BACKGROUND: The forearm flexor-pronator muscles act as a dynamic elbow stabilizer against elbow valgus load during baseball pitching. The el … s of these muscles could have greater elbow valgus load during pitching and be at a higher risk for elbow injuries. The measurement of the elasticities of the FCU and FDS may be useful for identifying young baseball pitchers at risk of sustaining elbow injuries.

Increased physical activity in childhood has resulted in a large number of sports-related injuries. Although there is overlap between the sports-related injuries seen in pediatric and adult patients, important differences exist in the injury patterns of pediatric patients. These differences are related to the continuous changes in the developing skeleton and its relationship with adjacent soft tissues. The imbalance in strength between the growing bones and the nearby tendons and ligaments makes the bones prone to acute and chronic injuries. Acute injuries are more common in contact sports suc

BACKGROUND: Distal humeral fractures of type C by AO are serious musculoskeletal injuries, affecting the function of the elbow and upper limb. The authors present the results of treatment of these injuries with the use of two LCP plates.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We report on 25 patients aged 26-75 years who were operated on between 2008 and 2010. We examined 20 patients. Treatment results were evaluated basing on patient histories (Oxford Elbow Score), clinical examination (Mayo Elbow Score) and radiographs. We rated the percentage loss of movement in relation to the healthy limb.
RESULTS: Bony

BACKGROUND: Surgical treatment for terrible triad injuries of the elbow (defined as elbow dislocations with concomitant fractures of the radial head and coronoid) remains a challenging clinical problem. Specifically, the question of whether to repair or replace the radial head remains controversial.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We compared patients with terrible triad injuries of the elbow whose radial head fracture was treated with either internal fixation and internal fixation (ORIF) or radial head arthroplasty in terms of (1) clinical outcome measures (DASH and Broberg-Morrey scores, ROM), (2) elbo

Background: Cartilage injuries of the hand, wrist and elbow are common and may be managed by a variety of established procedures. While much literature has been devoted to cartilage injuries in the joints of the lower extremity, what data is available regarding treatment of similar injuries in the upper extremity is unknown. This systematic review assesses current procedures utilised to treat isolated cartilage injuries in the upper extremity and their outcomes. Methods: A systematic review was performed using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelin

BACKGROUND: Varus posteromedial rotatory instability typically results in an isolated anteromedial coronoid (AMC) fracture without an associated radial head fracture or elbow dislocation. However, recent series have shown concomitant radial head fractures, and elbow dislocations may be seen in association with AMC fractures in other injury patterns with an unclear effect on patient outcomes. Therefore, our objective was to compare postoperative patient outcomes in AMC fractures with and without concomitant radial head fractures or elbow dislocations.
METHODS: A retrospective review of patient

BACKGROUND: While the majority of terrible triad elbow injuries (ulnohumeral dislocation with radial head and coronoid fractures) are managed surgically, nonoperative treatment may be appropriate in selected patients, but results with this approach have been limited by very small studies.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We assessed (1) functional outcomes using two validated questionnaires, (2) elbow ROM, strength, and stability, (3) the presence of union and arthritis on radiographs, and (4) complications among a group of patients managed nonoperatively for terrible triad injuries.
METHODS: Between 200…

The objective of this investigation was to determine the effect of wrist guard use on all upper-extremity injuries in snowboarders. This matched case-control study was conducted at 19 ski areas in Quebec, Canada. Cases were 1,066 injured snowboarders who reported upper-extremity injuries to the ski patrol during the 2001-2002 season. Controls were 970 snowboarders with non-upper-extremity injuries who were matched to cases on ski area and the nearest date, age, and sex, in that order. The response rate was 71.8% (73.5% for cases and 70.1% for controls). Cases were compared with controls with r

INTRODUCTION: Vascular injury associated withclosed posterior elbow dislocations is rare and it usually occurs along with open dislocation, anterior dislocation, penetrating injuries, dislocations associated with fracture. We report such a case of closed posterior elbow dislocation with complete brachial artery rupture.
CASE REPORT: A 58 years old lady sustained posterior dislocation of right elbow following a fall at home. She presented three days later with complaints of severe pain, swelling around the right elbow and numbness of fingers following a closed reduction done elsewhere. Compute

Injuries and disorders of the elbow in athletes are common especially among throwing athletes. Common injuries encountered in the throwing athlete include ulnar collateral ligament injuries, ulnar neuritis, capitellar osteochondritis dissecans, valgus extension overload with posterior olecranon impingement, olecranon stress fracture, and loose bodies. A thorough knowledge of both the functional anatomy as well as throwing biomechanics are required to properly diagnosis and treat these problems. Nonoperative and surgical techniques have continued to advance over the last 25 years allowing for i

OBJECTIVE: The aim of surgical treatment is reconstruction of the coronoid process' bony anatomy.
INDICATIONS: Large shear fractures of the coronoid process (Regan-Morrey type II-III, O'Driscoll "tip" subtype 2 and "basal" subtype 1-2) and fractures of the anteromedial facet (O'Driscoll "anteromedial" subtype 1-3) can occur isolated or as part of the "terrible triad" injuries to the elbow. Due to the resulting instability of these injuries, surgical reconstruction is generally indicated.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: In case of major accompanying soft tissue injuries to the elbow or an elbow infection,

The elbow is a complex joint designed to withstand a wide range of dynamic exertional forces. The location and quality of elbow pain can generally localize the injury to one of the four anatomic regions: anterior, medial, lateral, or posterior. The history should include questions about the onset of pain, what the patient was doing when the pain started, and the type and frequency of athletic and occupational activities. Lateral and medial epicondylitis are two of the more common diagnoses and often occur as a result of occupational activities. Patients have pain and tenderness over the affect

We treated 50 patients (average age 47.9 years) with a stabilized subcutaneous transposition of the ulnar nerve. The average follow-up period was 42.4 months. The indication was cubital tunnel syndrome in 19 patients and injuries around the elbow in 31 patients. Postoperatively, satisfactory results were obtained in all the patients, and there was no complication or aggravation of the preoperative symptoms. None of the patients experienced slipping back of the nerve to the cubital tunnel. In the 31 patients with injuries around the elbow, there was only one patient with transient aggravation o

BACKGROUND: Of the estimated 22.5 million people participating in in-line skating in the United States in 1995, about 100,000 were sufficiently injured so as to require emergency department care. We investigated the effectiveness of wrist guards, elbow pads, knee pads, and helmets in preventing skating injuries.
METHODS: We used data from the 91 hospital emergency departments participating in the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System, a national probability sample of randomly selected hospitals with 24-hour emergency departments. Injured in-line skaters who sought medical attention b

Terrible triad elbow injuries, consisting of fractures of the radial head and coronoid with ulnohumeral dislocation, are challenging to treat. They require a comprehensive understanding of the complex anatomy of the elbow to effectively treat all of the pathology and create a stable, congruent joint. The authors present a case of a terrible triad injury with avulsion of the triceps and flexor-pronator mass after a low-energy fall in a young patient. Although most terrible triad fracture-dislocations can be successfully treated with coronoid fixation, radial head fixation or replacement, and re…

BACKGROUND: Ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries are prevalent in baseball pitchers. Epidemiological research has identified body weight as a risk factor.
PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of anthropometric characteristics (ie, height, weight, and related measures) on elbow varus torque in adult baseball pitchers. It was hypothesized that weight and height would each be correlated with elbow varus torque.
STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory study.
METHODS: Anthropometric and fastball pitching biomechanical data from 627 collegiate and professio
