[Fundus autofluorescence in patients with hereditary macular dystrophies, malattia leventinese, familial dominant and aged-related drusen].

PURPOSE: The lack of histopathological material has placed limitation on our knowledge on the composition of focal deposits in eyes with macular dystrophies, malattia leventinese, dominant drusen and age related macular degeneration. This study was designed to study the composition of focal deposits in these eyes by documenting fundus autofluorescence in vivo. METHODS: Fundus autofluorescence was documented in 343 eyes of 199 subjects with macular dystrophies, malattia leventinese, dominant drusen and age-related macular degeneration using a laser scanning ophthalmoscope (Zeiss, Oberkochen; e

Family background of drug-related deaths: a descriptive study based on interviews with relatives of deceased drug users.

Drug abuse and problems arising from it are increasing all over the world. Most of the research concerning substance abuse has focused on three dimensions: sociocultural influences, personal characteristics, and interpersonal factors. The aim of this descriptive study was to describe family characteristics of drug-related deaths examined at the Viennese Institute of Forensic Medicine in 1993. Furthermore, it was of interest to analyze the onset of substance use as well as traumatic life events during childhood. For this purpose, relatives or partners for life of drug-related deaths, examined f

Studies in aging of the brain: IV. Familial Alzheimer disease: Relation to transmissible dementia, aneuploidy, and microtubular defects.

Alzheimer disease was transmitted in a pattern consistent with an autosomal dominant trait in three families. This brings to 50 the number of such families reported. In one of our families, one patient had histologically confirmed Alzheimer disease, whereas her sister had proved spongiform encephalopathy. Other data suggest a link between familial Alzheimer disease and transmissible dementia. Alzheimer disease is associated with abnormal neurofibrillary structures, Down syndrome, and abnormal numbers of chromosomes in lymphocytes (aneuploidy). These observations are consistent with a disorder

Disaster-related information support systems for families of older adults with special healthcare needs: A scoping review.

Based on the theory of structural vulnerability, this study systematically examines the characteristics and underlying mechanisms shaping information needs among families of older adults with special healthcare needs in disaster contexts, providing a theoretical foundation for developing a family-system collaborative disaster information support system. In this scoping review, we systematically searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang Data, VIP Database, and the Chinese Biomedical Literature Database from inception to De

Envisioning family, but where? Parenthood-related geographic preferences among childless LGB and heterosexual adults in Ecuador.

INTRODUCTION: Research on parenthood aspirations among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) adults has expanded, yet little is known about the geographic contexts in which parenthood is envisioned, particularly in the Global South. This question has practical relevance because unequal legal recognition, social acceptance, economic opportunity, and personal safety may make the exercise of family formation rights partly contingent on mobility. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional convergent mixed-methods survey, we examined parenthood-related geographic preferences among 184 childless cisgender adults

Transgender and non-binary adults' recommendations for relational, couple, marriage and family therapy: A Canadian qualitative study.

OBJECTIVE: Transgender and non-binary (TNB) individuals experience elevated mental health risks related to minority stress and marginalization. Although relational, couple, marriage and family therapy (RCMFT) services may support TNB clients, limited existing studies have examined how RCMFT interventions may be adapted to meet their needs. The present study explored TNB adults' recommendations for improving therapeutic interventions in RCMFT in Canada. METHODS: Twelve TNB adults across Canada were recruited through snowball sampling and community-based advertising. Semi-structured interviews

Evaluation of Family History of Diabetes and the Development of Cystic Fibrosis-Related Diabetes in a Clinical Cystic Fibrosis Cohort.

OBJECTIVES: Knowledge about risk factors for cystic fibrosis (CF) related diabetes (CFRD) are incomplete. Age, lower body mass index (BMI), female sex, pancreatic insufficiency (PI), cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) genotype severity and diabetes family history (FH) increase the risk. Pre-CFTR modulator studies depended on small samples and family-reported survey data. We evaluated clinically collected family history from a modulator-treated CF cohort. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, single-center observation utilizing clinician-collected, diabetes FH and age,

Familial SLC29A3-related histiocytosis with presumed choroidal infiltration: expanding the spectrum of histiocytosis-lymphadenopathy plus syndrome.

H syndrome (HS) is a rare autosomal recessive histiocytosis caused by biallelic mutations of the SLC29A3 gene. Ophthalmological involvement is not typical in HS, but is a known manifestation of non-Langerhans histiocytoses. We report two adult siblings with genetically confirmed HS who developed bilateral choroidal infiltration, expanding the phenotypic spectrum of SLC29A3-related histiocytosis. The first case was a woman with a history of HS who presented with progressive visual loss and choroidal lesions on imaging. Systemic findings and histological analyses confirmed non-Langerhans histioc

Recurrent Encephalopathy as a Form of Presentation of Transport Protein Particle Complex 11-Related Disease: A Family Matter.

BACKGROUND: Transport protein particle complex 11 (TRAPPC11)-related disease, with autosomal recessive inheritance, exhibits a multisystemic involvement that goes widely beyond muscle weakness. Poor growth, psychomotor development delay, intellectual disability, microcephaly, ophthalmic involvement, and movement disorders are some of the typical features. Elevated serum creatine kinase levels are present in all previously reported TRAPPC11 c.1278+5G > A variant cases. METHODS: Clinical characterization of three siblings from a Roma family with TRAPPC11-related disease, all harboring a homozyg

KLK11-Related Disorder of Cornification Presenting as Inflammatory Skin Disease: A Familial Case Report and Literature Review.

Mendelian disorders of cornification (MeDoC) are a group of heterogeneous inherited skin disorders characterized by hyperkeratosis or scaling. Clinical assessment and skin biopsy are primarily used to differentiate MeDoC from overlapping diseases, including inflammatory skin diseases, and to identify the specific type of MeDoC; however, the results can sometimes be inconclusive. We present two individuals from a family who were initially misdiagnosed with familial pityriasis rubra pilaris, however clinical exome sequencing revealed a likely pathogenic variant in KLK11, a gene recently identifi

Case report: A young man with non-rapid eye movement parasomnias in a KCNT1-related epilepsy family.

Differentiating between non-rapid eye movement (NREM) parasomnias and sleep-related hypermotor epilepsy (SHE) is challenging, as they exhibit similar episodes during sleep. A relatively high prevalence of NREM parasomnias has been detected in families with SHE. However, the common pathophysiologic mechanism is not completely clear. There have been no previous reports of KCNT1-related SHE combined with NREM parasomnias. In this report, we describe a 17 years-old male patient from a KCNT1 mutation family who exhibited complex abnormal behaviors during sleep, which have been confirmed as epilepti

Investigating the Health and Health-Related Quality of Life Impacts of the Criminal Legal System on Families: A Scoping Review.

A scoping review was conducted to present the state of the science regarding the health and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) effects of having a family member in contact with the criminal legal system (CLS). The review examined how the following have been studied: 1) types of family relationships, 2) the point of CLS contact, 3) mental health outcomes, 4) physical health outcomes, and 5) HRQOL outcomes. The final sample of 40 studies was largely secondary analyses of datasets (93%; n=37) that investigated a parent-child relationship (78%; n=31). Incarceration was the most frequently meas…
