Terrible triad of the elbow and the Essex-Lopresti injury are both rare lesions with a historically poor clinical outcome. We present the case of a unique association of the two injuries with an elbow dislocation, radial and coronoid process fractures and a distal radioulnar joint dislocation due to an interosseous membrane rupture. The case was managed with closed reduction of the elbow dislocation and distal radioulnar joint followed by open reduction and repair of the damaged structures in the elbow and an unloading of the interosseous membrane. A high index of suspicion with a detailed exa

Sequelae of elbow trauma are complicated to manage. Undiagnosed instability patterns are important to recognize to get the elbow into concentric alignment for further reconstructive efforts. Stiffness is also common after elbow trauma. Surgeons should be familiar with the different approaches to the elbow to safely address stiffness. Non-arthroplasty and arthroplasty salvage options are also important to understand because the indications are expanding and outcomes for these procedures are being better understood.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: The elbow is one of the most mobile joints, and its movement is very important. Bony ankylosed elbow is an unco … d restore normal mobility compatible with ADL.
CLINICAL DISCUSSION: Complete bony ankylosis of the elbow joint may be caused by trauma, rheumatic disease, burns, congenital stiffness and other conditions. Even with the compensation of shoulder and wrist, it will still have a great impact on upper limb function. Whether to treat mainly depends on whether the …

BACKGROUND: Primary synovial chondromatosis is a rare benign disease that occurs in the joint mucosa.
CASE PRESENTATION: In this case report, a 14-year-old gymnast sustained pain in both elbows for 2 months with limited elbow joint activity. The initial diagnosis of bilateral elbow synovial chondromatosis was performed by physical examination and imaging report. Later, the patient was treated with open surgery on both sides of the elbow, including all loose bodies were removed out and the proliferative synovia were cut off. Histopathology reports confirmed synovial chondromatosis.

Loss of elbow motion can lead to disability in everyday gestures, recreational activities, and work. Unfortunately, the elbow joint is particularly prone to stiffness because of its complex anatomy and biomechanics. The etiology of elbow stiffness is varied and must be diagnosed accurately in order to allow optimal treatment, which may be challenging for surgeons and physiotherapists. Its treatment can be either conservative, arthroscopic or surgical, with a trend for arthroscopic procedures when conservative treatment fails. There is no consensus on the optimal imaging workup for elbow joint …

PURPOSE: Valgus load opens the medial elbow compartment, causing elongation of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) that can eventually lead to attenuation and failure. Ideally, the muscles surrounding the medial aspect of elbow joint should coordinate medial elbow compression to prevent the medial elbow compartment from opening and loading the UCL. This study aimed to determine whether baseball pitchers have sufficient elbow varus strength to unload the UCL during pitching.
METHODS: Using an electromagnetic tracking device, we measured the peak elbow varus moment during pitches (fastball, sli…

BACKGROUND: Every joint participates in a specific range of motion (ROM) while operating a motor vehicle safely. In current literature, there is a paucity of how movement restrictions of the elbow flexion and extension can be compensated by adjacent joints to ensure safe driving. The aim of this study was to analyze movement patterns of the kinematic chain consisting of wrist, elbow, and shoulder while driving with restricted elbow joint.
METHODS: Twenty participants completed a driving course in a driving simulator in two conditions: a) free ROM of all joints vs. b) restricted right elbow in…

Elbow arthroscopy was performed in 100 dogs with foreleg lameness localised to the elbow joint, bilaterally in 48 of them, making a total of 148 joints examined. Lesions in the area of the medial coronoid process varied from cartilage fissures in 13 to fragmentation in 91, chondromalacia-like lesions in 27. This last lesion has not been reported previously in the veterinary literature. Kissing lesions on the medial side of the humeral condyle were present in 83 joints, whereas lesions of osteochondritis dissecans were found in only three. All these lesions were associated with varying signs of…

INTRODUCTION: This study investigates the incidence, risk factors for, and clinical outcomes of hematoma following total elbow arthroplasty.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patient and surgical characteristics as predictors of post-operative hematoma in 382 total elbow arthroplasty (196 primary, 157 revision, and 29 conversion) between May 2004 and February, 2017. For comparison of outcomes, cases were matched (1:2) with controls by age, gender, type of surgery, and surgical indication.
RESULTS: Nineteen post-operative hematomas (5.0%; 19/382) were identified. Total elbow arthroplasty f

Primary osteoarthritis of the elbow is characterized by painful stiffness, mechanical symptoms, and the presence of hypertrophic osteophytes. Preservation of the joint space is common and may account for the good results that are usually achieved with nonoperative treatment and nonprosthetic arthroplasty. Elbow osteoarthritis typically affects middle-aged men who engage in strenuous manual activity. Open or arthroscopic capsular release and removal of impinging osteophytes are the primary surgical treatment options. The relative sparing of joint cartilage makes elbow osteoarthritis unique in t

BACKGROUND: Bilateral trans-radial trans-scaphoid perilunate fracture-dislocation is one of the less common injuries of the wrist, occurring as a consequence of high-energy trauma. Its coincidence with bilateral elbow dislocation is extremely rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: The authors present a case of a 24-year old male of Czech origin who attained this unique injury by falling from a height of 4 m onto both upper extremities. Bilateral open reduction of the wrists using both palmar and dorsal approaches and closed reduction of both elbow joints was performed. The arms were immobilized in casts fo…

This section is dedicated to the comprehensive evaluation of the overhead throwing athlete's elbow. The elbow provides a unique diagnostic dilemma that requires extensive knowledge and appreciation of elbow anatomy and kinematics, given the extreme forces seen across the elbow during the overhead throwing motion, the superficial nature of the majority of anatomic structures, and the complex interplay among bony, ligamentous, musculotendinous, and neurologic structures. The physical examination of the ulnar collateral ligament, valgus extension overload syndrome, medial and lateral epicondyliti

Magnetic resonance imaging provides clinically useful information in assessing the elbow joint. Superior depiction of muscles, ligaments, and tendons as well as the ability to directly visualize nerves, bone marrow, and hyaline cartilage are advantages of magnetic resonance imaging relative to conventional imaging techniques. Ongoing improvements in surface coil design and newer pulse sequences have resulted in higher quality magnetic resonance images of the elbow. Traumatic and degenerative disorders of the elbow are well seen with MR imaging. The sequelae of medial traction and lateral compr…

Distal humeral fractures are infrequent occurrences in clinical practice and reports of nonunion following comminuted fractures of the distal humerus, particularly those resulting in pseudarthrosis formation and severe pseudoarthritis, are exceedingly rare. This report describes the utilization of a 3D-printed customized semi-restrictive elbow prosthesis as a treatment modality for severe pseudoarthritis following comminuted fractures of the distal humerus. A 51-year-old male presented to the orthopedic outpatient department with a history of left elbow joint pain and restricted movement persi…

Four cases of tardy ulnar nerve palsy associated with a cubitus varus deformity of the elbow secondary to a supracondylar fracture of the hu … his can have a direct effect on the position and instability of the ulnar nerve. Incongruity of the elbow joint due to cubitus varus deformity also may cause osteoarthritis changes. As a result, ulnar neuropathy may develop from irritation to the ulnar nerve from the posttraumatic osteoarthritic changes at the elbow joint.

An adolescent, right hand-dominant, baseball pitcher presented to sports medicine clinic with posterolateral right elbow pain over 4 months. He rated his pain as 8/10 with pitching, especially at the late cocking phase of throwing. Prior to consult, he had rested 3 months from pitching, progressing to strengthening exercises, with no pain relief. On physical examination, he had 120° of active external rotation, 80° of active internal rotation, mild tenderness to palpation over the capitellum and normal elbow radiography. Magnetic resonance arthrogram of the right elbow revealed subtle, postero
