BACKGROUND: Dramatic worsening of epidemiological situation with tuberculosis (TB) in the world has made extra-pulmonary tuberculosis actual again. Female genital TB is very rare, but each case still remains a serious medical problem.
CASE REPORT: A 23-year-old human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) seronegative woman with two-month duration amenorrhea underwent surgery due to lower abdominal mass simulating a left ovary carcinoma, suggested by ultrasound examinations. During sampling, we found a mass of round, up to 3 mm, necrotizing nodules, diffuse in the uterus, ovarian and tubarial surfaces,

Bronchiectasis has been defined as the abnormal and permanent dilation of bronchi. It has a variety of causes and has traditionally been viewed as a condition that is irreversible, often progressive and associated with significant morbidity and mortality. In the past, patients had relatively advanced disease by the time the diagnosis was established. By using high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) scanning of the chest, the potential now exists for the much earlier detection and treatment of children with lesser degrees of bronchial dilation and bronchial wall thickening than was previousl

In the past 2 decades tuberculosis has again become a public health priority in the world. Despite the availability of effective and inexpensive tuberculosis treatment the global tuberculosis caseload has not declined. TB is an important cause of childhood morbidity and mortality worldwide. This paper presented epidemiological situation in Poland, Europe and the world.

Blood transfusion is a medical intervention practised throughout the world. Blood is a biologically active material that can transmit diseases (e.g., HIV/AIDS and, perhaps, vCJD). People are becoming increasingly concerned about blood safety, despite improved screening and processing. Consequently, they are reluctant to donate blood or receive transfusions. Such problems can be solved by the development and incorporation into transfusion practices of so-called "blood substitutes" to replace some blood uses. The EuroBloodSubstitutes Project is funded by the European Union Framework 6 Programme …

Patients are exposed to X rays when undergoing medical examinations in diagnostic radiology. Exposure data acquired and assessed in Germany for the year 1997 resulted in a mean annual effective dose of 2 +/- 0.5 mSv per head of the population, thereby reaching or exceeding the average level of environmental radiation in many cases. The underlying frequency of medical X-ray examinations was approximately 136 million, i.e. approximately 1.7 examinations annually per head of the population. For comparison, corresponding data of other countries were extracted from the UNSCEAR 2000 report or origin

Several human diseases in Europe are caused by viruses transmitted by tick bite. These viruses belong to the genus Flavivirus, and include tick-borne encephalitis virus, Omsk haemorrhagic fever virus, louping ill virus, Powassan virus, Nairovirus (Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus) and Coltivirus (Eyach virus). All of these viruses cause more or less severe neurological diseases, and some are also responsible for haemorrhagic fever. The epidemiology, clinical picture and methods for diagnosis are detailed in this review. Most of these viral pathogens are classified as Biosafety Level 3 or…

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is a major parasitic disease, increasingly imported into temperate climates by immigrants from and travelers to endemic areas.
METHOD: To generate valid data on imported infectious diseases to Europe and to recognize trends over time, the European Network on Imported Infectious Diseases Surveillance (TropNetEurop) was founded in 1999. Three hundred and thirty-three reports of schistosomiasis were analyzed for epidemiologic and clinical features.
RESULTS: Male patients accounted for 64% of all cases. The average age of all patients was 29.5 years. The majority of p…

According with to International Labor Office, the European Union gave the directions to improve the life of workers not only by regulating care, but also safety and return to work. Each European country is conforming to this. In Italy, INAIL, an independent body under the control of the Department of Labor and the Ministry of Health, covers the workers for occupational accidents and is funded by an insurance premium, obligatory paid by the employer. INAIL has the medicolegal task of assessment of injuries, supply of prostheses, physical therapy, and various compensation according to the degree…

Mutations in the gene encoding connexin-26 (specified GJB2) have been shown to be a major cause of nonsyndromic recessive deafness (NSRD), and a single mutation 35delG in the GJB2 gene accounts for the majority of cases of NSRD. This mutation was screened in France and in other European populations by a reliable PCR method. We present here a meta-analysis of the 35delG frequencies in 4123 random controls from 20 European countries, and show that the mutation is more frequent in the south of Europe than in the north; a north-south increasing cline of 35delG frequencies is established (r = -0.52…

Cercarial dermatitis is a parasitic impasse that has worldwide distribution. The condition manifests itself as a highly pruriginous skin rash and is due to penetration of the dermis by larval stages (furcocercariae) of avian trematodes. Many species may be responsible for this disease. In Europe the genus Trichobilharzia is widely represented, in particular by the species T. ocellata; the definitive host is the duck (Anas platyrhinchos); the intermediate hosts are snails of the genus Lymnea (L. ovata or L. stagnalis). In France, cases of cercarial dermatitis were reported in June and July 1994…

In western Europe there has been a striking decline in the incidence of hepatitis B virus infection during the second half of the 1980s. Only a minor part of this decrease is the effect of vaccination, since rather limited vaccination programmes have been introduced in most west European countries. The policies for recommendation of hepatitis B vaccination have differed from north to south in Europe due to different risks of exposure to hepatitis B virus. In Scandinavia, vaccination has mainly been recommended for health-care workers with frequent blood contact, while in Germany and in France …

This article grew out of a keynote address prepared for the conference, "From Abortion to Contraception: Public Health Approaches to Reducing Unwanted Pregnancy and Abortion Through Improved Family Planning Services," held in Tbilisi, Georgia, USSR in October 1990. The article reviews the legal, religious, and medical situation of induced abortion in Europe in historical perspective, and considers access to abortion services, attitudes of health professionals, abortion incidence, morbidity and mortality, the new antiprogestins, the characteristics of abortion seekers, late abortions, postabort…

For this review, the countries of Eastern Europe are the USSR and Poland (in the eastern part of the European continent), what was formerly East Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary (in the north and center), and Yugoslavia, Romania, Bulgaria, and Albania (to the south). During 1989 and 1990, all of these countries experienced remarkable political and social change, thereby making the term "Eastern Europe" a political anachronism. There are a great many differences among these countries in terms of human behavior, parasites, environment and animal husbandry practices. In spite of recent politi…

Europe's ageing population is transforming universal healthcare from a financing challenge into a delivery-capacity challenge. Longer lives are increasingly accompanied by multimorbidity, polypharmacy, dementia, cardiometabolic disease, cancer, mobility loss and functional limitation, with rural regions facing the most rapidly ageing population and the weakest service infrastructure. Therapeutic innovations, including incretin-based metabolic therapies, immuno-oncology, antibody-drug conjugates and earlier detection technologies, may extend healthy ageing but will also increase demand for coor…
