Assessment and management of pathological and problem gambling among older adults.

The incidence of gambling among older adults has risen significantly over the last decade. Pathological and problem gambling disorders among older adults have devastating consequences including stress, alcohol abuse, loss of income and assets, treatment nonadherence, malnutrition, safety risks related to associated alcohol usage and financial losses, and increased psychiatric problems such as depression. This article reviews the theoretical frameworks and literature concerning gambling incidence, prevalence, behavior, diagnostic tools and interventional strategies for older adults, as well as

Is it ethical to use Mechanical Turk for behavioral research? Relevant data from a representative survey of MTurk participants and wages.

To understand human behavior, social scientists need people and data. In the last decade, Amazon's Mechanical Turk (MTurk) emerged as a flexible, affordable, and reliable source of human participants and was widely adopted by academics. Yet despite MTurk's utility, some have questioned whether researchers should continue using the platform on ethical grounds. The brunt of their concern is that people on MTurk are financially insecure, subject to abuse, and earn inhumane wages. We investigated these issues with two representative probability surveys of the U.S. MTurk population (N = 4094). The

Dentists' Stress During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Repeated Cross-Sectional Study.

OBJECTIVES: Although studies have revealed that dentists' mental health was initially affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, there are no reports on how this notion has evolved during the pandemic years. The aim of this study therefore was to compare Thai dentists' stress prevalence and levels due to the pandemic over a three period of the pandemic, 2020, 2021, and 2022. The associated risk and protective factors were also investigated. METHODS: A questionnaire was distributed to Thai dentists via social media, that is, Facebook pages and Line groups, from April 24 through May 5, 2020, June 10 th

Advanced Glycation End Products and Genetic Polymorphism in the Pathogenesis of Microvascular Complications in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Narrative Review.

Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus often experience microvascular complications, including diabetic retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy. Despite advances in glucose-lowering treatments, these complications remain a significant clinical and financial burden worldwide. Their pathogenesis is influenced by genetic polymorphism and advanced glycation end products (AGEs). Chronic metabolic stress leads to the formation of AGEs via oxidative and nonenzymatic glycation. AGEs bind to the AGE receptor (RAGE) and actively cause microvascular damage. This occurs through endothelial dysfunction, a

Low financial well-being and mature adults' ecological momentary mood: a pathway to development of depression?

OBJECTIVES: Poverty and poor financial functioning are risk factors for depression, but risk mechanisms are incompletely understood. The current study tested a model in which low financial well-being (FWB) functions as a chronic stressor, increasing emotional distress during daily life, the cumulative burden of which leads to increases in depressive symptomatology. METHOD: In the Understanding America Study, adults aged 50-85 years in the United States (N = 706) completed measures of FWB and depressive symptoms twice over a two-year period. Between these assessments, participants completed up

The Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction Conundrum-Redefining the Problem and Finding Common Ground?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) or diastolic heart failure (DHF) makes up more than half of all congestive heart failure presentations (CHF). With an ageing population, the case load and the financial burden is projected to increase, even to epidemic proportions. CHF hospitalizations add too much of the financial and infrastructure strain. Unlike systolic heart failure (SHF), much is still either uncertain or unknown. Specifically, in epidemiology, the disease burden is established; however, risk factors and pathophysiological associations are less cle

Commentary on: Social media use, mental health, and suicide-related outcomes in Russian women: A cross-sectional comparison between two age groups.

Brailovskaia et al. identified problematic social media use as a partial mediator between daily stress and suicide-related outcomes and found that positive mental health weakened the association between problematic social media use and such outcomes. This commentary argues that the moderating role of positive mental health warrants greater attention because it points to a preventive strategy beyond reducing problematic online engagement. Strengthening emotional, psychological, and social well-being may buffer individuals from the effects of stress and maladaptive digital behaviors, particularl

Associations of multiple dimensions of socioeconomic status with adverse pregnancy outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Low maternal socioeconomic status (SES) has been associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs). However, the heterogeneity of SES measures used across studies precludes a clear understanding of what exposures underlie these associations. That knowledge is essential for designing effective strategies to reduce socioeconomic disparities in perinatal health. Our objective was to examine which SES dimensions are most predictive of APOs and represent the greatest opportunity for interventions to improve perinatal health equity. STUDY DESIGN: Stress, Pregnancy, and Health study part

[Burden of caregivers caring for persons with dementia].

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other dementias are common disorders in the elderly. Most AD patients are cared for at home by family members. Caregiving stress often leads to problems in care givers' mental and physical health. Certain factors predict caregivers' distress, such as the presence of patient behavioral problems, the nature of the caregivers' social support and ability to cope with difficult situations. The term "caregiver burden" is used to refer to the physical, psychological or emotional, social and financial problems that can be experienced by family members caring for impaired o

Higher multiple births: socio-economic implications in a developing nation.

A case of successful quadruplet pregnancy followed from date of diagnosis, through delivery, and to the third year of life is presented. The emotional, social, and economic problems encountered by the parents and hospital personnel are examined with a detailed analysis of the financial burden placed on all parties. Individual, voluntary donations made at the time of delivery have proved insufficient to cover the care involved before, during, and after the birth of multiples. A more concrete commitment on the part of government in the form of legislation or subvention is suggested in order to e

Associations of psychosocial supports and stressors with cognition in midlife women.

OBJECTIVES: Psychosocial supports and stressors can influence neurocognitive function, but associations are understudied among women in midlife. METHODS: Among 492 parous women in the longitudinal Project Viva cohort, we surveyed several psychosocial supports and stressors in 2019-2022. At subsequent in-person visits (2022-2024) we performed the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), which assesses global cognition, and four scales of the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) that assess episodic memory, working memory, executive functioning, and attention. We examined a

Heat stress: a major threat to ruminant reproduction and mitigating strategies.

Stress is an external event or condition that puts pressure on a biological system. Heat stress is defined as the combination of internal and external factors acting on an animal to cause an increase in body temperature and elicit a physiological response. Heat stress is a set of conditions caused by overexposure to or overexertion at excess ambient temperature and leads to the inability of animals to dissipate enough heat to sustain homeostasis. Heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and cramps are among the symptoms. For the majority of mammalian species, including ruminants, heat stress has a negati

Stressful Life Events Precede Gambling Problems, and Continued Gambling Problems Exacerbate Stressful Life Events; A Life Course Calendar Study.

Do stressful life events cause gambling problems, or do gambling problems cause stressful life events? This study used a retrospective design to examine the temporal order of these associations. Specifically, the study employed a life course calendar in a self-directed online survey to minimise memory biases common in retrospective designs. A total of 1564 US respondents who had gambled at any point in their life (51.0% female, median age 46) were asked whether, for each year of their adult life, they had experienced each of eight stressful life events, and whether they had engaged in casual o

Granuloma inguinale of the cervix: a carcinoma look-alike.

Granuloma inguinale of the cervix presents as a proliferative growth and may mimic carcinoma. Over a 3 year period 18 patients with cervical granuloma inguinale were detected. Nine (50%) had a clinical diagnosis of carcinoma of the cervix on admission, five of whom had extensive investigations to exclude a malignancy. In communities where these two conditions are commonly seen it is recommended that granuloma inguinale be considered in young women with granulomatous lesions of the cervix, so as to avoid extensive and financially costly investigations, and unnecessary psychological stress for p
