OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the ability of Heidelberg retina tomography (HRT) in the diagnosis of primary open angle glaucoma (POAG).
METHODS: The topography of optic nerve head of 116 normal eyes and 99 eyes with POAG were examined using HRT. The differences of the optic disc parameters between two groups were compared. The topographic parameters of the optic nerve head were undergone stepwised discriminant analysis and the discriminant function was established. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the value of different variables of the clinical history, auditory and vestibular tests and handicap measurements to define intractable or disabling Ménière's disease.
METHODS: This is a prospective study with 212 patients of which 155 were treated with intratympanic gentamicin and considered to be suffering a medically intractable Ménière's disease. The previous descriptions of the optic nerve head were reviewed. A study was done using discriminant analysis, in which an 85% separation was obtained by means of the discriminant function in a prospective study. The false positives showed a higher incidence of subsequent visual field defects from the true negatives. The pitfalls of the use of the optic nerve head appearance in the recognition of glaucomatous visual field defects were discussed.
