Critically Appraised Topic on Adverse Food Reactions of Companion Animals (8): Storage Mites in Commercial Pet foods.

BACKGROUND: Dogs with year-round atopic dermatitis are often sensitized to Dermatophagoides house dust mites (HDM). Storage mites (SM) are known to grow on cereal-rich foods. Tyrophagus SM can exacerbate clinical signs of allergy in laboratory dogs sensitized to HDM. Consequently, atopic dogs with high-levels of HDM-specific IgE are likely to have a flare of signs after eating a food contaminated with SM; the development of such flares would lead to a false positive diagnosis of food allergy. Herein, we reviewed the published evidence about the growth of SM on commercial dry pet foods. RESULT

Cadmium, lead, mercury and arsenic in animal feed and feed materials - trend analysis of monitoring results.

This study aimed to obtain insights into the presence of cadmium, lead, mercury and arsenic in feed materials and feed over time for the purpose of guiding national monitoring. Data from the Dutch feed monitoring programme and from representatives of the feed industry during the period 2007-13 were used. Data covered a variety of feed materials and compound feeds in the Netherlands. Trends in the percentage of samples that exceeded the maximum limit (ML) set by the European Commission, and trends in average, median and 90th percentile concentrations of each of these elements were investigated.

Strategy for the reduction of Trichloromethane residue levels in farm bulk milk.

High fat dairy products, such as butter and margarine can be contaminated during the milk production process with a residue called Trichloromethane (TCM), which results from the use of chlorine based detergent solutions. Although, TCM concentrations in Irish products are not at levels that are a public health issue, such contamination can cause marketing difficulties in countries to which Irish products are being exported. In an attempt to reduce such milk residues, a template procedure was developed, tried and tested on 43 farms (from 3 processing companies). This involved identifying farms w

The risk of lead contamination in bone broth diets.

The preparation and consumption of bone broth is being increasingly recommended to patients, for example as part of the gut and psychology syndrome (GAPS) diet for autism, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, dyslexia, dyspraxia, depression and schizophrenia, and as part of the paleolithic diet. However, bones are known to sequester the heavy metal lead, contamination with which is widespread throughout the modern environment. Such sequestered lead can then be mobilised from the bones. We therefore hypothesised that bone broth might carry a risk of being contaminated with lead. A small, b

Anatomical distribution of heavy metals in the scallop Pecten maximus.

This paper studied the anatomical distribution of mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), arsenic (As), silver (Ag), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) in the scallop Pecten maximus and the possible implications in terms of shellfish management. Six organs were analysed: mantle, gills, foot, digestive gland, kidney and gonad. On the basis of their anatomical distribution, two groups of metals were able to be distinguished: the first included Pb, Hg, Ni, Zn and Ag; and the second comprised the four other metals studied. The metals in the first group preferentially accumulated

Survey of butyltin compounds in 12 types of foods collected in China.

Twelve representative food types including beans, fruit, vegetables, fish, meat, potatoes, sugar, beverages, alcohol, eggs, milk and corn were collected from four districts in China for the analysis of butyltin compounds. The hyphenated system of capillary gas chromatography-flame photometric detector using quartz surface-induced tin emission was used to measure proyylated butyltins in various samples. Low levels (ng g(-1)) of butyltin compounds were found in some samples and possible sources of contamination and their significance are discussed.

Volatiles produced by microorganisms isolated from refrigerated chicken at spoilage.

Volatile components present at spoilage of refrigerated chicken breasts were identified using high-vacuum-low-temperature distillation techniques followed by analysis with combined temperature-programmed gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. A comparison was made of the compounds detected from both irradiated and non-irradiated muscle stored at 2 and 10 degrees C under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Isolates were randomly selected from the spoiled poultry, identified, and evaluated for their ability to produce volatile spoilage noted when grown on radiation-sterilized chicken. Seve

Hazard of Staphylococcal Enterotoxins in Food and Promising Strategies for Natural Products against Virulence.

Staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs) secreted by Staphylococcus aureus frequently contaminate food and cause serious foodborne diseases but are ignored during food processing and even cold-chain storage. Notably, SEs are stable and resistant to harsh sterilization environments, which can induce more serious hazards to public health than the bacterium itself. Therefore, it is necessary to develop promising strategies to control SE contamination in food and improve food safety. Natural products not only have various pharmaceutical properties, such as antimicrobial and antitoxin activities, but they

An exploratory investigation of the risk of pathogenic contamination at selected New Jersey skilled nursing and assisted living residences.

Elderly populations are vulnerable and generally have the highest incidence of morbidity related to foodborne illnesses and this problem may be aggravated in institutional or communal eating settings. The objective of this investigation was to examine the potential risk of food contamination in selected skilled nursing and assisted-living residences using bacteria indicator tests for Listeria spp., Salmonella spp. and E. coli. Of the 45 samples tested for Listeria, three (6.67 %) were found to be contaminated; Salmonella or E. coli contamination was not found in any of the samples. Reported in…

Staphylococcal enterotoxin and its rapid identification in foods by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay-based methodology.

The problem of Staphylococcus aureus and other species as contaminants in the food supply remains significant on a global level. Time and temperature abuse of a food product contaminated with enterotoxigenic staphylococci can result in formation of enterotoxin, which can produce foodborne illness when the product is ingested. Between 100 and 200 ng of enterotoxin can cause symptoms consistent with staphylococcal intoxication. Although humans are the primary reservoirs of contamination, animals, air, dust, and food contact surfaces can serve as vehicles in the transfer of this pathogen to the f

Emerging thermal and non-thermal technologies addressing Salmonella contamination in low-moisture spices and herbs.

Spices and herbs are vital flavoring agents in food. However, they are particularly vulnerable to microbial contamination primarily due to their open production environments and low water activity, which enhances microbial resistance to conventional pasteurization. In addition, traditional decontamination methods often struggle to balance microbial safety and product quality. This review aims to deliver valuable insights into innovative technologies designed for improving microbial safety and overall quality of spices and herbs while fostering advancements in the industry. This review comprehe

Marine Nematodes in Seafood: A Review of Food Safety Concerns, Advanced Detection Techniques, and Mitigation Strategies.

Marine nematodes are important food-borne parasites infecting many species of marine fish and cephalopods. This review provides a comprehensive discussion of the food safety concerns associated with marine nematodes in seafood, along with emerging methods for their detection. The potential prevention strategies for these seafood-borne parasites were also explored. According to the results, anisakiasis is the most serious nematode disease humans acquire from marine fish, chiefly due to Anisakis simplex larvae and, to a lesser degree, Pseudoterranova decipiens. Several analytical methods are emp

Towards a global method of Listeria challenge testing in food: diversity requires harmonization.

Challenge testing is a key method used to validate food safety control measures against Listeria monocytogenes, a pathogen of major public health concern due to its severe health risks. This review provides a comprehensive overview and comparative analysis of existing challenge test protocols for Listeria monocytogenes, aiming to support improvement and harmonization of international practices. We begin by outlining the role of challenge tests in categorizing foods and determining product shelf-life and their recognition within existing regulatory frameworks. The review then explores how chall

Decontamination Efficacy of Acetic Acid on Microbial Load in Fresh Produce from Open Markets in Khulna City, Bangladesh.

Vegetables are exceptionally nutrient-dense food sources essential to our diet and are mostly preferred to be consumed uncooked for maximum benefits. In Bangladesh, they are predominantly sold in outdoor markets. However, poor handling practices can lead to bacterial contamination with pathogenic microorganisms, increasing the risk of severe foodborne infections. This study aims to quantify the bacterial load of fresh vegetables and evaluate the impact of the antimicrobial agent acetic acid on the microbial quality of fresh produce available in the local markets. Following a completely randomi
