[Exploration on Electroencephalogram Mechanism Differences of Negative Emotions Induced by Disgusted and Sad Situation Images].

Evolutionary psychology holds such an opinion that negative situation may threaten survival, trigger avoidance motive and have poor effects on the human-body function and the psychological quality. Both disgusted and sad situations can induce negative emotions. However, differences between the two situations on attention capture and emotion cognition during the emotion induction are still not well known. Typical disgusted and sad situation images were used in the present study to induce two negative emotions, and 15 young students (7 males and 8 females, aged 27 ± 3) were recruited in the expe…

The association between emotions and eating behaviour in an obese population with binge eating disorder.

There is utility in understanding the antecedents of binge eating (BE), with a view to explaining poorer weight loss treatment responses in this subgroup. A systematic review was completed according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines with the aim of exploring associations between emotions and eating behaviour in a population affected by obesity and binge eating disorder (BED). A comprehensive literature search of four electronic databases (2004-2014) yielded 15 studies for inclusion. Included studies performed poorly on data quality analys…

Vagal activity is quadratically related to prosocial traits, prosocial emotions, and observer perceptions of prosociality.

In the present article, we introduce the quadratic vagal activity-prosociality hypothesis, a theoretical framework for understanding the vagus nerve's involvement in prosociality. We argue that vagus nerve activity supports prosocial behavior by regulating physiological systems that enable emotional expression, empathy for others' mental and emotional states, the regulation of one's own distress, and the experience of positive emotions. However, we contend that extremely high levels of vagal activity can be detrimental to prosociality. We present 3 studies providing support for our model, find…

Can gaze avoidance explain why individuals with Asperger's syndrome can't recognise emotions from facial expressions?

Research has shown that individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) have difficulties recognising emotions from facial expressions. Since eye contact is important for accurate emotion recognition, and individuals with ASD tend to avoid eye contact, this tendency for gaze aversion has been proposed as an explanation for the emotion recognition deficit. This explanation was investigated using a newly developed emotion and mental state recognition task. Individuals with Asperger's Syndrome were less accurate at recognising emotions and mental states, but did not show evidence of gaze avoidan…

The impact of early powered mobility on parental stress, negative emotions, and family social interactions.

Powered mobility has been found to have positive effects on young children with severe physical disabilities, but the impact on the family has been less well documented. We evaluated the impact of early powered mobility on parental stress, negative emotions, perceived social interactions, and parental satisfaction with wheelchair characteristics such as size and durability. The participants were parents of 23 children with disabilities-10 with orthopedic disabilities (average age 30.1 months) and 13 with cerebral palsy (average age 47.0 months). Pretest assessments were completed two times: at…

Control of negative emotions and its implication for illness perception among psoriasis and vitiligo patients.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the study was to determine the intensity of control over negative emotions of anger, depressed mood, and anxiety in certain skin diseases such as psoriasis and vitiligo, and to define the predictors of this emotional control in terms of the illness perception in the following context: duration of illness, age at onset, subjective knowledge of the causes of illness, subjective sense of control over the disease. METHODS: The study included 60 patients with psoriasis (n = 30) and vitiligo (n = 30) as well as healthy persons (n = 60) matched to the experimental group in…

Information processing during sleep: the effect of olfactory stimuli on dream content and dream emotions.

Research has shown that external stimuli presented during sleep can affect dream content, thus reflecting information processing of the sleeping brain. Olfactory stimuli should have a stronger effect on dream emotions because their processing is linked directly to the limbic system. Because selective olfactory stimulation does not increase arousal activity, intense olfactory stimulation is therefore a prime paradigm for studying information processing during sleep. Fifteen healthy, normosmic volunteers were studied by intranasal chemosensory stimulation during rapid eye movement sleep based on…

Coping with emotions past: the neural bases of regulating affect associated with negative autobiographical memories.

BACKGROUND: Although the ability to adaptively reflect on negative autobiographical experiences without ruminating is critical to mental health, to our knowledge no research has directly examined the neural systems underlying this process. METHODS: Sixteen participants were scanned using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) as they focused on negative autobiographical memories using cognitive strategies designed to facilitate (feel strategy) versus undermine (analyze and accept strategies) rumination. RESULTS: Two key findings were obtained. First, consistent with prior emotion regul

Recognition of facial emotions among maltreated children with high rates of post-traumatic stress disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to examine processing of facial emotions in a sample of maltreated children showing high rates of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Maltreatment during childhood has been associated independently with both atypical processing of emotion and the development of PTSD. However, research has provided little evidence indicating how high rates of PTSD might relate to maltreated children's processing of emotions. METHOD: Participants' reaction time and labeling of emotions were measured using a morphed facial emotion identification task. Participants inclu…

Reading others emotions: The role of intuitive judgments in predicting marital satisfaction, quality, and stability.

This study examined links between emotion expression in couple interactions and marital quality and stability. Core aspects of emotion expression in marital interactions were identified with the use of naive observational coding by multiple raters. Judges rated 47 marital discussions with 15 emotion descriptors. Coders' pooled ratings yielded good reliability on 4 types of emotion expression: hostility, distress, empathy, and affection. These 4 types were linked with concurrent marital satisfaction and interviewer ratings of marital adjustment as well as with marital stability at a 5-year foll

The impact of negative emotions on prognosis following myocardial infarction: is it more than depression?

This study examine the importance of major depression symptoms, history of major depression, anxiety, anger-in, anger-out, and perceived social support, measured in the hospital after a myocardial infarction (MI), in predicting cardiac events over the subsequent 12 months in a sample of 222 patients. Cardiac events included both recurrences of acute coronary syndromes (unstable angina admissions and survived and nonsurvived MI recurrences) and probable arrhythmic events (survived cardiac arrests and arrhythmic deaths). Major depression, depressive symptoms, anxiety, and history of major depres

Investigating perspectives and emotions on climate change among children and adolescents in San Cristóbal, Galápagos.

An estimated one billion children live at extremely high risk of adverse effects from climate change. Even when children are not exposed to direct physical impacts, the existential threat of climate change can have a psychological impact by creating a stressor that exacerbates underlying mental health disorders or contributes to the development of new disorders. Children and adolescents worldwide are experiencing high rates of fear and worry related to climate change, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Despite this disparate impact, most studies on this topic have been conducted

When fitness testing becomes personal: achievement emotions and participation orientations in compulsory university physical education.

Fitness testing can support learning when pedagogically embedded, but public, graded enactment can expose students' bodies to comparison and judgement. Prior research documents negative experiences but does not explain why similar instances of low performance are interpreted as repairable, personally diminishing, or procedurally unfair. Guided by control-value theory and informed by attribution and self-conscious emotion research, this cross-sectional qualitative critical-incident study examined accounts from 30 undergraduates at three public universities in one western Chinese city. Pre-diagnosis emotions and experiences of parents of children with immunodeficiency disorders: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Parents of children with immunodeficiency disorders may experience emotional difficulties prior to diagnosis. For this reason, the present study aims to examine the pre-diagnosis emotions and experiences of parents of children with immunodeficiency disorders by using a phenomenological approach. METHODS: This qualitative study employed a descriptive phenomenological design. The study was conducted between January and April 2026 with parents of children receiving treatment for immunodeficiency disorders at the Pediatric Day Treatment Unit of a university hospital. Nineteen parents …

Beliefs about animal emotions are associated with self-reported consumer behaviors related to animal use.

Human-held beliefs about the emotional capacity and experience of non-human animals appear to be related to attitudes concerning animal use, but direct links between such beliefs and consumer behaviors that affect animals have not been investigated. Two survey-based studies were conducted to test whether scores on the Beliefs about Animal Emotions Scale (BAES) are associated with self-reported consumer behaviors. In Study 1, beliefs about animal emotions statistically predicted reported frequency of non-dietary animal use avoidances (e.g., avoiding animal-tested products, animal-based competit…

The expression of self-conscious emotions and their motivational and communicative function in early development.

Self-conscious emotions, such as embarrassment, guilt, shame and pride, play a central role in managing reputation and interpersonal relationships. They are thought to emerge in the first years of life, with children's developing cognitive capacities and their growing appreciation of social norms and rules. Recent years have seen a rapid increase in research on self-conscious emotions in early life, supported by advanced methods including manual and automated micro-coding of non-verbal behaviour, depth sensor imaging and physiological measures. In this narrative review, we summarize this emerg…

Beliefs about negative emotions and emotional eating: the role of rumination and body mass index.

BACKGROUND: Emotion beliefs are cognitive processes that influence how emotions are regulated, with important implications for well-being. Maladaptive beliefs about emotions may be associated with the use of less adaptive emotion regulation strategies, such as rumination, and may contribute to dysfunctional eating behaviors. This study examines the relationship between beliefs about the uncontrollability and uselessness of negative emotions and emotional eating (EE), with a focus on the mediating role of rumination. We also tested an exploratory hypothesis examining whether body mass index (BM…
