Report about a case of relapsing polychondritis in a woman aged 60 years, which was proofed through autopsy. There was involvement of the trachea, the bronchial system and the cartilages of the ribs. The cartilages of nose and ear did not show any typical changes; therefore the diagnosis could not be established during life. The pecularities of the clinical picture and the pathohistological findings are reported in detail. It seems that the polychondritis is related in it's pathogenesis to the rheumatic disorders. tthe etiology, however, remains obscure.

Although the physiologic effects of ear deformity are negligible, the aesthetic and psychological impact on the patient can be profound. Significant ear malformations are prevalent in today's society and affect more than 5 percent of the population. Although the prominent ear results from either underdevelopment of the antihelix or an enlarged conchal bowl, the constricted ear is a product of helical down-folding and height deficiency. After a thorough evaluation, surgical management of the prominent ear must be approached in a careful, rational fashion. Although the surgeon may enjoy the wide

Nowadays, rhinoplasty is one of the most popular surgical procedures. Dorsal contour irregularities caused by various maneuvers, such as hump resection, are a major concern in patients who have undergone rhinoplasty. The most common graft used in this case is dorsal onlay graft which is made from sliced and crushed cartilage. Ear, nose and throat specialists usually use Swester table (mayo desk) for preparing the graft, if there is no other steril metal instrument. Crushed cartilage is done on a sterile gauze or on the tables' cover, as a result cartilage may be contaminated with particules fr

BACKGROUND: Cartilage-perichondrial grafts are often used for tympanic membrane and middle-ear reconstructions. Tragal and conchal cartilages are most frequently used for this purpose. Studies have shown that slicing the cartilage to less than 0.5 mm thickness improves acoustic benefit. However, the thickness of the cartilage in a given population may not be uniform.
OBJECTIVE: This descriptive cross-sectional study aimed to determine the average thickness of tragal cartilage (in terms of age and sex) in an Indian population.
METHOD: A prospective study of 61 tragal cartilages harvested duri

Cartilage is a relatively simple connective tissue that plays a variety of roles in the human body, including joint support and protection, load bearing of the intervertebral discs, joint lubrication, formation of the external structure of the ears and nose and support of the trachea. The maintenance of cartilage homeostasis is therefore crucial. Cartilage-related diseases are difficult to diagnose and treat because their molecular and pathological mechanisms are not fully understood. Melatonin, which has a wide range of physiological effects, is an endocrine hormone mainly secreted by the pin

The auricle derives from six hillocks arising from the first and second branchial arches. Different hillocks give rise to different parts of the pinna. In the course of embryonic development, the auricle migrates postero-cranially as the mandible enlarges. Auricular malformations, such as microtia, are thought to be related to cell death of the first and second arch derivatives. The prevalence and characteristics of microtia vary in different populations. The prevalence ranges from 0.83 to 17.4 per 10,000. Microtia is more common in males, and right-sided dominance varies from 57 to 67%. The p

BACKGROUND: Development of the auditory ossicles is initiated by induction of the cartilage primordium of each ossicle between the fifth and seventh fetal week. It is well known that primordium of the upper part of the ossicular chain is derived from the first branchial arch and that of the lower part develops from the second branchial arch. Previous studies have suggested that auditory ossicular malformations are caused by deficiencies in the early period of induction of the cartilage primordium. However, auditory ossicular malformations can occur at any developing stage, and their clinical f

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional (3D) digital imaging and printing techniques have been popularly applied in microtia reconstruction. However, there is a lack of clinical report of using them to create 3D printed ear subunit models for cartilage framework fabrication.
METHODS: A retrospective study of patients who underwent auricle reconstruction with 3D templates was performed. Patients' demography, surgical complications, framework accuracy, and aesthetic outcomes of the reconstructed auricles were analyzed.
RESULTS: Twenty cases included in this study. Complications were minor. The average (

Auricular reconstruction is essential for restoring facial symmetry and achieving a well-contoured, natural-appearing ear. Traditional methods using autologous costal cartilage often delay reconstruction until around age 10, when sufficient rib cartilage is available, which can pose physical and psychological challenges for pediatric patients. Porous high-density polyethylene (PHDPE) implants offer significant advantages, including the ability to perform reconstruction earlier, reduced morbidity, improved ear definition, and the possibility of a single-stage outpatient procedure. On the basis

OBJECTIVE: Chest deformity is one of the complications that occurs after costal cartilage harvesting for auricle reconstruction. In this study, we presented a novel method of free dermofat grafting to repair cartilage defect and aimed to evaluate its effect in ameliorating chest deformity.
METHODS: Seventy-six pediatric patients were included in the study, comprising free dermofat grafting group (n = 38) and control group (n = 38). After harvesting costal cartilage, empty perichondrial space of right seventh costal cartilage was filled with free dermofat grafts in free dermofat grafting group

Alar base retraction is a common yet difficult problem faced by the rhinoplasty surgeon. It may be caused by weakened, overresected lateral crura, vestibular lining deficiencies, or congenital alar malpositioning. Methods of correction include soft tissue manipulation, auricular composite grafting, and cartilage grafting. We present the senior author's graded approach to alar retraction using auricular composite grafting, alar rim grafting, and lateral crural strut graft placement with caudal lateral crural repositioning.

Relapsing polychondritis is a systemic disease characterized by inflammation of cartilage and proteoglycan-rich tissues leading to progressive deformity and dysfunction of the involved structures. Ear and nasal chondritis and/or polyarthritis are the most common clinical forms of the disease (80%), but all types of cartilage can potentially be involved. Due to the polymorphic nature of the disease, the diagnosis of relapsing polychondritis often remains unclear due to non-specific symptoms. In this article, we offer a clinical observation of this disease.

BACKGROUND: Auricular fistulas, typically excised due to infection risk, consist of intact skin and soft tissue when uninfected. A large fistula lumen with sufficient tissue coverage over cartilage and no infection during stable periods may be viable for reuse. This article explores using non-infected fistulas as soft tissue sources for microtia reconstruction.
METHOD: Between January 2020 and October 2023, a total of 24 patients diagnosed with concha-type microtia were enrolled in this retrospective study. The correction of ear deformities is achieved by utilizing tissue harvested from the a

Total ear reconstruction for microtia is usually accomplished in 2 stages which is known as Nagata technique. After framework fabrication and implantation, the elevation procedure is required as a second step surgery. The authors are introducing a novel material for augmenting projection of rib cartilage framework in microtia treatment.

Although the majority of conditions involving the ear and temporal bone are inflammatory or epithelial based, cartilage and osseous entities will also be encountered. The pathologic examination of these underlying cartilaginous and osseous structures and their histologic findings and associated differential diagnoses will be discussed. Correlation with clinical and imaging findings are also critical for accurate determination of the pathologic entity.

Ear piercing is a primitive tradition among the human being. It reflects the culture of many religions, tribes, and communities, predominately adopted by the females. We reported a sixteen years old girl with painful swelling of both pinnas for last one month following piercing the pinna. She was treated locally by general practitioner without significant improvement. On examination frank abscess were detected in both pinna. Under general anesthesia incision drainage and deep curettage was done. She was treated with ciprofloxacin 750 mg 12 hourly for 2 weeks and recovery was uneventful. After
