BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Refugees experience a myriad of stressors, with social stressors having particularly adverse effects on mental health. This study examined interpersonal emotion regulation (ER), whereby individuals draw on social support to regulate their own emotions, as a potential mechanism underlying this effect.
DESIGN: A sample of 561 refugees in Australia completed a survey assessing exposure to potentially traumatic events (PTEs), social and practical post-migration stressors, interpersonal ER, and posttraumatic stress, depression, and anger symptoms.
METHODS: A confirmator

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive disengagement syndrome (CDS) is associated with internalizing symptoms, emotion regulation (ER) difficulties, daytime sleepiness, and impulsivity; however, their interrelations in adolescents with subthreshold attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) remain underexamined. This study aimed to evaluate the relationships between CDS, ADHD symptoms, ER problems, daytime sleepiness, trait impulsivity, and internalizing symptoms and to determine the mediating roles of ER problems and daytime sleepiness.
METHODS: This cross-sectional, clinic-based study included 144 treat

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive dysfunction and emotional symptoms frequently co-occur in Parkinson's disease (PD), yet the processes linking these domains remain unclear. One proposed pathway involves differences in emotion regulation (ER) strategy use, which may vary as a function of cognitive functioning.
METHODS: This study examined whether task-based executive functioning (EF) and self-reported functional cognitive impairment (FCI) are associated with anxiety, depression, and mental wellbeing in PD, and whether these relationships are moderated by ER strategies. One hundred and three individuals

Workplace stress is closely related to employes' mental health and work functioning, but most research has examined emotional labor, emotion regulation difficulties, and psychological resources as separate variables. This study addressed this limitation by using a person-centered approach to identify how emotion regulation burdens and resources are configured within employees and how these configurations relate to mental health and work outcomes. A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted with 1,552 Chinese employees who attended workplace mental health and emotion management seminar

BACKGROUND: Harsh discipline (HD) remains common across cultural contexts and is often transmitted intergenerationally. However, the mechanisms underlying this continuity remain underexplored in non-Western contexts.
OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether parents' recollections of maternal and paternal HD predict HD with their children, and whether emotion regulation difficulties mediate these associations.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The sample included 467 Egyptian parents aged 23-62 years (M = 37.76, SD = 5.78), and each reported on one child aged 2 to 12.4 years (M = 7.73, SD = 2.95).

Romantic partners' emotions are interdependent, yet it remains unclear whether their emotion regulation behaviors also influence each other over time. This study investigated bidirectional associations between intrinsic emotion regulation (regulating one's own emotions) and extrinsic emotion regulation (regulating a partner's emotions) in 387 heterosexual couples assessed across seven waves over 2 years from August 2021 to August 2023 (1,699 observations). At each wave, both partners reported their use of six pairs of intrinsic-extrinsic strategies: expressive suppression, humor, reappraisal,

Current research indicates that medical staff frequently experience potentially morally injurious events, leading to moral injury (MI), which is associated with adverse physical and mental health as well as occupational burnout. Using the conceptual model of MI, this study investigated the symptom-level connections between distinct emotion regulation (ER) strategies—cognitive reappraisal (CR) and expressive suppression (ES)—and MI symptoms among medical staff. Using network analysis, we assessed ER capacities and MI symptoms in a sample of 1,001 medical staff. An ER-MI network was constructed

While previous studies have demonstrated significant associations between partners' emotion regulation (ER) and overall well-being, very few studies provide knowledge on ER in clinical couples, especially across couple therapy sessions. The sample consisted of 174 mixed-sex couples, predominantly white and from the western region of the United States, who attended at least the initial eight sessions of couple therapy. The current study examined the intra- and inter-personal effects of ER difficulties (i.e., lack of awareness, nonacceptance, limited strategies, and impulsivity) on the trajector

The present research utilised the new Process of Emotion Regulation Measure (PERM) to assess emotion regulation motives, selected strategies, and perceived efficacies in a longitudinal community sample of 951 adolescents. We conducted Latent Profile Analyses (LPA) to identify distinct emotion regulation styles and random intercept-latent transition analysis (RI-LTA) to reveal rates of stability and change of profile membership over time. Both LPA and RI-LTA suggested the optimal profile solution was constituted by five emotion regulation profiles: hypo-regulating, hyper-regulating, adaptive, m

BACKGROUND: Emotion regulation (ER) plays a crucial role in adolescent mental health, yet its complexity is often overlooked. ER involves the use of multiple strategies, and individuals frequently combine several strategies to manage their emotions. To better capture this complexity, person-centred approaches have increasingly been used to identify ER strategy profiles. However, research on ER profiles among adolescents remains limited. The present study therefore adopted a person-centred approach to identify ER strategy profiles in adolescents and examine their associations with mental health

When confronted with negative events, regulating emotions is essential for self-management and mental health. Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients, particularly right TLE (rTLE) patients, show altered responses towards emotional stimuli. However, neural correlates of emotion regulation and its interplay with stimulus-based emotion processing have not been studied in TLE so far. Therefore, we compared functional MRI activity during up- and downregulation of emotions towards negative scenes among 21 left TLE and 18 rTLE patients, 18 frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) patients and 17 healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: Digital mental health interventions can improve distress and well-being, but the processes statistically accounting for these effects remain unclear. We examined emotion regulation and insomnia as candidate processes in university students.
METHODS: Data came from a three-arm randomized trial of the ETUCARE program, an eight-week multicomponent program for French university students. The ITT dataset contained 1064 participants (online: n = 460; hybrid: n = 235; control: n = 369); 947 contributed to FIML estimation. Parallel mediation estimated indirect effects through emotion regu

Emotion regulation is essential for adaptive behavior and mental health. Dominant theoretical frameworks, together with influential neuroscientific accounts, suggest that emotion regulation is closely linked to cognitive control processes; however, behavioral evidence supporting this link remains inconsistent. To quantify these associations, a comprehensive meta-analysis was conducted to examine the relationship between individual differences in cognitive control (updating, inhibition, shifting) and four emotion regulation strategies: reappraisal (k = 70 studies, N = 10,524), suppression (k =

BACKGROUND: Patients with hereditary angioedema (HAE) exhibit emotional distress and a deteriorated quality of life. Emotional distress is associated with impaired emotional regulation, including alexithymia, which is characterized by difficulties in recognizing and expressing emotions. Our study assessed the presence of alexithymia in patients with HAE to determine whether patients with this disease experience difficulties and specific learning in emotion regulation. Thirty-nine adult patients with HAE answered a self-report questionnaire measuring: 1) alexithymia (Toronto Alexithymia Scale-2…

BACKGROUND: Emotion regulation relies on the interplay between prefrontal and limbic brain regions, with prefrontal regions implicated in the top-down modulation of the amygdala. In social anxiety disorder, disruptions in these networks have been reported, but most studies used undirected functional connectivity.
AIMS: Dynamic causal modelling (DCM) was used to assess effective (i.e. directed) connectivity differences during emotion processing and regulation in individuals with social anxiety disorder compared with healthy controls.
METHOD: A total of 102 participants (61 with social anxiety

Emotion regulation (ER) difficulties in early childhood are considered potential predictors of later psychopathology, particularly in children of mothers with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). This multicenter study examined ER in German-speaking children of mothers with BPD (C-BPD), children of mothers with anxiety/ depressive disorders, and children of mentally healthy mothers (N = 318; Mage = 39.41 months, SD = 22.16; range: 6-84 months, 53.5% female). We hypothesized that C-BPD would display more unfavorable (maladaptive) ER strategies than the other groups. ER was assessed via behavi

Psychiatric disorders are among the leading contributors to the global burden of disease. Impaired emotion regulation has been hypothesized to be a transdiagnostic feature of psychiatric disorders, but this has not been proven across all classes of psychopathology. We sought to systematically review and meta-analyze emotion regulation impairment across major psychiatric disorders to determine if impairment is truly transdiagnostic. Selected studies compared healthy controls and individuals with a psychiatric disorder. Emotion regulation was assessed by the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Sc

Parent-adolescent perceptual (in)congruence in relationship has important implications for adolescent emotion regulation, yet little is known about how congruence and discrepancies in perceived closeness and conflict relate to cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression. To address this gap, the present study examined these associations across early, middle, and late adolescence. Data were drawn from 1,875 Chinese parent-adolescent dyads (adolescents: Mage = 13.06, SDage = 2.78, 50% female; parents: Mage = 40.23, SDage = 5.32, 76.5% mothers). As a tactic to regulate emotions, distancing involves changing perspectives to alter the psychological distance from stimuli that elicit emotional reactions. Using magnetic resonance spectroscopy and functional magnetic resonance imaging, this study aimed to examine (i) whether the neural correlates of emotion upregulation via distancing differ across emotional valence (i.e. emotional responses toward positive and negative pictures), and (ii) whether the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) concentration in the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC), one of the crucial areas of emotion regulation, is corre
