This study investigated the effects of free-range (FR) and cage-rearing (CR) systems on intestinal health, carcass traits, and microbial diversity in the Danzhou chicken breed. Two groups of 125 hens in each group, aged 42 wk, were reared under FR and CR systems. At 50 wk, 50 hens from each group were randomly selected for carcass analysis and 10 hens for intestinal morphology and microbiota profiling. Results indicated a significant increase in villus height (VH) in the duodenum (P < 0.05), jejunum (P < 0.01), and ileum (P < 0.001) of the CR group. Additionally, the ratio of VH to crypt depth

BACKGROUND: The human gut microbiome (GM) is involved in inflammation and immune response regulation. Dysbiosis, an imbalance in this ecosystem, facilitates pathogenic invasion, disrupts immune equilibrium, and potentially triggers diseases including various human leucocyte antigen (HLA)-B27-associated autoinflammatory and autoimmune diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and spondyloarthropathy (SpA). This study assesses compositional and functional alterations of the GM in patients with HLA-B27-associated non-infectious anterior uveitis (AU) compared to healthy controls.

INTRODUCTION: The microbial genome-wide association studies (mbGWAS) have highlighted significant host-microbiome interactions based on microbiome heritability. However, establishing causal relationships between particular microbiota and multiple myeloma (MM) remains challenging due to limited sample sizes.
METHODS: Gut microbiota data from a GWAS with 18,340 participants and MM summary statistics from 456,348 individuals. The inverse variance-weighted (IVW) method was used as the main bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. To assess the robustness of our results, we further per

The gut microbiota establishment in young ruminants has a profound impact on their adult production performance. However, the critical phase for the succession of the gut microbial composition and metabolic profiles of juvenile sika deer still needs to be further investigated. Here, we analyzed the fecal microbiota and metabolites of juvenile sika deer during the birth (D1), transition (D42), and rumination (D70) periods based on 16S rRNA sequencing and gas chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-TOF-MS). The results showed that the fecal bacteria and metabolites composition were s

BACKGROUND: Numerous inflammatory skin diseases are associated with the gut microbiota. Studies of the association between gut microbiota and inflammatory skin diseases have yielded conflicting results owing to confounding factors, and the causal relationship between them remains undetermined.
METHODS: Two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) was used to examine the association between gut microbiota and four common inflammatory skin diseases: acne, psoriasis, urticaria and atopic dermatitis. The summary statistics of the gut microbiota from the largest available genome-wide association study

INTRODUCTION: Considerable evidence has unveiled a potential correlation between gut microbiota and spinal degenerative diseases. However, only limited studies have reported the direct association between gut microbiota and spinal stenosis. Hence, in this study, we aimed to clarify this relationship using a two-sample mendelian randomization (MR) approach.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data for two-sample MR studies was collected and summarized from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of gut microbiota (MiBioGen, n = 13, 266) and spinal stenosis (FinnGen Biobank, 9, 169 cases and 164, 682 control

Dental caries is a biofilm-mediated, sugar-driven, multifactorial, dynamic disease that results in the phasic demineralization and remineralization of dental hard tissues. Despite scientific advances in cariology, dental caries remains a severe global concern. The aim of this study was to determine the optimization of microbial and molecular techniques for the detection of cariogenic pathogens in dental caries patients, the prevalence of cariogenic bacteria on the basis of socioeconomic, climatological, and hygienic factors, and in vitro evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of selected syn

Evidence of gut microbiota disruption for numerous autoimmune diseases has accumulated. Recently, the relationship between the microbiota and primary Sjögren's disease has been increasingly investigated but has yet to be systematically elucidated. Therefore, a meta-analysis of publications dealing on topic was conducted. Case-control studies comparing primary Sjögren's syndrome patients and healthy controls (HCs) were systematically searched in nine databases from inception to March 1, 2023. The primary result quantitatively evaluated in this meta-analysis was the α-diversity. The secondary re

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Even in the absence of inflammation, persistent symptoms in Crohn's disease (CD) are prevalent and worsen quality of life. Amongst patients without inflammation (quiescent CD), we hypothesized that microbial community structure and function, including tryptophan metabolism, would differ between patients with persistent symptoms (qCD + S) and without persistent symptoms (qCD-S).
METHODS: We performed a multicenter observational study nested within the Study of a Prospective Adult Research Cohort with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Quiescent inflammation was defined by fecal c

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a prevalent and progressive disease spectrum ranging from nonalcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), yet there is no effective treatment and efficient noninvasive diagnostic method for NASH. The present study investigated the longitudinal alternations of gut microbiota in the Western diet (WD) induced murine NAFLD model using 16S rRNA sequencing. Evident steatosis and inflammation were detected in the liver at the 8th and 12th week, while prompted hepatic oxidative injury and fibrosis were found at the 16th week. In this

Surgical removal of the intestine, lifesaving in catastrophic gastrointestinal disorders of infancy, can result in a form of intestinal failure known as short bowel syndrome (SBS). Bloodstream infections (BSIs) are a major challenge in pediatric SBS management. BSIs require frequent antibiotic therapy, with ill-defined consequences for the gut microbiome and childhood health. Here, we combine serial stool collection, shotgun metagenomic sequencing, multivariate statistics and genome-resolved strain-tracking in a cohort of 19 patients with surgically-induced SBS to show that antibiotic-driven i

Renal calcium oxalate (CaOx) stones are a common kidney disease. There are few methods for reducing the formation of these stones. However, the potential of probiotics for reducing renal stones has received increasing interest. We previously isolated a strain of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum N-1 from traditional cheese in China. This study aimed to investigate the effects of N-1 on renal CaOx crystal deposition. Thirty rats were randomly allocated to three groups: control group (ddH2O by gavage), model group [ddH2O by gavage and 1% ethylene glycol (EG) in drinking water], and Lactiplantibacill

Background: Gut microbiota (GM) has recently been described as a functional reservoir of antimicrobial resistant genes (ARGs). However, the ARG-carrying bacterial species in the human gut has been poorly studied. This study, for the first time, is reporting bacterial communities' composition and antimicrobial resistome in the stool samples of pregnant and non-pregnant (NP) Saudi females. Methods: Gut bacterial community composition was analyzed by 16S amplicon sequencing and culturomics. High throughput MALDI-TOF technique was used for identification of the isolates from stool samples and eval

Chronic sleep deprivation (CSD) in adolescents has become a trend with adverse health outcomes. Previous studies have demonstrated that sleep deprivation causes inflammation, alters puberty onset, and changes the gut microbiome composition; however, the relationship between these is still unknown. Therefore, we hypothesized that CSD delays the onset of puberty via elevating proinflammatory cytokines and alter ation of gut microbiome composition. Using the modified multiple platform method, we conducted a 4-week CSD experiment in juvenile rats and assessed pubertal markers, antioxidant activity
