We studied visually evoked cerebral blood flow responses (VEFR) and visual evoked potentials (VEP) to different visual contrasts and analysed the relationship between them. The records were made from 35 healthy volunteers aged 38.6 +/- 10.1 years. The stimulus was a black-and-white checkerboard with visual contrasts (VC) of 1%, 10% and 100%. The VEFR were measured in the posterior cerebral artery using transcranial Doppler, and the VEP were recorded from the occipital leads. We found the relationship between visual contrast and VEFR (r = 0.79, P < 0.01) as well as between visual contrast and V…

BACKGROUND: The staging of Ménière's disease that was proposed by the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery in 1995 was based on the arithmetic mean of the pure-tone thresholds at 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 kHz using the worst audiogram during the 6-month interval before treatment. The stages were classified as follows: stage I, a 4-tone average of less than 26 dB; stage II, 26 to 40 dB; stage III, 41 to 70 dB; and stage IV, more than 70 dB.
OBJECTIVE: Because the saccule, next to the cochlea, is the second most frequent site of hydrops formation, we wanted to find out whether

DSEPs are very useful in determining which patients with degenerative lumbar spine disease have the added component of neurogenic compromise. Based on sound physiologic principles, level-by-level prolongation of DSEP latencies, reduction of amplitude, asymmetry, or a complete absence of response is associated with dysfunction in that particular neurologic pathway. This result does not necessarily correspond to the exact level of stenosis noted on MRI, because the rootlets in the lumbar and sacral regions pass through multiple spinal segments as they course through the spinal canal. Given that

In recent years it has been demonstrated that loud clicks generate short latency vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP). It has also been demonstrated that midline forehead skull tap stimulation evokes similar VEMP. In the present study, the influence of skull tap direction on VEMP was studied in 13 normal subjects and in five patients with unilateral vestibular loss. Gentle skull taps were delivered manually above each ear on the side of the skull. The muscular responses were recorded over both sternocleidomastoid muscles using skin electrodes. Among the normals, laterally directed skul

We investigated whether evoked potentials to omitted stimuli could be measured in rats. Such an animal model would provide a measure of aspects of information processing concerned with expectancy and time estimation. In a first experiment, omission evoked potentials (OEPs) were elicited in rats by omitting stimuli (10%) from a train of tone pips with a fixed ISI (3 s). A control session consisted of omitting stimuli (10%) from a train of tone pips with a variable ISI (2.5-3.5 s). In a second experiment, OEPs were measured in rats that received 4 mg x kg(-1) diazepam or vehicle sc. In the first…

PURPOSE: To investigate how central retinal function contributes to pattern visual evoked cortical potentials (PVECPs), we recorded transient and steady-state PVECPs in patients with macular disease and compared the results with those of patients with optic neuritis. The results were also evaluated for correlation with visual acuity and kinetic perimetric measurements.
METHODS: PVECPs to 3 rev/s stimulation (transient) and 12 rev/s stimulation (steady-state) for check sizes 15' and 30' were obtained from all patients and age-matched healthy controls. The peak latency and amplitude of the P100

In children, multiple sclerosis is rare and has some clinical and paraclinical differences compared with adults. The assessment of corticospinal motor tracts is expected to be relevant because of their frequent early involvement in this disease. Reported are the results of transcranial magnetic stimulation in two children who presented at 12 and 9 years of age with clinically probable and definite multiple sclerosis, respectively. In Patient 1 the excitatory cortical threshold for the upper limbs was abnormally raised. In Patient 2 the latency of the motor-evoked potentials was considerably in…

Visual evoked potentials were recorded from the occipital, parietal, central, frontal, and posterior temporal areas of the cortex during recognition of emotionally positive, negative and neutral facial expressions and during passive observation in 22 right-handed healthy subjects. These studies showed that in the posterior temporal areas, the latencies of the N90, P150, and N180 waves of potentials evoked by faces with emotionally negative expressions were significantly shorter than those evoked by other types of facial stimuli. Differences were seen both on recognition and during passive obse…

UNLABELLED: The paravertebral nerve blocks used in upper abdominal or thoracic surgery provide excellent pain relief and can inhibit some aspects of the neuroendocrine stress response to surgical trauma, which suggests that a very high-quality afferent block can be effected. To confirm this, we evaluated intercostal somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) in 10 patients undergoing paravertebral nerve blocks as a treatment for chronic pain. SSEPs were recorded before and after ipsilateral thoracic paravertebral deposition of 1.5 mg/kg bupivacaine 0.5%. Sensory loss to temperature was demonstrat…

The aim was to evaluate alterations in Visual-Evoked Potentials (VEP) and Electroretinogram (ERG) and discover whether these tests are useful for determining residual visual acuity in cases where a patient is unable to collaborate. Flash and, when possible, Transient Pattern Reversal Visual-Evoked Potentials and Maximal Response ERG were recorded in 8 children (under three years old) affected by different aspects of optic nerve coloboma. None of them had visual acuity evaluated because of poor collaboration. All examinations were carried out using skin electrodes. Amplitude of the a and b comp…

To investigate the macular contribution to the amplitude and latency of pattern visual evoked cortical potentials (PVECPs), we recorded PVECPs in patients with unilateral macular disease (retinal diseases involving the macular region) and optic neuritis. We selected patients with visual acuities better than 0.3, which is thought to be the minimum acuity to provide clearly discernible responses. The visual stimulus was a checkerboard. We varied the check size in 4 steps as 7, 14, 28, and 56 min of arc, and the contrast was 20% or 80%. The amplitude of the sinusoidal wave of steady-state VECPs (

Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) have proved to be accurate predictors of outcome in term infants with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. Parallels between term asphyxia and hypoxic-ischemic injury in the preterm brain suggested the hypothesis that VEPs may predict the development of periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) and later cerebral palsy. 123 infants less than 32 weeks' gestational age were enrolled in the study. VEPs were done in the first 3 weeks of life (usually first week). VEPs did show a statistically significant association with PVL (p < 0.04) although false-positive recordings were t…
