Assessing the threat of Bacillus cereus: From toxin characterization to modern detection strategies.

Bacillus cereus is a spore-forming pathogen responsible for both diarrheal and emetic foodborne illnesses worldwide. Its significance in food safety has received growing attention. Recent advances, including the discovery of novel virulence factors and the development of emerging detection technologies, have provided new insights into its pathogenic mechanisms and surveillance strategies. This review critically examines the global burden of B. cereus infections, and molecular mechanisms of its major virulence factors, and the performance characteristics of current detection knowledge gaps such

Vomiting induction by ipecac syrup in dogs and ferrets.

The dog has been used as an experimental animal in emesis research. In this study, we analyzed the emetic effects of ipecac syrup using a smaller animal, the ferret, and compared its response to that of the dog. Dogs and ferrets were divided into 4 groups (n = 4, each). Each group was given either 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, or 1.0 ml/kg of ipecac syrup, and the latency and numbers of retching and vomiting were recorded. Animals given an equal volume of saline served as controls. The numbers of vomiting and retching increased dose-dependently in both dogs and ferrets, and there was no difference in latenc

Selective blockade of cytotoxic drug-induced emesis by 5-HT3 receptor antagonists in Suncus murinus.

Antiemetic effects of serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonists (ICS205-930, zacopride, BRL43694, GR38032F) were investigated in Suncus murinus. Veratrine, nicotine, copper sulfate, cisplatin, cyclophosphamide and motion sickness were used as emetic stimuli. Serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonists did not inhibit emetic responses to veratrine, nicotine, copper sulfate and motion sickness. However, cisplatin- and cyclophosphamide-induced emesis was strongly blocked by them. Both subcutaneous and intravenous injections of 5-HT3 antagonists were effective. Serotonin 5-HT1 and 5-HT2 receptor antagonists w

Apomorphine-induced emesis in the dog--routes of administration, efficacy and synergism by naloxone.

Apomorphine proved to be more effective as an emetic in dogs after s.c. administration than after i.m. injection with doses of 0.04 and 0.1 mg/kg. This effect is explained by an anti-emetic effect mediated by mu-receptors in the vomiting centre in the brain, which, in contrast to the chemoreceptor trigger zone, is within the blood-brain barrier. A certain delay between the stimulation of D2-receptors in the chemoreceptor trigger zone (causing emesis) and mu-receptors in the vomiting centre (producing anti-emesis) therefore results, leading to a self-limiting emesis. Blockade of the mu-receptor

Sensory signals for nausea.

Nausea serves as a protective response against harmful ingested stimuli but can also be experienced as a discomforting aspect of various conditions. Recent insights have emerged regarding neural pathways and molecular mechanisms linked to this sensation. This often involves complex interactions of interoceptive neural pathways with the digestive, endocrine, and immune systems. This review summarizes recent findings using non-emetic (e.g., rodents) and emetic (e.g., ferrets, shrews, dogs) mammalian models to explore the molecular mechanisms of nausea, particularly in understudied malaise states

Methotrexate-induced nausea in the treatment of juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Methotrexate is the most commonly used disease modifying antirheumatic drug in the treatment of juvenile idiopathic arthritis an … thers. Anticipatory nausea can be difficult to treat, making primary prevention of nausea with anti-emetics an attractive approach. CONCLUSION: Understanding the prevalence and impact of methotrexate-induced nausea, as well as potentially effective interventions, may help maximize the therapeutic benefits of methotrexate.

A pilot study of the use of progressive muscle relaxation training in the management of post-chemotherapy nausea and vomiting.

The aim of this pilot study was to assess the effectiveness of using progressive muscle relaxation training (PMRT) in the management of chemotherapy-related nausea and vomiting in Chinese breast cancer patients receiving doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide as well as feasibility issues for a larger study. Eight patients were randomly assigned to receive either oral anti-emetics as per hospital protocol (maxolon) or adjuvant PMRT. Both groups, however, received intravenous anti-emetics half an hour before the chemotherapy administration. PMRT was given by a trained nurse once a day for 5 days. A r…

Gastrointestinal pharmacology.

Treatment of diseases affecting the gastrointestinal tract often focuses on resolution of clinical pharmacology of drugs used to treat the gastrointestinal tract, starting with appetite stimulants, followed by emetics and antiemetics, and antidiarrheals. Prokinetic agents and drugs used for the treatment of gastroduodenal ulceration are also discussed. Discussions include mechanisms of drug action, disposition of drugs as it relates to therapeutic use, drug interactions, adverse drug reactions, and clinical indications.

Recovery of retching after lesions involving the nucleus of the solitary tract.

The nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) in the caudal brainstem receives various inputs that trigger vomiting. Chemical (kainic acid) NTS lesions in decerebrate, paralyzed cats temporarily suppressed fictive vomiting induced by different emetics. Subsequently, retching but not expulsion, resumed in 2-3.5 h. Since the NTS does not appear essential for retching, antiemetic drugs targeted at the NTS may not completely suppress vomiting.

Managing chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting.

1. Nausea and vomiting can further debilitate patients in whom physical and psychological status is already compromised, and may seriously diminish their quality of life. 2. A number of nursing, psychological and pharmacological measures can be employed to reduce these side-effects. 3. While conventional anti-emetics have afforded some control of emesis, the 5-HT3 antagonists have proved to be effective and well-tolerated agents.

Preventive effects of naldemedine, peripherally acting μ-opioid receptor antagonist, on morphine-induced nausea and vomiting in ferrets.

AIMS: Naldemedine is a peripherally acting μ-opioid receptor antagonists (PAMORAs) indicated for the treatment of opioid-induced constipation (OIC). We investigated the preventive effect of naldemedine on morphine-induced nausea and vomiting in ferrets and conducted a pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) analysis. MAIN METHODS: The antiemetic effect of naldemedine was evaluated as the frequency and time of retching (rhythmic abdominal contractile motion) and vomiting (throwing up vomit or similar reactions) caused by morphine in ferrets. After a single oral administration of naldemedine to

Food poisoning and Staphylococcus aureus enterotoxins.

Staphylococcus aureus produces a wide variety of toxins including staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs; SEA to SEE, SEG to SEI, SER to SET) with demonstrated emetic activity, and staphylococcal-like (SEl) proteins, which are not emetic in a primate model (SElL and SElQ) or have yet to be tested (SElJ, SElK, SElM to SElP, SElU, SElU2 and SElV). SEs and SEls have been traditionally subdivided into classical (SEA to SEE) and new (SEG to SElU2) types. All possess superantigenic activity and are encoded by accessory genetic elements, including plasmids, prophages, pathogenicity islands, vSa genomic isl

Evolution of pathogenicity in the Bacillus cereus group.

The Bacillus cereus group of bacteria comprises soil-dwelling saprophytes but on occasion these bacteria can cause a wide range of diseases in humans, including food poisoning, systemic infections and highly lethal forms of anthrax. While anthrax is almost invariably caused by strains from a single evolutionary lineage, Bacillus anthracis, variation in the virulence properties of strains from other lineages has not been fully addressed. Using multi-locus sequence data from 667 strains, we reconstructed the evolutionary history of the B. cereus group in terms of both clonal inheritance and reco
