Neonatal and infantile erythrodermas.

The term neonatal or infantile erythroderma designates a generalized erythema covering more than 90% of the body surface area of neonates and young infants. Erythrodermas are not rare in this age group and have been associated with more than 40 diseases of different degrees of severity. Regardless of the underlying illness, impending acute symptoms of an impaired epidermal barrier function (hypothermia, dehydration, sepsis) must be recognized and treated adequately. Most often patients have to be hospitalized for incubator care and, if necessary, intravenous rehydration and antibiotic therapy.

Erythrodermic mastocytosis.

Erythrodermic mastocytosis is a rare variant of diffuse cutaneous mastocytosis in which the skin becomes red, thickened, and lichenified and has a doughy consistency with multiple small papules on its surface, giving a leathery appearance to the skin. In this report, I describe a curious case of erythrodermic mastocytosis that appears to be due to vasodilation rather than to mast cell infiltration of the skin. In my opinion, this case might be an example of generalized telangiectasia macularis eruptiva perstans. Results of all laboratory tests failed to demonstrate systemic mast cell involveme

Congenital syphilis presenting as desquamative dermatitis.

During the last 5 years the incidence of congenital syphilis has increased several-fold and reached epidemic proportions. This increase is directly related to a similar increase in cases of primary and secondary syphilis in women and has been linked to the use of "crack" cocaine. Factors responsible for the increase in reported cases of congenital syphilis include poor prenatal care, implementation of new surveillance case definition, failure to perform serological tests, treatment failures with benzathine penicillin, and maternal reinfection. Clinical manifestation of congenital syphilis are

Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome in an adult.

The staphylococcal form of toxic epidermal necrolysis or staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS) is exceptionally seen in an adult patient. We report a case of SSSS in a 21-year-old male who suffered from a fulminant pneumopathia due to a phage group II Staphylococcus aureus. The onset of that clinical picture in an adult patient is unusual and could be due to a deficient immunity, as previous case reports have emphasized. Unfortunately, the sudden death of our patient did not allow us to investigate his immunological defences.
