Effects of intelligence level and place of residence on the ability of individuals with mental retardation to identify facial expressions.

This study was designed to investigate the abilities of individuals with mental retardation to recognize and match emotional facial expressions from a series of photographs depicting various facial expressions. There were four groups of participants according to their place of residence (community or institution) and their intelligence level (mild or moderate). Each individual participated in two tasks: (1) recognizing a facial expression from an array of three pictures presented, and (2) matching a facial expression from one picture with a picture depicting a similar emotion from an array of

"(I Think) My Mother Thinks I Am, Therefore I Am." The Looking-glass Self in Maltreated Children and Adolescents.

Children and adolescents with maltreatment experiences show worse representations of themselves, as compared to their nonmaltreated counterparts. According to the looking-glass self hypothesis (LGSH), individuals' self-representations (SR) stem from interactions with significant others, reflecting associations between what significant others think of them (i.e., actual appraisals), individuals' perceptions of significant others' appraisals of them (i.e., reflected appraisals), and SR. However, little is known about the looking-glass self process in maltreated children and adolescents. This mul

Monitoring students' well-being through journal analysis-study protocol of an explorative approach using natural language processing on typed and transcribed entries to monitor and generate personalized feedback.

BACKGROUND: More than one-third of German students report high emotional exhaustion. One effective and low-cost method for improving emotional well-being is journaling, and advances in artificial intelligence (AI), particularly in Natural Language Processing (NLP), enable automated analysis of journal content for mental health monitoring. These analyses can be returned to users as personalized feedback, thereby enhancing the positive effects of journaling through increased self-reflection and creating an incentive for continuous use, which, in turn, improves monitoring. Journaling apps offer v

A multi-stage ensemble framework for classifying pig vocalizations under noisy animal farm environments.

Pig vocalizations are important indicators of health and emotional state, offering significant potential for advancing precision livestock farming. Accurate recognition of these vocalization patterns requires robust noise filtering and effective feature extraction. However, existing studies often focus on isolated patterns such as coughs, limiting their practical applicability in real-world settings. This study introduces the Pig Vocalization Multi-stage Classification (PVMC) model, a comprehensive framework designed to detect and classify a wide range of pig vocalizations under diverse farm c

Childhood maltreatment is associated with an automatic negative emotion processing bias in the amygdala.

UNLABELLED: Major depression has been repeatedly associated with amygdala hyper-responsiveness to negative (but not positive) facial expressions at early, automatic stages of emotion processing using subliminally presented stimuli. However, it is not clear whether this "limbic bias" is a correlate of depression or represents a vulnerability marker preceding the onset of the disease. Because childhood maltreatment is a potent risk factor for the development of major depression in later life, we explored whether childhood maltreatment is associated with amygdalar emotion processing bias in maltr

Development of Amygdala Functional Connectivity During Infancy and Its Relationship With 4-Year Behavioral Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: The amygdala represents a core node in the human brain's emotional signal processing circuitry. Given its critical role, both the typical and atypical functional connectivity patterns of the amygdala have been extensively studied in adults. However, the development of amygdala functional connectivity during infancy is less well studied; thus, our understanding of the normal growth trajectory of key emotion-related brain circuits during a critical period is limited. METHODS: In this study, we used resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (N = 233 subjects with 334 datase

Depressive rumination and the emotional control circuit: An EEG localization and effective connectivity study.

Ruminations are repetitive thoughts associated with symptoms, causes, and consequences of one's negative feelings. The objective of this study was to explore the neuronal basis of depressive rumination in a non-clinical population within the context of emotional control. Participants scoring high or low on the tendency to ruminate scale took part in the EEG experiment. Their EEG data were collected during a state of induced depressive ruminations and compared with positive and neutral conditions. We hypothesized that both groups would differ according to the level of activation and effective c

Evidence for shared deficits in identifying emotions from faces and from voices in autism spectrum disorders and specific language impairment.

BACKGROUND: While autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and specific language impairment (SLI) have traditionally been conceptualized as distinct disorders, recent findings indicate that the boundaries between these two conditions are not clear-cut. While considerable research has investigated overlap in the linguistic characteristics of ASD and SLI, relatively less research has explored possible overlap in the socio-cognitive domain, particularly in terms of the emotion recognition abilities of these two groups of children. AIMS: To investigate facial and vocal emotion recognition in children with

Impact of physical maltreatment on the regulation of negative affect and aggression.

Physically maltreated children are at risk for developing externalizing behavioral problems characterized by reactive aggression. The current experiment tested the relationships between individual differences in a neural index of social information processing, histories of child maltreatment, child negative affect, and aggressive behavior. Fifty boys (17 maltreated) performed an emotion recognition task while the P3b component of the event-related potential was recorded to index attention allocation to angry faces. Children then participated in a peer-directed aggression task. Negative affect

Real-time support vector classification and feedback of multiple emotional brain states.

An important question that confronts current research in affective neuroscience as well as in the treatment of emotional disorders is whether it is possible to determine the emotional state of a person based on the measurement of brain activity alone. Here, we first show that an online support vector machine (SVM) can be built to recognize two discrete emotional states, such as happiness and disgust from fMRI signals, in healthy individuals instructed to recall emotionally salient episodes from their lives. We report the first application of real-time head motion correction, spatial smoothing

Emotion specificity in mental retardation.

The emotion-specificity hypothesis states that mental retardation is associated with deficits in decoding facially expressed emotions that cannot be fully accounted for by MA. Research has demonstrated repeatedly that subjects with mental retardation do not perform as well on emotion recognition tasks as do control subjects but not whether those performance deficits are specific to affective cues. The emotion-specificity hypothesis was tested further with three groups of 16 subjects: adults with mild to moderate mental retardation, similar age adults without mental retardation, and children wi

The Impact of Expressive Arts Therapy on Alexithymia Levels in Adolescent Inpatients with Severe Anorexia Nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a complex psychiatric disorder that requires a multidisciplinary approach. The World Health Organization recognizes the therapeutic value of expressive arts, including drama, in enhancing emotional, cognitive, and relational domains in severe mental illnesses such as AN. Expressive arts interventions may improve emotional intelligence, empathy, and self-awareness while reducing anxiety and alexithymia. This study evaluated the impact of an adjunctive expressive arts program on alexithymia in pediatric inpatients with AN. METHODS: We enrolled patients aged …

What Is in There for Artificial Intelligence to Support Mental Health Care for Persons with Serious Mental Illness? Opportunities and Challenges.

Artificial intelligence (AI) holds potential to support persons with serious mental illness, but evidence remains limited. To explore opportunities and challenges there, we conducted qualitative interviews with multiple Norwegian mental health stakeholders. Data was analyzed using thematic analysis and sentiment analysis. Twenty-two informants shared their opinions, with half expressing moderately negative sentiments. Findings suggest AI can optimize mental health service delivery and encourage a flexible approach to recovery. However, AI's ability to provide emotional support may inadvertentl

Abnormalities in neural processing of emotional stimuli in Williams syndrome vary according to social vs. non-social content.

Williams syndrome (WS) is a rare genetic disorder caused by the deletion of approximately 25 genes on chromosome 7q11.23 and is characterized by both hypersociability and increases in specific phobia and anticipatory anxiety regarding non-social entities or circumstances. Alterations in amygdala reactivity and prefrontal regulation consistent with the observed behavioral pattern of social versus non-social abnormalities have been previously demonstrated in individuals with WS (Meyer-Lindenberg et al., 2005). However, in that study, the social stimulus (faces) matching task was more difficult t
