The cornea of the Florida manatee is unique and unusual in its anatomy in that blood vessels have been found throughout. In all other animal species, this is considered a pathological condition impeding vision, and is usually caused by injury or trauma. From July 10 through August 4, 1980, five cases of St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) occurred in and near Fort Walton Beach on the Gulf Coast of northwest Florida. These were the first cases of SLE ever reported from the Florida panhandle. Hexachlorethane was evaluated as a fasciolicide in dairy cattle under field conditions. After treatment with hexachlorethane, Fasciola hepatica-infected cows had a significant (P = 0.05) average daily milk yield increase (90 to 120 days after treatment) of + 4.2 kg/day (+ 5.0 kg/day for single treatment and + 4.0 kg/day for double treatment) over daily yields of the previous lactation. We report a presumptive case of melioidosis caused by an atypical Burkholderia pseudomallei serotype in an American quarter horse in north-central Florida, USA, through archived formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded specimens dating back to 2006.
