-R) both at beginning and end of the psychotherapeutic process. Exploring themes emerged from Repgrid, several narratives, experiential and metaphoric strategies were used in order to explore and reconstruct meanings associated with the five impl

Nationwide Transdiagnostic Age and Sex Patterns in Mental Disorder Disease Development.

IMPORTANCE: Individuals with mental disorders often experience multiple disease episodes and diagnostic changes after initial psychiatric contact. However, studies that comprehensively investigate heterogeneity in disease development beyond pairs of comorbid diseases and mortality from a transdiagnostic perspective have been lacking. OBJECTIVE: To comprehensively study sex and age patterns of disease development for 7 major groups of mental disorders. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study included data from linkage of national Danish registers of all adult individuals living i

An examination of psychiatric comorbidities as a function of gender and substance type within an inpatient substance use treatment program.

BACKGROUND: There are elevated rates of comorbid psychiatric disorders among individuals with substance dependence; however, little research examines these rates within inpatient settings, particularly in relation to gender and type of substance. The current study aimed to fill this gap. METHOD: 465 patients (71.4% male) were recruited from an inpatient substance use treatment facility from 2006 to 2009. These patients were interviewed and diagnosed using the Structure Clinical Interview for DSM-IV and the Diagnostic Interview for Personality Disorders. RESULTS: 60.6% of patients with substa

Substance Use Disorders and Personality Pathology in Adolescence Although the use of alcohol or illegal drugs is often considered a common developmental phenomenon of adolescence, some individuals develop clinically relevant forms of dependence or abuse. Substance use disorders often cause psychosocial stress, they have adverse consequences on physical health, reduce life expectancy and increase the risk of developing comorbid psychiatric disorders. Personality disorders represent a severe comorbid disorder for adults, but there is still a lack of data for adolescent age groups. The present st

Interpretive group psychotherapy and dependent day hospital patients: a preliminary investigation.

A small group of highly dependent day hospital patients, together with a small number of 'potential' day hospital referrals sharing similar characteristics, were treated in twice weekly interpretive group psychotherapy for between seven and nine months. At the end of treatment three of four day hospital patients had made a successful separation from the day hospital, and at nine month follow-up outcome appeared improved. Only two of the six non-day hospital patients remained in the group, the reasons for which are discussed. The method of evaluation proved manageable, although it would be more

Antisocial personality disorder in primary care patients with somatization disorder.

Antisocial personality disorder and somatization disorder (SD) have been associated in previous research conducted primarily in patients from the mental health setting. We tested the hypothesis that patients with SD from the primary care setting had less likelihood of having comorbid antisocial personality disorder in a sample of 118 patients with SD. Two methods for diagnosing antisocial personality disorder were used: the Diagnostic Interview Schedule (DIS) and the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R, axis II (SCID-II). Eight percent of the women and between 18% and 25% (depending on

The relationship between child abuse and negative outcomes among substance users: psychopathology, health, and comorbidities.

BACKGROUND: Adults with substance use disorders (SUDs) report higher rates of child abuse than adults without SUDs. Prior work suggests that this abuse is associated with higher rates of psychosis, posttraumatic stress disorder, physical health problems, alcohol dependence, and cannabis dependence among substance users. Little is known about other problems associated with child abuse experienced by substance users. We hypothesized that among adults with SUDs, child abuse would be associated with elevated rates of all Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-IV-TR) psychiatric disorders, substanc

Suicide in psychiatric patients. A prospective study of 67 cases without initial signs of severe depression or alcoholism.

All cases from the county, who were subjected to post-mortem examination at the Department of Forensic Medicine, University of Lund with a diagnosis of suicide during 1949-1984, were compared with the inpatient register at the Department of Psychiatry, University Hospital, Lund during 1949-1969. During these years all patients were rated at discharge with a multidimensional schedule. All patients with initial ratings of severe depression/melancholia and alcoholism were analyzed separately and excluded from the present sample. The ratings of the suicide cases were compared with those of 8,046 o
