Neurophysiological correlates of excitement in schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: The excitement cluster (excitement, hostility, uncooperativeness and impulsivity) may contribute to the risk of violent behaviour, treatment non-adherence, likelihood of discharge and substance use in psychosis. Evidence suggests involvement of frontal executive mechanisms that may show sex differences in their association with symptom severity. The current study tests the association between excitement and the frontal N200 and P300 components of the auditory event-related potential in schizophrenia as a function of sex. METHOD: Fourteen men and 14 women with schizophrenia (mean il

Performance Differences Using a Vibro-Tactile P300 BCI in LIS-Patients Diagnosed With Stroke and ALS.

Patients with locked-in syndrome (LIS) are typically unable to move or communicate and can be misdiagnosed as patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC). Behavioral assessment scales are limited in their ability to detect signs of consciousness in this population. Recent research has shown that brain-computer interface (BCI) technology could supplement behavioral scales and allows to establish communication with these severely disabled patients. In this study, we compared the vibro-tactile P300 based BCI performance in two groups of patients with LIS of different etiologies: stroke (n = 6)

Multimodal neuroimaging in schizophrenia: a systematic review of EEG and fMRI integration.

Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a complex psychiatric disorder involving disruptions in neural signaling and neurovascular function that are incompletely characterized by single-modality imaging. This systematic review evaluates how concurrent electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) can advance understanding of brain dynamics underlying SCZ, focusing on neurovascular coupling and large-scale network abnormalities. A systematic search of three online databases identified 16 English-language studies of individuals with SCZ or related psychosis spectrum conditions usi

No Effects of rTMS on Performance Monitoring and Attentional Bias in Patients With Alcohol Use Disorder: A Pilot Study.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) presents a promising approach for treating patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD). However, its neuropsychological working mechanisms are to be elucidated. Therefore, we investigated the effect of rTMS treatment on event-related potentials (ERPs) evoked by a flanker task and a passive picture task using electro-encephalography, in 30 recently detoxified patients. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either 10 sessions of rTMS or sham rTMS. Measurements were made at baseline, and after 5 and 10 treatments. The results revealed no s

Objective data-driven personalised approach to diagnosis of chronic tinnitus: the Tinnitus Detection (TIDE) project - protocol for the identification and validation of a biomarker for tinnitus.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is the perception of sound without an external source, often considered a phantom percept similar to phantom limb sensations, resulting from maladaptive plasticity in the brain. The condition lacks an established biomarker for diagnosis but recent studies have linked it to neural changes. The Tinnitus Detection consortium aims to identify and validate potential biomarkers for tinnitus presence and intensity. METHODS/DESIGN: This multicentre prospective case-control study will recruit 560 adults (280 chronic tinnitus; 280 controls). Participants will complete standardised

Inequity aversion under procedural justice in deaf college students: an ERP study.

The inconsistent change of inequity aversion under procedural justice may result from the individual difference of cognitive processing ability for information. Deaf college students' social cognition is challenged by systemic barriers that limit inclusive communication and social interaction. However, it is still unknown how inequity aversion manifests among deaf college students in the context of procedural justice. In this study, we recruited 28 deaf and 31 hearing college students by using a modified dictator game combined with Event-related potentials (ERPs). Behavioral results showed tha

Neural correlates of the abolished self-referential memory effect in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: The self-referential memory (SRM) effect refers to the phenomenon that stimuli processed with reference to the self are better remembered than those referenced to others. Studies have shown that schizophrenia patients do not have this memorial advantage for self-referenced information. The current study investigated the electrophysiological mechanism of the abolished SRM effect in schizophrenia. METHOD: Twenty schizophrenia patients and 22 controls were recruited to complete an SRM task. We used a high-time resolution event-related potential (ERP) technique to analyze the electrop

Which physiological components are more suitable for visual ERP based brain-computer interface? A preliminary MEG/EEG study.

We investigated which evoked response component occurring in the first 800 ms after stimulus presentation was most suitable to be used in a classical P300-based brain-computer interface speller protocol. Data was acquired from 275 Magnetoencephalographic sensors in two subjects and from 61 Electroencephalographic sensors in four. To better characterize the evoked physiological responses and minimize the effect of response overlap, a 1000 ms Inter Stimulus Interval was preferred to the short (<400 ms) trial length traditionally used in this class of BCIs. To investigate which scalp regions conv

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder involves differential cortical processing in a visual spatial attention paradigm.

OBJECTIVE: Inattention is undoubtedly one of the main characteristics of Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Nevertheless, a growing corpus of evidence shows that not all attentional processes are affected in this condition. This study aimed to explore the distribution of attentional resources in children with ADHD via a spatially shifted double-oddball visual task. METHODS: We recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) for all visual stimuli. Subjects were instructed to allocate attention in a specific area of visual space while ignoring all stimuli presented outside. Ten male chi

A parietal-frontal network studied by somatosensory oddball MEG responses, and its cross-modal consistency.

Previous studies using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and event-related potentials (ERPs) of the brain have found that a distributed parietal-frontal neuronal network is activated in normals during both auditory and visual oddball tasks. The common cortical regions in this network are inferior parietal lobule (IPL)/supramarginal gyrus (SMG), anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). It is not clear whether the same network is activated by oddball tasks during somatosensory stimulation. The present study addressed this question by testing healthy

Cognitive and neurophysiological effects of bilateral tDCS neuromodulation in patients with minimally conscious state.

The minimally conscious state (MCS) is a clinical condition characterized by severely reduced but present awareness of self and the environment. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has shown promising potential. The aim of this quasi-randomised control study was to investigate the effects of bilateral of tDCS applied to the right and left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) on neurophysiological and cognitive outcomes in 28 patients with MCS. Participants were quasi-randomly assigned to one of two groups: experimental group with tDCS over both DLPFC, and a control group, which re

Dissociating neural signatures of mental state retrodiction and classification based on facial expressions.

Posed facial expressions of actors have often been used as stimuli to induce mental state inferences, in order to investigate 'Theory of Mind' processes. However, such stimuli make it difficult to determine whether perceivers are using a basic or more elaborated mentalizing strategy. The current study used as stimuli covert recordings of target individuals who viewed various emotional expressions, which caused them to spontaneously mimic these expressions. Perceivers subsequently judged these subtle emotional expressions of the targets: in one condition ('classification') participants were ins

Test-retest reliability of decisions under risk with outcome evaluation: evidence from behavioral and event-related potentials (ERPs) measures in 2 monetary gambling tasks.

The balance between potential gains and losses under risk, the stability of risk propensity, the associated reward processing, and the prediction of subsequent risk behaviors over time have become increasingly important topics in recent years. In this study, we asked participants to carry out 2 risk tasks with outcome evaluation-the monetary gambling task and mixed lottery task twice, with simultaneous recording of behavioral and electroencephalography data. Regarding risk behavior, we observed both individual-specific risk attitudes and outcome-contingent risky inclination following a loss ou

The Silent Effects of Loud Music: Examining Hidden Hearing Loss and Cognitive Function in Young Adults.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigates whether high levels of headphone music listening in young adults contribute to hidden hearing loss (HHL) and whether listening effort (LE) and cognitive skills differ based on headphone exposure. METHODS: Fifty participants (18-30 years) with normal hearing were divided into high-risk (HR) and low-risk (LR) groups based on annual headphone exposure levels recorded via smartphone applications. Participants underwent high-frequency audiometry, auditory brainstem response (ABR), matrix sentence test, behavioral LE measurement, and P300 testing. The measureme

The characteristics of cognitive impairment in subjective chronic tinnitus.

INTRODUCTION: Subjective chronic tinnitus is a common medical syndrome with a high frequency of cognitive impairment; however, the characteristics of cognitive impairment in chronic tinnitus are poorly understood. Investigating the scope of cognitive impairment across the severity spectrum of tinnitus patients may shed light on the issue. METHODS: A consecutive series of 207 subjective chronic tinnitus patients were classified into mild tinnitus group (n = 95) and severe tinnitus group (n = 112) by THI score (the cutoff THI scores were 37/38). These patients were assessed using the Cognitive

The "serendipitous brain": Low expectancy and timing uncertainty of conscious events improve awareness of unconscious ones (evidence from the Attentional Blink).

To anticipate upcoming sensory events, the brain picks-up and exploits statistical regularities in the sensory environment. However, it is untested whether cumulated predictive knowledge about consciously seen stimuli improves the access to awareness of stimuli that usually go unseen. To explore this issue, we exploited the Attentional Blink (AB) effect, where conscious processing of a first visual target (T1) hinders detection of early following targets (T2). We report that timing uncertainty and low expectancy about the occurrence of consciously seen T2s presented outside the AB period, impr

The effect of acute sleep deprivation on visual evoked potentials in professional drivers.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have demonstrated that as little as 18 hours of sleep deprivation can cause deleterious effects on performance. It has also been suggested that sleep deprivation can cause a "tunnel-vision" effect, in which attention is restricted to the center of the visual field. The current study aimed to replicate these behavioral effects and to examine the electrophysiological underpinnings of these changes. DESIGN: Repeated-measures experimental study. SETTING: University laboratory. PATIENTS OR PARTICIPANTS: Nineteen professional drivers (1 woman; mean age = 45.3 +/

Effort enhances feedback expectation but reduces feedback evaluation in prosocial contexts: A behavioral and ERP study.

Previous research has shown that effort expenditure influences feedback processing in prosocial behavior. However, it remains unclear whether effort enhances or reduces feedback expectations and evaluations in prosocial behavior. Therefore, using event-related potentials (ERP) and multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA), the current study employed a modified prosocial effort task to examine how effort separately affects feedback expectation and evaluation in prosocial behavior. Behaviorally, high effort (vs. low effort) reduced participants' satisfaction when the beneficiary was another person, n
