Impairment of aversive memory reconsolidation by localized intracranial electrical stimulation.

Reconsolidation of long-term memory is blocked in animal models by macromolecular synthesis inhibitors, resulting in item-specific post-retrieval amnesia. The induction of such amnesia could ameliorate traumatic memories and phobias. However, this pharmacological approach is of limited value in humans because of toxicity. Here we report that reconsolidation of conditioned taste aversion in the rat is impaired by localized intracranial electrical stimulation. Lasting impairment was obtained only when stimulation was applied during memory reactivation and only to the dysgranular insular cortex b

Seizure-related automatic locomotion triggered by intracerebral electrical stimulation.

We describe the case of an eight-year-old boy, who underwent a video-stereo EEG (SEEG) investigation for the presurgical assessment of drug-resistant epilepsy, related to a right fronto-lateral cortical dysplasia and who became seizure-free after epilepsy surgery. The unexpected finding of the investigations was that intracerebral, high frequency (50 Hz) electrical stimulation (HFS) triggered the emergence of automatic and involuntary forward-backward locomotion during a focal seizure while the boy was standing. This clinical manifestation was different from the chaotic motor activity describe

Central contributions to contractions evoked by tetanic neuromuscular electrical stimulation.

Tetanic electrical stimulation applied over human muscle or peripheral nerve generates contractions by depolarizing motor axons beneath the stimulating electrodes. However, the simultaneous depolarization of sensory axons can also contribute to the contractions by the synaptic recruitment of spinal motoneurons. Maximizing this central contribution may be beneficial for reducing muscle atrophy or restoring movement for persons with movement disorders.

Visual cortical potentials of the mouse evoked by electrical stimulation of the retina.

An electrical evoked potential (EEP) of the visual system is a summed electrical record of the visual cortex in response to electrical stimulation of the retina. It is the primary method in the assessment of a visual prosthesis which targets at restoring vision to individuals with disease of the outer retina. However despite marked enthusiasm in the fabrication of such devices, little is known about the feasibility of such devices with the visually deprived brain. Recent research in visual plasticity has demonstrated that the adult brain retains marked plasticity following visual deafferentati

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation induced forelimb movement in a rodent model.

Upper extremity neuromuscular electrical stimulation (FNS) has long been utilized as a neuroprosthesis to restore hand-grasp function in individuals with neurological disorders and injuries. More recently, electrical stimulation is being used as a rehabilitative therapy to tap into central nervous system plasticity. Here, we present initial development of a rodent model for neuromuscular stimulation induced forelimb movement that can be used as a platform to investigate stimulation-induced plasticity. The motor points for flexors and extensors of the shoulder, elbow, and digits were identified

Gastric electrical stimulation reduces gastric tone energy dependently.

OBJECTIVE: Impaired gastric accommodation is one of the major pathophysiological factors in functional dyspepsia (FD). Gastrointestinal electric stimulation (GES) as a potential therapy for treating patients with motility disorders has been applied in animal models and clinical practice. However, the response of proximal gastric tone to different GES has not been fully understood. Therefore, the aims of this study were to investigate the effects of GES with different parameters on gastric tone and to estimate the relationship between gastric volume, stimulation energy, and symptoms. Electrical stimulation to induce propulsive contractions in the porcine descending colon.

Electrical stimulation of the colon can improve transit in slow-transit constipation, or enable controlled emptying in colostomy patients. Preliminary studies showed that sequential stimulation of consecutive colon segments induced serial contractions resulting in colonic propulsion. This study was performed to optimize the stimulation parameters. The electrodes were inserted under the serosa of the descending colon of pigs. Charge-balanced rectangular pulses at 10 Hz were delivered in consecutive sessions. Electrically evoked contractions (ECs) were monitored using impedance planimetry and ma

Hypothesis that vagal reinervation of diaphragm could sensitise it to electrical stimulation.

The hypothesis proposed is that restoration of functional capacity of denervated diaphragm may be achieved by reinervating it with vagus nerve. Following trauma, carcinomatose infiltration, and/or large thoracic surgery and neck surgery, phrenic nerve is frequently injured. Reinervation even in the most favourable conditions would not follow and diaphragm would rest permanently denervated and paralysed. This results in unilateral or bilateral paralysis of diaphragm. In principle, intermittent electrical stimulation of the phrenic nerve or diaphragm could elicit regular diaphragm contractions a

Functional electrical stimulation in tetraplegic patients to restore hand function.

The purpose of this collective review is to describe a new form of functional electrical stimulation called neuroprosthesis. This unique technology has been devised to produce lateral pinch and palmar grasp in persons with C5 and C6 motor level spinal cord injuries. This neuroprosthesis includes external as well as implanted components. First, a receiver is surgically implanted into the patient's chest above a pectoralis major muscle. The receiver stimulator is then connected to 8 surgically implanted epimysial or intramuscular electrodes. Restoration of upper extremity function can greatly im

Excessive reflexes in spinal cord injury triggered by electrical stimulation.

Interaction of electrocutaneous stimulation with an impaired human motor control system may result in unstable reflex loops causing excessive spastic reactions. These contractions are usually excluded from analysis since the presence of spasm is one of the criteria commonly applied for discarding a contraction. They may, however, provide interesting information on the nature of spasticity. The dorsiflexor muscles of four SCI subjects were activated by means of surface electrical stimulation and the isometric ankle moment was measured. Short bursts of constant stimulation frequency at seven dif

Characterization of atrioventricular nodal response to electrical left vagal stimulation.

The dynamic effect of left vagal stimulation on atrioventricular conduction was studied in six isofluorane-anesthetized dogs ranging in weight from 22 to 29 kg. The cervical vagus nerve trunks were left intact and no beta-adrenergic blockade was produced so that any influences of the sympathetic nervous system and autonomic reflex activity could be observed. Atrial pacing was used to control the heart rate while single, short trains of left vagal stimulation were delivered and timed to occur at different instances during the cardiac cycle. The magnitude of the A-V delay depended on the instant

Cochlear implants and electrical brainstem stimulation in sensorineural hearing loss.

Cochlear implants and multichannel auditory brainstem implants enable patients with bilateral total or profound hearing loss to receive at least acoustic information. Both types of prosthesis are based on electrical stimulation of the auditory pathway. Different speech coding strategies and the number of electrodes used may influence the postoperative results. The preoperative evaluation of patients is of utmost importance. The cochlear implant is suitable for patients with hearing loss due to inner ear disorders, but who have functioning hearing nerve. Patients with a defect of the hearing ne

Percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation: an alternative to TENS in the management of sciatica.

Sciatica is a common pain problem and current pharmacologic therapies have proven inadequate for many patients. The objective of this sham-controlled investigation was to compare a novel non-pharmacologic technique, percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (PENS), to transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) in the management of the radicular pain associated with sciatica. Sixty-four consenting patients with sciatica due to lumbar disc herniation were treated with PENS, TENS and sham-PENS according to a randomized, single-blinded, cross-over study. All patients had been maintained on
