ABSTRACT In the immediate management of patients with spinal cord injury (SCI), patients are typically observed for a period of time to determine whether voluntary control of bladder function returns. Therefore, bladder reinnervation surgeries are not likely to be performed immediately after the injury. We performed genitofemoral to pelvic nerve transfer (GF NT) surgery in canines at 1 and 3 months after bladder denervation (transection of S1 and S2 spinal roots) to determine whether this type of bladder reinnervation surgery has potential clinical feasibility. Nerve cuff electrodes were impla

OBJECTIVE: Electrically evoked auditory brainstem responses (eABRs) can be recorded before cochlear implant (CI) surgery to verify auditory nerve function, and is particularly helpful in to assess the function of the auditory nerve in cases of auditory nerve hypoplasia. This is the first study to compare three preimplant eABRs recording techniques: 1) standard extracochlear, 2) novel intracochlear, and 3) conventional intracochlear with the CI.
STUDY DESIGN: A within-participants design was used where eABRs were sequentially measured during CI surgery using three methods with stimulation from

Active implantable neurological devices like deep brain stimulators have been used over the past few decades to treat movement disorders such as those in people with Parkinson's disease and more recently, in psychiatric conditions like obsessive compulsive disorder. Electrode-tissue interfaces that support safe and effective targeting of specific brain regions are critical to success of these devices. Development of directional electrodes that activate smaller volumes of brain tissue requires electrodes to operate safely with higher charge densities. Coatings such as conductive hydrogels (CHs)

Objective. Previous preclinical and clinical studies have demonstrated that pudendal nerve is a promising target for restoring bladder control. The spatial proximity between the pudendal nerve and its accompanying blood vessels in the pudendal canal provides an opportunity for endovascular neurostimulation, which is a less invasive approach compared to conventional chronically implanted electrodes. In this study, we investigated the feasibility of excitatory stimulation and kilohertz-frequency block of the compound pudendal nerve in sheep using a stent-mounted electrode array.Approach. In a se

BACKGROUND: A key requirement for retinal prostheses is the ability for safe removal or replacement. We examined whether suprachoroidal electrode arrays can be removed or replaced after implantation.
METHODS: Suprachoroidal electrode arrays were unilaterally implanted into 13 adult felines. After 1 month, arrays were surgically explanted (n = 6), replaced (n = 5) or undisturbed (n = 2). The retina was assessed periodically using fundus photography and optical coherence tomography. Three months after the initial implantation, the function of replaced or undisturbed arrays was assessed by measu

In this work, we introduce carbon as a novel electrode material in retinal prosthesis. We fabricate Si-based photovoltaic retinal implants with single p-n junctions in 40 µm and 200 µm pixels and successfully integrate pyrolytic carbon electrodes. Single pixels provide an open-circuit voltage of up to 0.5 V under near-infrared (NIR) illumination, demonstrating the functionality of the miniaturized solar cells despite the high thermal budget of the pyrolysis process. In electrophysiological ex vivo experiments with mouse retinal tissue, the intra- and extracellular spike activity significantly

Experimental induced phonation in the dog has been used in short-term studies by several investigators and has proved quite useful in laryngeal research. In this study a long-term canine phonation model is described that uses permanently implanted electrodes on the superior and recurrent laryngeal nerves. A serial induced phonation model has not been previously reported and is needed for laryngeal research in which voice results are a primary end point. Inexpensive, reliable, nontoxic electrodes were designed and fabricated. The laryngeal nerves were found to be quite susceptible to injury, ne

Naturalistic sensory feedback is crucial for improving the functionality and acceptance of upper-limb prostheses. Electrical stimulation of peripheral nerves via implanted electrodes has shown a viable approach to providing real-time sensory information to hand prostheses. Although the loss of digits accounts for most upper-limb amputations, no existing digital prosthesis incorporates sensory feedback. This would be particularly important in the case of thumb amputation, as it leads to major functional impairments. Here, we present a computational model to assess the feasibility of using a cuf

PURPOSE: Detection of complications during rehabilitation and postoperative follow-up after cochlear implantation is essential, especially in children and cognitively impaired patients. Electrode array migration can affect outcomes and must be detected early. Traditional radiographic methods, although effective, are costly and expose patients to radiation. This case report discusses the use of a previously published impedance-based model for cochlear implant array localization in a child with Aymé-Gripp syndrome.
METHODS: Impedance telemetry data and X-ray images were collected at the time of

Macro-sieve electrodes were implanted in the sciatic nerve of five adult male Lewis rats following spinal cord injury to assess the ability of the macro-sieve electrode to interface regenerated peripheral nerve fibers post-spinal cord injury. Each spinal cord injury was performed via right lateral hemisection of the cord at the T9-10 site. Five months post-implantation, the ability of the macro-sieve electrode to interface the regenerated nerve was assessed by stimulating through the macro-sieve electrode and recording both electromyography signals and evoked muscle force from distal musculatu

BACKGROUNDA long-held goal of vision therapy is to transfer information directly to the visual cortex of blind individuals, thereby restoring a rudimentary form of sight. However, no clinically available cortical visual prosthesis yet exists.METHODSWe implanted an intracortical microelectrode array consisting of 96 electrodes in the visual cortex of a 57-year-old person with complete blindness for a 6-month period. We measured thresholds and the characteristics of the visual percepts elicited by intracortical microstimulation.RESULTSImplantation and subsequent explantation of intracortical mic

INTRODUCTION: The position between the cochlea implant (CI) electrode array and the neural structures is crucial for the audiological outcome in CI surgery. Using the pullback technique, an electrode position closer to the modiolus can be achieved in perimodiolar electrode arrays. An approximation to the modiolus could be demonstrated by improved electrophysiological recordings after finalizing the pullback.
METHODS: Forty-six patients were implanted with Nucleus Slim perimodiolar electrode arrays (Cochlear Pty, Sydney). After complete insertion of the electrode, a controlled pullback by abou

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Most severe complications of DBS appear in the perioperative period. There are no published case reports of delayed ICH occurring more than three months from electrode implantation. The pathogenesis of delayed ICH remains unclear.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a 64-year-old male with essential tremor who sustained a delayed intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) 2.5 years after implantation of a deep brain stimulating electrode.
DISCUSSION: The patient sustained a thalamic-midbrain ICH that may have been related to the positioning of the electrode. An analysis was perfor

In cochlear implants, the electrode insertion trauma during surgery can cause damage residual hearing. Preserving the residual hearing is an important challenge and the localized administration of drugs, such as steroids, is one of the most promising ways, but remains a challenge. Here, a microscaffold cochlear electrode array (MiSCEA) consisting of a microfabricated flexible electrode array and a 3D microscaffold for steroid reservoir is reported. The MiSCEA without loaded drug is tested by measuring the electrically evoked auditory brainstem response of the cochlea in guinea pigs (n = 4). Th
