Streptomyces griseus causes subcutaneous mycetomas in felines and dolphins; however, human mycetoma caused by S. griseus has not previously been reported. Hereby, we report a case of a 50-year-old female presenting with swelling in the left upper cervical region and the left cheek that lasted for 6 months. The fine needle aspiration (FNA) performed on the swelling yielded purulent material; on microscopy, actinomycosis was diagnosed. On culturing, the pus grew S. griseus. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of human mycetoma caused by S. griseus.

Listeria monocytogenes is the etiological agent of the listeriosis. Here, we described three draft genome sequences of L. monocytogenes isolated in Italy from stranded individuals of the striped dolphin Stenella coeruleoalba. All the genomes have been molecular typed through the multilocus sequence typing to identify the phylogenetic lineage, clonal complex, sublineage, and serogroup.

BACKGROUND: Along with the transition to the aquatic environment, cetaceans experienced profound changes in their skeletal anatomy, especially in the skull, including the posterodorsal migration of the external bony nares, the reorganization of skull bones (= telescoping) and the development of an extreme cranial asymmetry (in odontocetes). Telescoping represents an important anatomical shift in the topological organization of cranial bones and their sutural contacts; however, the impact of these changes in the connectivity pattern and integration of the skull has never been addressed.

We summarized the neuropathologic findings in 60 cetaceans stranded along the Italian coastline from 2002 to 2014. The following neuropathologic changes were detected in 45% (27/60) of animals: nonsuppurative meningo-encephalitides (30%, 18/60), nonspecific lesions (12%, 7/60), suppurative encephalitis (2%, 1/60), and neoplasm (2%, 1/60). No histologic lesions were found in 47% (28/60) of the specimens. Five (8%, 5/60) samples were unsuitable for analysis. Analysis with PCR detected Brucella spp., morbillivirus, and Toxoplasma gondii infection in one, six, and seven individuals, respectively.
