Computed tomographic analysis of medial clavicular epiphyseal fusion for age estimation in Indian population.

Forensic age estimation is a crucial aspect of the identification process. While epiphyseal fusion of long bones has been studied for age estimation since a long time, over the past few years, the role of medial clavicular epiphyseal fusion in age estimation is being explored. The medial clavicular epiphyseal fusion can be used to estimate age in young adults, and can also determine whether medicolegally significant ages of 16 and 18 years have been attained by an individual. The present study aimed at generating regression models to estimate age by evaluating the medial clavicular epiphyseal

Multiple epiphyseal dysplasia and related disorders: Molecular genetics, disease mechanisms, and therapeutic avenues.

For the vast majority of the 6000 known rare disease the pathogenic mechanisms are poorly defined and there is little treatment, leading to poor quality of life and high healthcare costs. Genetic skeletal diseases (skeletal dysplasias) are archetypal examples of rare diseases that are chronically debilitating, often life-threatening and for which no treatments are currently available. There are more than 450 unique phenotypes that, although individually rare, have an overall prevalence of at least 1 per 4000 children. Multiple epiphyseal dysplasia (MED) is a clinically and genetically heteroge

Progression of Epiphyseal Cartilage and Bone Pathology in Surgically Treated Cases of Osteochondritis Dissecans of the Elbow.

BACKGROUND: Although a variety of pathologic conditions associated with osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) have been reported, the pathological progression has remained unclear. HYPOTHESIS: Separation of the immature epiphyseal cartilage is an early event in OCD, and osteonecrosis in the articular fragment is a late event. STUDY DESIGN: Case Series; Level of evidence, 4. METHODS: The participants were 26 boys (mean age, 13.8 years; mean skeletal age score for the elbow, 24.6 points) with capitellar OCD who underwent osteochondral autograft transplantation. A total of 28 cylindrical osteochondr

Comparison of conservative treatment outcomes for proximal humeral epiphyseal fractures in patients of different ages.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have suggested that excellent therapeutic outcomes can be achieved with conservative treatment of proximal humeral epiphyseal fractures in patients younger than 11 years old; however, the outcomes of conservative treatment for children older than 11 years are controversial. To address this problem, this study compared outcomes of conservative treatment for proximal humeral epiphyseal fractures in pediatric patients of different ages. METHODS: The patients were divided into two groups for comparative purposes based on age. Group I consisted of 34 patients who were l

Growth of epiphysis after epiphyseal-preservation surgery for childhood osteosarcoma around the knee joint.

BACKGROUND: Epiphyseal-preservation surgery for osteosarcoma is an alternative method which has been indicated carefully to selected patients. The tumor-devitalised autograft treated with liquid nitrogen procedure is one of the biological reconstruction method to reconstruct the defect after tumor excision. The limb length discrepancy is usually appeared in children with their growth after limb-sparing surgery. This study was aimed to investigated the growth of residual epiphysis following epiphyseal-preservation surgery for childhood osteosarcoma around the knee joint. METHODS: We retrospect

Longitudinal Epiphyseal Bracket of the First Metatarsal Bone: Three Case Reports and a Review of the Literature.

Longitudinal epiphyseal bracket (LEB) is a rare bone dysplasia of the tubular bones. Owing to an abnormal secondary ossification center, the affected bones can develop progressive shortening and angular deformity. The aim of our study was to provide an overview of the reported data regarding epidemiology and surgical procedures available for LEB of the first metatarsal bone in a pediatric population combined with a small case series. We report a retrospective case series of 3 nonsyndromic pediatric patients with different ages and with confirmed dysplasia of the first metatarsal bone. All pati

[Treatment of chronic slipped capital femoral epiphysis : Use of dynamic epiphyseal telescopic screws].

BACKGROUND: Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a multifactorial structural loosening in the area through the epiphyseal plate between the epiphysis and metaphysis accompanied by slippage of the femoral head in the mid-dorsal-caudal direction without additional adequate trauma. In this retrospective study, all patients with chronic SCFE were assessed who had been treated by implanting a dynamic epiphyseal telescopic (DET) screw. METHODOLOGY: All patients who had been treated at our hospital with a DET screw implant between December 2006 and November 2014 following diagnosis of chronic

Deletion of IFT80 Impairs Epiphyseal and Articular Cartilage Formation Due to Disruption of Chondrocyte Differentiation.

Intraflagellar transport proteins (IFT) play important roles in cilia formation and organ development. Partial loss of IFT80 function leads Jeune asphyxiating thoracic dystrophy (JATD) or short-rib polydactyly (SRP) syndrome type III, displaying narrow thoracic cavity and multiple cartilage anomalies. However, it is unknown how IFT80 regulates cartilage formation. To define the role and mechanism of IFT80 in chondrocyte function and cartilage formation, we generated a Col2α1; IFT80f/f mouse model by crossing IFT80f/f mice with inducible Col2α1-CreER mice, and deleted IFT80 in chondrocyte linea

Complete distal humeral epiphyseal separation indicating a battered child syndrome: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Complete distal humeral epiphysiolysis is a rare and uncommon injury and may result from severe trauma, e.g. birth injury or battered child syndrome. CASE REPORT: This is a case report of a 5-month-old female child with distal humeral epiphysiolysis. In the course of clinical and radiological examinations, a battered child syndrome could be diagnosed. Open reduction and temporary transfixation of the distal humeral physis were performed. In the middle term follow-up, 1.5-years after the injury, the function of the elbow was nearly normal but the ulnar condyle showed growth disturb

Increased VEGF expression in the epiphyseal cartilage after ischemic necrosis of the capital femoral epiphysis.

UNLABELLED: Ischemic injury to the immature femoral head produces epiphyseal cartilage damage and cessation of endochondral ossification. This study suggests that VEGF facilitates the repair of the necrotic epiphyseal cartilage, which is essential for restoration of endochondral ossification and re-establishment of the growth of the immature femoral head after ischemic necrosis. INTRODUCTION: Legg-Calve-Perthes disease (LCPD) is a childhood form of osteonecrosis that produces growth arrest of the secondary center of ossification. The cessation of growth is caused by ischemic damage to the hyp

Medial meniscus interposition in proximal tibial epiphyseal fracture: a case report and review of the literature.

Proximal tibial fractures are rare in children, and most are treated conservatively. We report a case of a minimally displaced proximal tibial epiphyseal injury (Salter-Harris type III) in an 11-year-old child. We initially thought to treat this fracture conservatively, but the presence of massive haemarthrosis and considerable pain made us choose arthroscopy under general anaesthetic. During examination under anesthesia no instability could be detected, but the knee was locked in 5 degrees of flexion. On screening the fracture was not reducible anatomically. At arthroscopy the medial meniscus

[Correction of the leg axis after epiphyseal fracture and progressive abnormal growth of the proximal tibia].

Development of an angular deformity around the knee joint, following a posttraumatic premature epiphyseal closure is a rare but serious complication. We present a case report of this complication following a proximal tibial epiphyseal injury in a 9 year old child initially treated conservatively with plaster immobilization. Subsequently, partial closure of epiphysis on medial side resulted in genu varum of 20 degrees, which was treated with medial open wedge osteotomy of the proximal tibia combined with resection of a segment from the proximal fibula, and a percutaneous epiphysiodesis of the p

Preossified longitudinal epiphyseal bracket of the foot: treatment by partial bracket excision before ossification.

The longitudinal epiphyseal bracket is a rare ossification defect of tubular bones in the hand and foot. This deformity contains an abnormal secondary ossification center, which may lead to progressive shortening and angular deformity of involved bones. This article describes the results from early treatment of this deformity before the secondary ossification center ossifies. Four patients with seven involved bones (5 metatarsals and 2 phalanges) were treated with surgical excision of the longitudinal epiphyseal brackets, without corrective osteotomy. The average age at surgery was 16 months (

Morphological aspects of the synovial membrane and femoral epiphyseal cartilage in experimentally induced chronic anemia.

The authors describe the microscopic and ultrastructural changes in the synovial membrane and femoral growth cartilage in experimentally induced chronic anemia. The reiterated anoxic stimulus is responsible for premature morphologic changes which become progressively worse and then appear to stabilize after 30 days. The series of events at the completion of the experiment are characterized by the following: 1) villous hyperplasia-hypertrophy with an increase of the secretory vesicles of type B synoviocytes in the intima and lymphoplasmacellular infiltrates in the sub-intima of the synovial mem
