Bacterial folliculitis, rosacea, and other common skin conditions have been linked to infestation by Demodex mites (human demodicosis). Currently, there is little guidance for treatment of inflammatory conditions associated with demodicosis. Thus, the objective of this review is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of treatments utilized for Demodex infestation. PubMed (1946 to January 2019) and Embase (1947 to January 2019) were searched with the following term combinations: Demodex mites, Demodex folliculitis, demodicosis, Demodex folliculorum, or Demodex brevis and articles evaluating treatm…

A 39-year-old woman, who had a history of recurrent oral and genital ulcerations and folliculitis and had had a low-grade fever since December 2003, consulted our hospital on February 5, 2004. Chest radiography and computed tomography (CT) showed multiple pulmonary abscess-like opacities. She was admitted to the Department of Respiratory Medicine and Allergology, Kinki University School of Medicine on February 19, 2004. A transbronchial lung biopsy showed nonspecific inflammation with lymphocytic infiltration. The patient was discharged after she showed improvement with antibiotic therapy. She…

A 41-year-old woman had multiple keratotic papules and nodules on the trunk and extremities four years after a bowel-bypass procedure for morbid obesity. The microscopic features were those of a perforating folliculitis. Serum vitamin A levels were extremely low. Oral vitamin A therapy resulted in dramatic improvement of the cutaneous lesions.

Patients with scabies may present with urticarial, eczematous or excoriated papules, eczematous patches or, occasionally, nodules. It is often difficult to differentiate scabies from eczema, folliculitis, drug eruption or lichen planus. The classically described burrows are often not seen. The scabies preparation, as described in this article, will aid in making the proper diagnosis.

Chronic suppurative diseases of the scalp, including acne keloidalis nuchae (AKN), dissecting cellulitis of the scalp (DCS), and folliculitis decalvans, are characterized by the presence of persistent abscesses, fistulas, and progressive scarring. The treatment of these conditions often presents a challenge, requiring both pharmacological and surgical interventions. We present herein two cases of long-standing, chronic, refractory suppurative scalp conditions that were successfully treated with surgical excision and subsequent skin grafting. The first case is that of a 53-year-old man with AKN…

Folliculitis barbae is a common condition of both infective and non-infectious aetiology. It most frequently presents as a superficial folliculitis, with fine pustules appearing at the opening of hair follicles in the beard area, often associated with shaving; known as Bockhart impetigo and usually due to infection caused by Staphylococcus aureus. If untreated, the infection and inflammation can progress, leading to a more deeply seated infection known as sycosis barbae. Perifollicular nodules, termed furuncles, may appear and when these are multiple and coalesce, a deep-seated, communicating,…

Perifolliculitis capitis abscedens et suffodiens is the least common of the three conditions included in the follicular occlusion triad. It is one of the causes of scarring alopecia in adult males. Clinically it has to be differentiated from other causes of folliculitis affecting the scalp. The histopathology is diagnostic. The treatment is prolonged and the clinical course is characterized by remissions and relapses.

Tinea capitis, folliculitis, seborrheic dermatitis, and pediculosis capitis are four common scalp conditions. Although tinea capitis and seborrheic dermatitis are found more commonly in patients with skin of color and highly textured hair, all of these conditions have special diagnostic or management considerations in these populations. This article reviews the diagnosis and management of these common scalp conditions.

Scarring alopecias are of diverse etiology and pathogenesis. They may be histologically classified as primary or secondary, depending on involvement of reticular dermis. The most important primary scarring alopecias include pseudopelade, lichen planopilaris, and diffuse scarring of the vertex in African-Americans. The most important secondary scarring alopecias include folliculitis decalvans and late-stage lupus erythematosus.

Persistent deep-seated folliculitis and impaired chemotaxis are described in a 24-year-old woman with situs inversus, bronchitis and sinusitis, i.e. the three characteristics of Kartagener's syndrome. While patients with chemotactic defects not associated with the syndrome often suffer from skin infections, to the best of our knowledge this is the first report of a Kartagener patient with cutaneous manifestations.

Oral isotretinoin has been in widespread use for more than three decades. It causes numerous side effects; skin and mucous membrane being commonly involved. Musculoskeletal adverse effects are also known to occur, but pelvic girdle myopathy is rarely reported. We report myopathy involving pelvic girdle muscles in a young male who received oral isotretinoin for folliculitis decalvans.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: There has been no validated tool for objectively quantifying the overall condition and characteristics of the scalp. This study aimed to establish and validate a new classification and scoring system for evaluating scalp conditions.
METHODS: The Scalp Photographic Index (SPI) using a trichoscope grades five features of scalp conditions (dryness, oiliness, erythema, folliculitis, and dandruff) on a score of 0-3. To evaluate the validity of SPI, SPI grading was performed by three experts on the scalps of 100 subjects along with a dermatologist's assessment of the scal…
