Bone Marrow Necrosis After Curative Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Associated with Deep Diving.

Bone marrow necrosis, albeit an infrequent finding, is usually associated with highly proliferative malignant disorders, such as leukemia, lymphoma, or sickle cell anemia, solid tumor metastasis, and infections. It is also a typical finding in Caisson disease and in divers that developed decompression illness. Herein we report a case of bone marrow necrosis post deep diving in a bone marrow transplant recipient.

Diving into AA9-mediated transglutaminase 2 inhibition reveals ferroptosis as driver of anticancer effects.

Ferroptosis recently gained considerable attention in breast cancer research, particularly in triple-negative subtypes. In this context, emerging evidence links transglutaminase 2 (TG2) to aggressive tumour phenotypes, highlighting pharmacological TG2 inhibition as a promising therapeutic approach in aggressive breast cancer settings. Comparative analysis of independent RNA-sequencing datasets from distinct cellular models treated with irreversible TG2 inhibitors revealed ferroptosis as the only significantly enriched and commonly deregulated process. In triple-negative breast cancer cells, tr

Deep versus shallow decompression stops: illustration of different decompression strategies used in technical diving.

BACKGROUND: Despite evolution in decompression algorithms, decompression illness is still an issue. Reducing vascular gas emboli (VGE) production by varying decompression procedures is very common among divers. Several methods have been tried, either mechanical, cardiovascular, desaturation-aimed or biochemical, with encouraging results. In this study, we tested two different decompression methods: one called DEEP, where the decompression starts deeper, the other one SHALLOW, where shallower stops were planned, for the same dive and decompression time. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In total, 18 healt

Risk Factors of Dysbaric Osteonecrosis in Saturation Diving Identified through Magnetic Resonance Imaging Surveillance.

INTRODUCTION: Only a few cohort studies have investigated dysbaric osteonecrosis (DON) in saturation diving (SD) divers using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to detect early-stage DON. We aimed to investigate DON in the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) deep SD divers using MRI and examined the relationship between DON and the risk factors. METHODS: This study included 62 JMSDF SD divers. DON was diagnosed in the subjects' shoulders, hips, and knee joints using MRI and their clinical information. We analyzed subjects' diving records, including pre- and post-diving medical check infor…

Sex-based variations in breath-holding: oxygen storage and diving response among non-divers.

Breath-hold diving performances are typically better in men than in women. However, it is still being determined if there are differences in the physiological responses to breath-holding between the sexes. We conducted a study comparing the maximum breath-hold duration, heart rate (HR) reduction, peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2), and spleen volume and contraction in 37 men and 44 women, all of whom had no prior breath-holding experience. They performed two dry apneas separated by 2 min; the first was limited to 60 s, followed by a maximal effort apnea. HR and SpO2 were measured continuously…

Crustacean cardioactive peptide (CCAP) negatively regulates sand-diving behaviour in kuruma shrimp, Penaeus japonicus.

Kuruma shrimp (Penaeus japonicus) exhibits sand-diving behaviour. The genetic control mechanism of this behaviour is still unclear, although previous single-cell transcriptome sequencing suggests that crustacean cardioactive peptide (CCAP) may be involved. In this study, we cloned the CCAP precursor cDNA (Pj-CCAP) in kuruma shrimp. It was predicted that the gene can be translated into four related peptides and one mature peptide (PFCNAFTGC-NH2), and is highly similar to crustaceans and insects. The predicted Pj-CCAP itself is highly conserved in other crustaceans. RT-qPCR and in situ hybridiza…

Facial Barotrauma Mimicking Trauma: A Forensic Case of Mask Squeeze in a Diving Fatality.

Periorbital ecchymosis - commonly known as "raccoon eyes" - is a classical indicator of traumatic head injury, particularly basilar skull fractures. However, similar findings may also arise from non-traumatic causes, including systemic disease and barotrauma. We report a rare forensic case of bilateral periorbital ecchymosis caused by facial barotrauma in the absence of external trauma, observed in a fatal skin diving incident. A healthy man in his 20s lost consciousness during the second dive of a recreational session and was recovered from a depth of approximately 20 m. The presence of perio…

Fit for diving after musculoskeletal decompression sickness: how to detect and manage bone lesions?

Musculoskeletal decompression sickness (MS DCS) is a clinical condition characterized by joint pain following scuba diving. Recent studies have shown a potential link between MS DCS and bone lesions, including dysbaric osteonecrosis. This article highlights the importance of early detection and management of bone damage in MS DCS patients. It is recommended that a specialist diving doctor be consulted for a comprehensive assessment to ensure an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan. Ordering a joint MRI two months after the accident is the best way to detect the presence of intraosseous edema,…

Diving into CDC pregnancy data in the United States: longitudinal study and interactive application.

OBJECTIVE: Preterm birth (PTB) is a major determinant of neonatal mortality, morbidity, and childhood disability. In this article, we present a longitudinal analysis of the risk factors associated with PTB and how they have varied over the years: starting from 1968 when the CDC first started, reporting the natality data, up until 2021. Along with this article, we are also releasing an RShiny web application that will allow for easy consumption of this voluminous dataset by the research community. Further, we hope this tool can aid clinicians in the understanding and prevention of PTB. MATERIA

Acoustic signature of plastic marine debris mimics the prey items of deep-diving cetaceans.

It is largely assumed that odontocetes voluntarily ingest plastic marine debris because they visually mistake it for prey. However, deep-diving whales do not rely on visual systems to forage and instead employ echolocation. Whether or not these whales misinterpret acoustic signals that lead to the accidental ingestion of plastic is unknown. We examined this question by measuring the target strength of prey items (squid, squid beaks) and various naturally weathered and fouled plastics sourced from the North Carolina coastline in situ at sea at 38, 70 and 120 kHz. Here we show that 100 % of plas…

Case Studies in Physiology: Is blackout in breath-hold diving related to cardiac arrhythmias?

Syncope or "blackout" (BO) in breath-hold diving (freediving) is generally considered to be caused by hypoxia. However, it has been suggested that cardiac arrhythmias affecting the pumping effectivity could contribute to BO. BO is fairly common in competitive freediving, where athletes aim for maximal performance. We recorded heart rate (HR) during a static apnea (STA) competition, to reveal if arrhythmias occur. Four male freedivers with STA personal best (PB) of 349 ± 43 s, volunteered during national championships, where they performed STA floating face down in a shallow indoor pool. A non-…

Shallow Water Diving-Associated Alveolar Hemorrhage in an Active Duty Sailor: A Case Report.

Breath-hold diving is a common practice as a part of military dive training. An association between prior lung injury and a propensity for lung barotrauma may have the potential to impact mission readiness for combat divers, Pararescue, Combat Controllers, Army Engineer divers, and various units in Naval Special Warfare and Special Operations. Barotrauma is a common complication of diving, typically occurring at depths greater than 30 m (98.4 ft). Individuals with abnormal lung anatomy or function may be at increased risk of barotrauma at shallower depths than those with healthy lungs, renderi…
