Dwarf versus tall elephant grass in sheep feed: which one is the most recommended for cut-and-carry?

Tall- and dwarf-sized elephant grass cultivars have been developed for cut-and-carry system. Dwarf clones have better digestibility; on the other hand, tall-sized cultivars are more productive. The aim was to verify which grass would be most recommended for cut-and-carry: tall-sized (Elephant B and IRI-381) or dwarf (Taiwan A-146 2.37 and Mott) elephant grass cultivars to feed 24 male sheep, aged between 4 and 5 months, uncastrated, weighing approximately 24.08 ± 1.76 kg body weight which were sampled on intake, digestibility, performance, ingestive behavior, nitrogen balance, microbial protei

Conditions influencing the appearance of thermal windows and the distribution of surface temperature in hauled-out southern elephant seals.

Pinnipeds (true seals, sea lions and walruses) inhabit two thermally different environments, air and water, so need to make continuous adjustments to maintain a balanced body temperature. The thermal isolation properties of thick blubber keep warmth within the body's core, ideal for mammals while in the water; however, when on land, this thick blubber makes it difficult to lose heat. Some pinnipeds use thermal windows, discrete patches where temperature changes on their body surface, as a mechanism to dissipate excessive heat. We identify the factors that correlate with the appearance of therm

Modified "in situ" arch replacement with an integrative frozen elephant trunk device for acute type A aortic dissection.

BACKGROUND: Total arch replacement (TAR) and frozen elephant trunk (FET) has been proposed as the primary arch repair method for acute type A aortic dissection (aTAAD). We introduce a modified "in situ" arch replacement with an integrative FET device for aTAAD. METHODS: From January 2018 to December 2019, 507 aTAAD patients from Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital received surgical therapy; among them, 57 patients with modified island total arch replacement (MiTAR) and 138 patients with TAR were enrolled. Marfan syndrome, primary intimal tears located in the large curve of aortic arch +/- or supra-ar

A 23-year experience with the reversed elephant trunk technique for staged repair of extensive thoracic aortic aneurysm.

OBJECTIVE: The reversed elephant trunk technique permits staged repair of extensive thoracic aortic aneurysm in patients whose distal (ie, descending thoracic and thoracoabdominal) aorta is symptomatic or disproportionately large compared with their proximal aorta (ie, ascending aorta and transverse aortic arch). We present our 23-year experience with the reversed elephant trunk approach. METHODS: Between 1994 and 2017, 94 patients (median age 62 [46-69] years) underwent stage 1 reversed elephant trunk repair of the distal aorta. Fifty-three patients (56%) had aortic dissection, and 31 patien

Open stented elephant trunk for complicated Stanford type B aortic dissection: a single-center experience.

BACKGROUND: Open stented elephant trunk (SET) or SET with left subclavian artery (LSCA) to left common carotid artery (LCCA) bypass is proven to a potentially alternative treatment for complicated Stanford type B aortic dissection (TBAD). In the current study, we reported our experience with ten consecutive TBAD patients who underwent open SET. METHODS: Patients with complicated TBAD underwent open SET from May 2016 to November 2018 in our institution were included. Patients' clinical data were obtained from the electronic medical record system, and long-term clinical outcomes were collected

Overlooking the transition elephant in the ultra-high-risk room: are we missing functional equivalents of transition to psychosis?

In the wake of the almost quarter of a century since the conceptualization of ultra-high-risk (UHR) states for psychosis, empirical evidences in the field are constantly scrutinized and re-assessed through meta-analytic lens. Briefly, such scrutiny converges on three major evidences: pretest risk enrichment, risk hierarchy within UHR states, and declining transition rates. While the former two are intuitive, the dilution effect remains elusive and might be rather symptomatic of unsolved issues in the field. Those include the heterogeneously reported antipsychotic (AP) exposure in UHR samples a

Neurologic complications after the frozen elephant trunk procedure: A meta-analysis of more than 3000 patients.

OBJECTIVE: The frozen elephant trunk technique's safety regarding spinal cord ischemia has been questioned. We used a meta-analysis to determine the rates of adverse neurologic events and mortality. METHODS: We searched PubMed/Medline, Embase, Scopus, and Cochrane databases (inception to April 2018) to identify studies of neurologic events after the frozen elephant trunk procedure. Separate meta-analyses were conducted with random-effects models to assess frozen elephant trunk associations with spinal cord ischemia, stroke, operative mortality, and all adverse events combined. Frozen Elephant Trunk for Acute Type B Dissection Involving the Distal Arch in the Hybrid Repair Era.

BACKGROUND: Hybrid repair of complicated acute type B aortic dissection (ATBAD) with aortic arch involvement is associated with a high rate of endoleak, stroke, and retrograde aortic dissection. Optimal management of this lesion remains uncertain. In this hybrid repair era, surgical results of ATBAD with distal aortic arch involvement using a frozen elephant trunk procedure with transposition of the left subclavian artery (LSCA) to left common carotid artery (LCCA) is reported. METHODS: From April 2011 to April 2016, 53 patients with complicated ATBAD with distal aortic arch involvement under

ACUTE-PHASE RESPONSES IN HEALTHY, MALNOURISHED, AND OTOSTRONGYLUS-INFECTED JUVENILE NORTHERN ELEPHANT SEALS (MIROUNGA ANGUSTIROSTRIS).

Acute-phase proteins (APPs) are utilized to detect early inflammation in many domestic and nondomestic species, but variability exists between species and inflammatory diseases as to which APPs are most useful. Stranded juvenile northern elephant seals (NESs; Mirounga angustirostris) undergoing rehabilitation at the Marine Mammal Center experience high mortality rates due to severe arteritis caused by the lungworm, Otostrongylus circumlitis (OC), and there are currently no effective antemortem diagnostic tools for this disease. To characterize patterns of the acute-phase response in the NES, t

Effects of daily management changes on behavioral patterns of a solitary female African elephant (Loxodonta africana) in a zoo.

This study investigated the effects of changes in daily management on behavior of a solitary female elephant in a zoo. The activity budget and space utilization of the subject and the management changes were recorded for 1 year after the conspecific male died. The observation days could be categorized into five clusters (C1-C5) by the characteristic behavioral pattern of each day. C1 had the highest percentage of resting of all clusters, and was observed after the loss of the conspecific and the beginning of use of the indoor exhibition room at night. C2, which had the highest percentage of st

One-stage total thoracic aortic repair for mega-aorta using frozen elephant trunk technique.

We report the case of a 71-year-old female with mega-aorta extending from the ascending aorta to the descending aorta, who was successfully treated with a one-stage total thoracic aortic repair by the frozen elephant trunk technique using a stent-graft. We used a home-made frozen elephant trunk with four giant-turco Z-stents on the distal side that was inserted into the downstream descending aorta via an aortic arch guiding pull-through wire. The stent-graft was distally positioned at the level of the 12th thoracic vertebra after total arch replacement had been performed using a four-branch gr
