A complete battery of audiometric methods is required for the differential diagnosis of different hearing disabilities (including puretone audiometry, impedance, stapes reflex, speech audiometry, brainstam evoked response audiometry, otoacoustic emissions, etc.). In many cases, a comprehensive diagnosis is not possible. Here we describe a new technique based on a laser-Doppler vibrometer that has the potential for non-invasive diagnosis not only middle ear disease but also cochlear pathologies. Disturbance of cochlear function can be ascertained because the input impedance of the cochlea acts

To investigate whether cochlear progenitor cell transplantation into the inner ear can restore kanamycin-induced acute ototoxic sensorineural hearing loss, we established an acute ototoxic injury model via intraperitoneal injection of kanamycin and a diuretic. Cell transplantation was performed on the fifth day after model establishment. Two weeks post-transplantation, auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing assessed hearing recovery in mice. Subsequently, immunofluorescence staining of mouse cochleae analyzed the distribution and engraftment of transplanted cochlear stem cells within the in

Inner ear sensory hair cells are essential for auditory and vestibular functions. In mammals, loss of these cells leads to permanent hearing loss due to the inability of supporting cells to regenerate hair cells. In contrast, avian species exhibit a remarkable capacity for hair cell regeneration, primarily through the activation and proliferation of supporting cells. This review provides a comprehensive examination of the anatomical and molecular mechanisms underlying sensory hair cell regeneration in two critical avian inner ear structures: the basilar papilla and the utricle. We describe the

Autoimmune inner ear disease is frequently characterized by progressive bilateral hearing loss, which is not necessarily symmetrical. Vertigo, aural fullness, and tinnitus may also accompany it. There are 2 ways that the inner ear might be impacted: either as a primary disorder when the immune response directly attacks inner ear cells or as a secondary symptom of a systemic autoimmune disease. We describe the case of an 11-year-old boy with morphea, who was diagnosed with autoimmune inner ear disease after he developed hearing loss. This relationship in children has not yet been documented in

OBJECTIVE: Intratympanic injections are a safe, well tolerated procedure routinely performed by ENT's specialists. Intratympanic injections of gels have the potential to deliver therapeutics into the cochlea through the round window membrane prolonging the release of drugs in the inner ear compartment. Aim of the present review is to summarize clinical trials testing pharmacological treatments for inner ear pathologies through intratympanic gel formulations.
DATA SOURCES: Online databases (Google scholar and PubMed) and registers (Clinicaltrials.gov and Euclinicaltrial) were used to identify

Hearing loss, the most common human sensory defect worldwide, is a major public health problem. About 70% of congenital forms and 25% of adult-onset forms of deafness are of genetic origin. In total, 136 deafness genes have already been identified and there are thought to be several hundred more awaiting identification. However, there is currently no cure for sensorineural deafness. In recent years, translational research studies have shown gene therapy to be effective against inherited inner ear diseases, and the application of this technology to humans is now within reach. We provide here a

Hearing loss has become increasingly prevalent and causes considerable disability, thus gravely burdening the global economy. Irreversible loss of hair cells is a main cause of sensorineural hearing loss, and currently, the only relatively effective clinical treatments are limited to digital hearing equipment like cochlear implants and hearing aids, but these are of limited benefit in patients. It is therefore urgent to understand the mechanisms of damage repair in order to develop new neuroprotective strategies. At present, how to promote the regeneration of functional hair cells is a key sci

BACKGROUND: Due to an expansion in the usage of medications (such as anticancer therapies), increased exposure to noise, and an increase in life expectancy, the prevalence of inner ear disease-related hearing loss is rising. Diseases of the inner ear are frequently accompanied by other conditions, such as chronic heart failure, systemic inflammation, arterial hypertension, and cerebrovascular disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the profile of hospital admissions linked to inner ear diseases in England and Wales.
METHOD: This was an ecological descriptive study using public medic

Background: Survival and integrity of the spiral ganglion is vital for hearing in background noise and for optimal functioning of cochlear implants. Numerous studies have demonstrated that supplementation of supraphysiologic levels of the neurotrophins BDNF and NT-3 by pumps or gene therapy strategies supports spiral ganglion survival. The endogenous physiological levels of growth factors within the inner ear, although difficult to determine, are likely extremely low within the normal inner ear. Thus, novel approaches for the long-term low-level delivery of neurotrophins may be advantageous. O

Spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea is rare and may develop secondary to inner ear malformation. A possible diagnosis of CSF leak should be considered in any pediatric patient who presents with hearing impairment, rhinorrhea, or otorrhea. Temporal bone computed tomography should be performed in children with hearing impairments. We describe a case of congenital inner ear anomaly in a 12-month-old girl who presented with intermittent rhinorrhea after birth and detected hearing problems when she was 6 months. After diagnosis, the CSF leak was surgically repaired without complication

Oxidative stress is an important mechanism underlying cellular damage of the inner ear, resulting in hearing loss. In order to prevent hearing loss, several types of antioxidants have been investigated; several experiments have shown their ability to effectively prevent noise-induced hearing loss, age-related hearing loss, and ototoxicity in animal models. Exogenous antioxidants has been used as single therapeutic agents or in combination. Antioxidant therapy is generally administered before the production of reactive oxygen species. However, post-exposure treatment could also be effective. Pr
