This study emphasizes the importance of accurate diagnosis and therapy. Modern laboratory techniques were used to scan conjunctival swabs from 287 patients with 305 red eyes between 1.1. 1985 and 1.6. 1985. 17 patients (5.9%) showed Chlamydia infection. The main bacterial organism found was Staphylococcus, mostly of a resistant strain. Allergic conjunctivitis and typical viral infections were not considered in this study. As reported in the recent literature eye infections caused by Chlamydia trachomatis are increasing in number.

Seven new antimycotics are presented that are at different points of development or approval. These substances are mainly first-in-class drugs. They are primarily developed for systemic administration. However, with the support of a pharmacist, the intravenous formulation may be used as eyedrops. In this short review, the activities of the substances against various fungal infections are described. After unsuccessful conventional therapy of fungal eye infections, one of these new substances might be suitable to cure the mycosis.

Human adenovirus commonly causes infections of respiratory, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and ocular surface mucosae. Although most adenovirus eye infections are mild and self-limited, specific viruses within human adenovirus species D are associated with epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC), a severe and highly contagious ocular surface infection, which can lead to chronic and/or recurrent, visually disabling keratitis. In this review, we discuss the links between adenovirus ontogeny, genomics, immune responses, and corneal pathogenesis, for those viruses that cause EKC.

AIMS: To investigate the major shifts in the ratio of lamellar keratoplasty (LKP) to penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) and in the preoperative indications for each procedure.

Cellular imaging of the human anterior eye is critical for understanding complex ophthalmic diseases, yet current techniques are constrained by a limited field of view or insufficient contrast. To determine the antiviral effects of compounds against ocular adenovirus (AdV) infection, we established an animal model of AdV infection in cotton rat eyes. Cotton rat eyes were inoculated intrastromally and topically with four AdV serotypes 4, 5, 8, and 37, and treated topically with 1% HPMPC (cidofovir) eye drops twice a day.
