AIMS: To determine the impact of microorganism virulence on visual outcomes in endophthalmitis.
METHODS: Retrospective, multicentre cohort study of patients presenting with endophthalmitis between 2006 and 2021. A literature review was conducted to divide cultured microorganisms into low and high virulence subcategories.
RESULTS: 610 eyes with endophthalmitis were recruited from New Zealand, the UK and Israel. The median age was 69.4 years. The median visual acuity was hand movements at presentation and 20/120 at the final follow-up. Severe visual loss (≤20/200) occurred in 237 eyes (38.9%)

A history is presented of a 40-year-old male patient suffering from bilateral choroidal melanoma. Both eyes were treated with 106Ru/106Rh beta-irradiation. 2 years later one eye was enucleated because of radiogenic central vein thrombosis with secondary glaucoma. Histologically the tumor cells showed radiogenic damages and there were no signs of a new tumor growth. The other eye, however, is still functioning 6 years later with a visual acuity of 1.0.

The results of keratoplasty à chaud in 49 eyes are reported. None of the eyes had to be enucleated. In 43% the transplant remained clear. The prognosis was best in cases of bacterial or fungal ulcers, provided that vascularization did not involve more than one quadrant. The results are compared with those of other authors who recommend the use of tissue adhesives first and only perform corneal grafting some months later.

A 60-year-old woman developed an anterior uveitis of unknown etiology in her right eye. Topical treatment was corticosteroids led to a regression of the inflammation, but three months later a severe relapse occurred, followed by endophthalmitis and blindness. At this time a previously unknown pulmonary tuberculosis was diagnosed. In histologic sections of the enucleated eye numerous acid-fast bacilli were demonstrated. Diagnostic and therapeutic considerations are discussed.

PURPOSE: To summarize the clinicopathological characteristics and prognosis of uveal melanoma (UM) after enucleation in Chinese patients.
METHODS: Between 2003 and 2012, a series of 171 patients with UM received enucleation at the Eye & ENT Hospital of Fudan University in Shanghai. Patient clinical information was collected. Pathological examination and BAP1 staining of the enucleated eyes were conducted. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard regressions were conducted to determine the risk factors, and the survival rates were calculated and compared.

Nine years after enucleation of the right eye because of a choroidal melanoma a choroidal melanoma a metastasis of the melanoma developed in the left orbit. Histologically, the two tumors were identical spindle-cell B melanomas. No other primary tumors or metastases were found. This is only the third case of this rare form of metastasization ever reported.

After treatment of secondary angle closure glaucomas by ciliary body exposure with lamellar scleral resection five eyes had to be enucleated. In view of the histological findings taken from these eyes mode of action and therapeutic value of this operation are considered. The effectiveness of scleral resection seems to be doubtful and there is evidence that permanent regulation of intraocular tension depends mainly on direct diathermy of the ciliary body.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of a 2-drug chemotherapy regimen without external-beam radiotherapy (EBRT) and/or without enucleation in bilateral retinoblastoma.
METHODS: From 1996 to 2010, 79 patients were diagnosed with bilateral RB and were eligible for chemotherapy. Chemotherapy was administered prior to and/or following local therapy to the eye. All patients received 3 cycles of chemo-reduction with carboplatin and vincristine, additional cycles of the same or other chemotherapy, local therapy, EBRT and enucleation were determined according to re-evaluation by the ophthalmologist.

We report a case of a blinding, perforating globe injury from Taser trauma. There have been other instances involving similar circumstances, but this traumatic event resulted in the loss of all meaningful vision and eventual enucleation. Despite meticulous planning and intervention, however, Taser trauma can result in devastating ocular injury.

PURPOSE: We report a case of acutely presenting mesectodermal leiomyoma of the ciliary body in a 29-year-old female who reported waking up with swollen eyelids of the right eye and light-perception vision. The affected eye had elevated intraocular pressure, a flat anterior chamber, and a pale, round mass arising from the nasal ciliary body, invading the angle and protruding into the visual axis posterior to the lens. Within days, the visual acuity decreased to no light perception. The eye was enucleated.
