Air pollution and increased levels of fractional exhaled nitric oxide in children with no history of airway damage.

Air pollution is associated with a wide range of adverse respiratory events. In order to study the mechanism associated with these effects, the relationships between fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), a potential marker of airway inflammation, and exposure to air pollution were examined in schoolchildren. FeNO was measured in 104 children (34 asthmatics and 70 non-asthmatics) drawn from the general population simultaneously with air pollution assessments (fine particles with an aerodiameter under 2.5 microm, nitrogen dioxide, acetaldehyde, and formaldehyde, with pumps and passive samplers

Prediction of asthma in symptomatic preschool children using exhaled nitric oxide, Rint and specific IgE.

RATIONALE: For clinicians it remains very difficult to predict whether preschool children with symptoms suggestive of asthma will develop asthma in later childhood. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether measurement of fraction of exhaled nitric oxide (FE(NO)), interrupter resistance (Rint) or specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) in 4-year-old children with suggestive symptoms can predict asthma symptoms up to age 8 years. METHODS: Children were recruited from the PIAMA birth cohort. All children with symptoms suggestive of asthma at age 3 or 4 years, who were invited for medical examination at age 4

Biological effect markers in exhaled breath condensate and biomonitoring in welders: impact of smoking and protection equipment.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of welding as well as the impact of smoking and protection measures on biological effect markers in exhaled breath condensate. Additionally, biomonitoring of chromium, aluminium and nickel in urine was performed to quantify internal exposure. METHODS: Exhaled breath condensate (EBC) and urine samples of 45 male welders and 24 male non-exposed control subjects were collected on Friday pre-shift and after 8 h of work post-shift. In EBC, biological effect markers such as malondialdehyde, nitrite, nitrate, 3-nitrotyrosine, tyrosin

Exhaled breath condensate pH and ammonia in cystic fibrosis and response to treatment of acute pulmonary exacerbations.

Exhaled breath condensate (EBC) pH reflects the acid-base homeostasis of the airway lining fluid and is up to 3 log order lower in various inflammatory lung diseases including asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis, and cystic fibrosis (CF) than in normal controls. The aim of this study was to confirm this finding in CF and determine if there was a significant change in EBC pH after treatment of an acute pulmonary exacerbation. Ten subjects with CF and a pulmonary exacerbation, and 10 healthy age-matched control subjects were studied. EBC was collected at the onset of an acute pulmonary exacerbation and

The effect of acute pain crisis on exhaled nitric oxide levels in children with sickle cell disease.

Exhaled nitric oxide (FE(NO)) has been shown to be decreased in children with sickle cell disease. We sought to evaluate the effect of sickle cell vaso-occlusive crisis (VOC) on FE(NO) levels. We measured FE(NO) levels in 42 children with sickle cell disease, 29 in their baseline health and 13 during an acute VOC. There was no difference in FE(NO) levels between children at baseline (15.12 +/- 9.32 ppb) and those during an acute VOC (15.68 +/- 7.26 ppb; P = 0.794). FE(NO) is not a useful marker of acute VOC in children with sickle cell disease.

Increased 8-isoprostane, a marker of oxidative stress in exhaled breath condensate in subjects with asbestos exposure.

Asbestosis and pleural plaques exhibit unpredictable but progressive development, and there are no markers routinely available to measure their prognosis. Asbestos exposure induces the generation of reactive oxygen species, and 8-isoprostane is involved in experimental asbestos-related lung toxicity. This oxidative stress marker was measured in exhaled breath condensate (EBC) in 92 former asbestos workers with mean age 68.8+/-1.7 yr and mean duration of asbestos exposure 24.1+/-2.0 yr. The control group had 46 subjects with mean age 65.2+/-3.3 yr. The mean level of 8-isoprostane, analyzed by l

Nitric oxide production in the exhaled air of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis in relation to HIV co-infection.

BACKGROUND: Nitric oxide (NO) is essential for host defense in rodents, but the role of NO during tuberculosis (TB) in man remains controversial. However, earlier observations that arginine supplementation facilitates anti-TB treatment, supports the hypothesis that NO is important in the host defense against TB. Local production of NO measured in fractional exhaled air (FeNO) in TB patients with and without HIV co-infection has not been reported previously. Thus, our aim was to investigate levels of FeNO in relation to clinical symptoms and urinary NO metabolites (uNO). METHODS: In a cross se

Exhaled nitric oxide in infants--what is a nice test like FENO doing in a place like this?

In adults and older children the measurement of fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FENO) has been shown to be useful as a tool to diagnose and monitor eosinophilic airway inflammation. However, the recommended method to measure FENO in school-age children is not suited for use in preschool children and infants. This article reviews the data on FENO measurements in infants. In the first year of life, measurement of FENO can be done during tidal breathing or during a single forced passive expiration. Several technical factors, including contamination with nasal and ambient NO, and the influence of

Acetone, ammonia and hydrogen cyanide in exhaled breath of several volunteers aged 4-83 years.

Original on-line measurements of acetone, ammonia and hydrogen cyanide in the exhaled breath of several volunteers within the age ranges 4-6 years and 60-83 years are reported and compared with previous data on volunteer cohorts covering ages 17-18 years and 20-60 years. The compiled data show that a significant statistical increase in breath ammonia occurs with increasing age, but that acetone and hydrogen cyanide do not vary greatly with age.

Noxious compounds in exhaled air, a potential cause for ocular manifestations of H. pylori gastrointestinal infection.

Helicobacter pylori infection is one of the most common chronic bacterial infections worldwide. In the past few years, a variety of extradigestive disorders have been associated with H. pylori infection. This infection has also been linked to some ophthalmic disorders, including glaucoma, central serous chorioretinopathy, uveitis and blepharitis. Several possible theories to explain pathogenetic mechanism underlying the observed associations have been provided. H. pylori infection causes elaboration of some noxious compounds, including ammonia, hydrogen nitrate and hydrogen cyanide, in exhaled

Nitroglycerin-patch induced tolerance is associated with reduced ability of nitroglycerin to increase exhaled nitric oxide.

Nitroglycerin (GTN), used in the treatment of ischemic heart disease, acts through the liberation of nitric oxide (NO). However, its clinical use is limited due to tolerance development. Expired NO was used as an indicator of GTN-bioactivation and was measured together with plasma nitrite and mean arterial pressure (MAP) during GTN indicator infusions. The model was applied in rabbits subjected to various time periods of low-dose GTN pretreatment by patch application for 1, 24 and 72 h. Pretreatment with GTN-patch resulted in significant attenuation of expired NO from the GTN indicator infusio

Maternal atopic disease modifies effects of prenatal risk factors on exhaled nitric oxide in infants.

In a prospective healthy birth cohort, we determined whether levels of exhaled nitric oxide (eNO) in healthy unselected infants at the age of 1 month were associated with maternal atopic disease and prenatal and early postnatal environmental exposures. Tidal eNO was measured in 98 healthy, unsedated infants (35 from mothers with atopy) (mean age +/- SD, 36.0 +/- 6.2 days) and was compared with histories taken in standardized interviews. eNO was higher in males compared with females (17.7 vs. 14.6 ppb, p = 0.042) and infants exposed to postnatal maternal smoking (+4.4 ppb, p = 0.027), adjusting

Exhaled nitric oxide at school age in prematurely born infants with neonatal chronic lung disease.

Prematurely born infants with neonatal chronic lung disease (CLD) have increased respiratory morbidity and bronchial obstruction at school age. To evaluate the possible inflammatory basis of lung function abnormalities, we studied 40 children, 7.5-9.6 years of age, born very prematurely (birth weights, 600-1,575 g) and 14 nonatopic term-born controls, using flow-volume spirometry and exhaled nitric oxide (eNO) measurements. In children born prematurely, eNO was significantly higher in atopics than in nonatopics (respective means, 14.8 vs. 6.3 ppb, P = 0.02). Nonatopic prematurely born infants

Exhaled nitric oxide is elevated in patients with progressive systemic sclerosis without interstitial lung disease.

BACKGROUND: Progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) is a multisystem disorder of unknown etiology. Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is a major cause of mortality in this condition, and a major challenge in this regard is to identify parameters that would predict the onset or progression of ILD in patients with PSS. Abnormal cellularity of BAL fluid (BALF) has been demonstrated in patients with PSS without ILD. STUDY OBJECTIVES: We investigated exhaled nitric oxide (NO) as a noninvasive marker of pulmonary inflammation in patients with PSS with and without clinical and radiologic evidence of ILD.

High levels of exhaled nitric oxide (NO) and NO synthase III expression in lesional smooth muscle in lymphangioleiomyomatosis.

Smooth-muscle proliferation is the hallmark of lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM). Although little is known about the pathogenesis of LAM, nitric oxide (NO) is a key regulator of smooth-muscle proliferation. NO is linked to the pathogenesis of other lung diseases such as asthma, in part by the finding of higher-than-normal levels of exhaled NO. If NO were involved in the abnormal smooth-muscle proliferation in LAM, we reasoned that exhaled NO from individuals with LAM would also differ from that of healthy control subjects. To evaluate this hypothesis, we studied exhaled NO in individuals with LAM

[Lipid peroxidation markers in the exhaled breath and microsomal oxidation in patients with chronic diffuse liver diseases].

Low-molecular hydrocarbons (butan, pentan) from the exhaled air as lipid peroxidation (LPO) markers were quantified in patients with chronic diffuse liver diseases. The study was also made of microsomal oxidation enzymic activity by antipirin metabolism. The above parameters were followed up in the course of antioxidant treatment. As shown by total butan and pentan levels, LPO activity varied with the disease, being high in hepatic cirrhosis and primary biliary cirrhosis, but low in chronic active hepatitis and fat dystrophy. Increased levels of butan and pentan occurred in association with in

Application of PTR-ToF-MS for detecting and tracking E-liquid aroma compounds in exhaled breath.

Real-time characterization of e-cigarettes chemical constituents' persistence in the respiratory tract is essential for exposure assessment and health risk evaluation, but has not been previously demonstrated. In this study, proton transfer reaction-time-of-flight-mass spectrometry (PTR-ToF-MS) is integrated with multivariate statistical analysis to select volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from commercially available e-liquid products and to track their washout kinetics. Participants (= 10) inhaled single puffs from an e-cigarette loaded with unflavoured e-liquid base, or cin
