Dietary and metabolic factors in the pathogenesis of hidradenitis suppurativa: a systematic review.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a systemic recalcitrant inflammatory condition characterized by debilitating lesions with high morbidity. Its known association with obesity and smoking indicate correlation with other environmental factors, such as diet, suggesting a larger role for lifestyle modifications in disease treatment. This study seeks to assess the contribution of weight loss and dietary intake in HS management. A primary literature search was conducted using PubMed, Web of Science, and CINAHL in November 2018 to include association and intervention studies on the influence of diet a

Comparison of Weight Reduction, Change in Parameters and Safety of a Very Low Carbohydrate Diet in Comparison to a Low Carbohydrate Diet in Obese Japanese Subjects with Metabolic Disorders.

Recently, low-carbohydrate diets (LCDs) have gained worldwide attention. LCDs are potentially effective for Japanese overweight and obese individuals with metabolic disorders. However, few randomized trials of LCDs have focused on the difference between LCDs and VLCDs. We conducted a randomized, prospective study of 42 Japanese, obese adults aged 28-65 years to evaluate the efficacy and safety of LCD and VLCD. To ensure the accuracy of the study, all test meals were provided, and compliance was checked using a smartphone app. Body composition measurements and blood tests were performed before

Effect of green-Mediterranean diet on intrahepatic fat: the DIRECT PLUS randomised controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effectiveness of green-Mediterranean (MED) diet, further restricted in red/processed meat, and enriched with green plants and polyphenols on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), reflected by intrahepatic fat (IHF) loss. DESIGN: For the DIRECT-PLUS 18-month randomized clinical trial, we assigned 294 participants with abdominal obesity/dyslipidaemia into healthy dietary guidelines (HDG), MED and green-MED weight-loss diet groups, all accompanied by physical activity. Both isocaloric MED groups consumed 28 g/day walnuts (+440 mg/day polyphenols provided). The gree

Weight reduction on lactovegetarian and mixed diets. Changes in weight, nutrient intake, skinfold thicknesses and blood pressure.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a weight reduction programme based on a lactovegetarian diet has any beneficial effects on the weight, nutrient intake, blood pressure and skinfold thickness of overweight subjects compared with a programme based on a balanced mixed diet. The subjects consisted of three groups of moderately overweight persons, with a mean age of 38 years and a mean overweight of 38 per cent. Two groups had a weight reduction programme for 1 year; group 1 (n = 31) had a 1200 kcal lactovegetarian diet and group 2 (n = 37) had an isocaloric mixed diet. Group 3

Effects of lacto-ovo-vegetarian diet vs. standard-weight-loss diet on obese and overweight adults with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: a randomised clinical trial.

The aim of the study was to compare the effects of a lacto-ovo-vegetarian diet (LOV-D) vs. a standard weight-loss diet (SWL-D) on obese/overweight adults with NAFLD. Present randomised clinical trial recruited 75 overweight/obese adults with NAFLD, who were randomly assigned into LOV-D and SWL-D groups for 3 months. The LOV-D was designed based on eliminating meat, poultry, and fish; while including dairy products and eggs. The SWL-D was planned according to the standard food pyramid, which was free in all sources of food. Adherence to LOV-D significantly outperformed SWL-D in reducing levels

Smoking by young women with restrained eating following a food prime in the context of an alternative distractor.

Female smokers with elevated dietary restraint (high restrainers) may smoke more than nonrestrained eaters after a disinhibiting food event. The current study aimed to determine whether high restrainers smoke merely to distract themselves from unplanned eating or whether the weight-control aspects of smoking play a role. Primary aims were to test the effect of restraint status and a food prime on smoking and eating behavior in the presence of an alternative distractor (a computer tablet) and to examine the role of expectancies. Utilizing a between-subject design, female smokers (N = 128) were

[Conservative therapy of obesity].

The essentials of conservative treatment of obesity are supervision by a physician, psychological advice, nutritional information and physical activity. A very successful therapy of massively obese is induced by modified fasting. Drugs should be used only as an adjunct to the diet and should be prescribed only for a limited time period.

Effects of exercise with or without a hypocaloric diet on intermuscular and intramuscular fat: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Intermuscular (InterMAT) and intramuscular (IntraMAT) adipose tissues are key contributors to skeletal muscle function and metabolic health. OBJECTIVE: In this systematic review, we aimed to investigate the impact of different types of exercise with or without a hypocaloric diet on reducing InterMAT and IntraMAT in various muscle tissues. METHOD: A literature search was performed via PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Science from inception until February 2025. Eligible RCTs examined the effects of exercise compared to control in adults > 18 years. A narrative synthesis

A comparison of onset of binge eating versus dieting in the development of bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: This study further investigates the hypothesis that dieting is the precursor to the development of binge eating. METHOD: The temporal relationship of onset of binge eating and dieting is examined from retrospective self-reports collected at baseline from women participating in two bulimia nervosa (BN) treatment studies (N = 221). Twenty women were identified who reported binge eating prior to the onset of dieting ("binged first," BF). For comparison, 20 similar age individuals reporting dieting onset preceding that of binge eating ("dieted first," DF) were selected. RESULTS: A sub

Therapy for obesity--today and tomorrow.

Obesity poses a serious health hazard and its treatment is often disappointing. Besides conservative methods, the place of pharmacotherapy, very-low-calorie diets, and even, in selected cases, mechanical means or surgery can be considered. Effective drug treatment for obesity must reduce energy intake, or increase energy expenditure, or increase energy losses in faeces. All these possibilities have potential activities but also serious limitations. Current pharmacotherapy essentially uses anorectic drugs and the other approaches, although promising, are still under investigation. Of the anorec

Relation of dieting and voluntary weight loss to psychological functioning and binge eating.

Voluntary weight loss in obese patients consistently reduces negative emotions such as depression and anxiety in the short term. Dieting by persons of normal weight is associated with low self-esteem and depressive symptoms. Dieting is linked to the development and maintenance of eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, although the precise nature of this association is unclear. Dieting cannot be a sufficient causal condition and must combine with other still undetermined vulnerabilities to cause eating disorders. Identification of these risk factors must precede the deve

[Judicious use of anorectics].

Physicians treating adipose patients often hesitate to include drugs. Considering new developments in obesity research and drug-therapy, this attitude should be discussed. Anorectics of the amphetamine-group and analogues (derivates) react with the noradrenergic system and induce appetite-suppression. Fenfluramine in the d-1 configuration and isomeric dextro-rotation influence release of serotonin, reduce intake of food and increase sensation of saturation. In addition, various eating behavior disorders like nibbling and addiction to sweets are discussed. Use of Dextro-fenfluramine for these s
