Decision-making in the dairy aisle: maximizing taste, health, cost and family considerations.

PURPOSE: To gain insight into the decision-making processes used by women when selecting dairy and dairy alternative foods, including examination of the role of bone health concerns. METHODS: Semi-structured, point-of-purchase interviews were conducted with a convenience sample of 30 female grocery shoppers. Constant comparative data analysis was used to generate themes on shoppers' decision-making processes. RESULTS: Women considered multiple issues in their dairy and dairy alternative food choice strategies: taste was most often associated with the fat and sugar content of foods; health co

Wheel running eliminates high-fat preference and enhances leptin signaling in the ventral tegmental area.

Voluntary wheel running (WR) is a form of physical activity in rodents that influences ingestive behavior. This study examined the effects of WR on dietary preference and the potential role of leptin in mediating these effects. In a two-diet choice paradigm in which both palatable high-fat (HF) food and standard laboratory chow were provided ad libitum, rats displayed a strong preference for the former and chose to eat almost exclusively the HF diet over chow in sedentary conditions. With free access to running wheels, however, rats exhibited no preference for the HF food and consumed equal gr

Impact of calorie labelling on consumers' wine preferences: a multi-country study.

A new regulatory framework for alcohol products' labelling has recently been implemented in the European Union, mandating calorie information on beverage bottles. Through a cross-country survey administered to consumers of alcoholic beverages (N = 4077) across four countries, namely: UK, USA, Italy, and Germany, the present study explores the impact of the caloric information on wine preferences. Results reveal that calorie content was correctly identified by about 50% of respondents (up to 60% in the UK, USA, and Italy), yet its impact on choices was minimal and inconsistent, with small coeff

Translating caregiver-identified neighborhood features into quantitative variables for statistical analyses of effects on child health.

PURPOSE: Neighborhoods are hypothesized to affect weight-related outcomes in part through their influence on household food choices, but quantitative study findings have been mixed. This may reflect mismatch between variables analyzed and residents' experiences. Our objective was to identify quantitative variables corresponding to neighborhood features caregivers of young children find important for families' food choices. METHODS: In 9 focus groups in English and Spanish among low-income caregivers (n = 51) of young children aged < 5 years in Philadelphia, PA, participants identified feature

Functional MRI of Challenging Food Choices: Forced Choice between Equally Liked High- and Low-Calorie Foods in the Absence of Hunger.

We are continuously exposed to food and during the day we make many food choices. These choices play an important role in the regulation of food intake and thereby in weight management. Therefore, it is important to obtain more insight into the mechanisms that underlie these choices. While several food choice functional MRI (fMRI) studies have been conducted, the effect of energy content on neural responses during food choice has, to our knowledge, not been investigated before. Our objective was to examine brain responses during food choices between equally liked high- and low-calorie foods in

Can overeating induce conditioned taste avoidance in previously food restricted rats?

While feeding is rewarding, the feeling of satiation has been theorized to have a mixed affect. Using a food restriction model of overeating we examined whether bingeing was capable of supporting conditioned taste avoidance (CTA). Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were maintained on either an ad lib (n=8) or restricted (50% of regular consumption; n=24) food access for 20 days. On Days 9, 14, and 19 all rats were given access to a novel saccharin solution in place of water, and two groups of food restricted rats were given access to either 100% of regular food consumption or ad lib food. Ad lib a

Neurophysiological pathways to obesity: below awareness and beyond individual control.

A global obesity epidemic is occurring simultaneously with ongoing increases in the availability and salience of food in the environment. Obesity is increasing across all socioeconomic groups and educational levels and occurs even among individuals with the highest levels of education and expertise in nutrition and related fields. Given these circumstances, it is plausible that excessive food consumption occurs in ways that defy personal insight or are below individual awareness. The current food environment stimulates automatic reflexive responses that enhance the desire to eat and increase c

Gut-brain nutrient sensing in food reward.

For the past several decades, vagal and hormonal gut-brain negative feedback signaling mechanisms that promote satiety and subsequent suppression of food intake have been explored. In addition, a separate positive feedback process termed "appetition," involving postoral signaling from the gut to the brain, has been shown to promote food intake and produce flavor-nutrient preference conditioning. Afferent fibers emerging from the vagus nerve form the main pathway by which information is relayed from the abdominal viscera to the hindbrain and eventually other higher brain regions involved in foo

Adaptive appetites for salted and unsalted food in rats: differential effects of sodium depletion, DOCA, and dehydration.

Most ingested sodium is contained in food. The aim was to investigate whether sodium depletion, dehydration, or DOCA alters intakes of salted and unsalted foods by rats given choices of two foods: salted (0.2-0.5% Na) and unsalted food containing either similar or different other dietary components. Diuretic-induced (furosemide or acetazolamide, two treatments on successive days) sodium depletion always caused pronounced falls in intake of unsalted food within 24 h, continuing at least another 2 days (e.g., 20.9 ± 1.6 pretreatment to 14.8 ± 1.2, 10.6 ± 1.5, and 14.3 ± 1.3 g/day for 3 days of d

Mendelian randomization identifies genetically predicted calorie dietary preference as causal risk factors for cancer.

BACKGROUND: Calorie preference refers to an individual's systematic inclination toward selecting foods based on their caloric density. The causal impact of dietary calorie preference on cancer development remains uncertain. METHODS: In this study, data on dietary calorie preference were sourced from a large-scale genome-wide association study (GWAS) database of food liking, while information on 18 cancer types was obtained from Finger R9 database. Two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was conducted to assess the causal effects of Calorie Dietary Liking on 18 types of cancers. The i

Pharmacoeconomic issues in onychomycosis.

BACKGROUND: Several anatomical studies provide evidence that green turtles (Chelonia mydas) possess the necessary anatomy for colour vision. Behavioural experiments have previously been conducted with newly emerged hatchlings, concluding that they are attracted to shorter wavelengths compared to longer wavelengths within a terrestrial environment, suggesting a possible attraction towards blue. This paper assessed the colour vision of hatchlings within an aquatic environment, and investigated whether the attraction for shorter wavelengths remains consistent within water, whether the colour satu

Vitamin A-fortified milk increases total body vitamin A stores in Mexican preschoolers.

Vitamin A (VA) deficiency (VAD) continues to be a major nutritional problem in developing countries, including Central America. In Mexico, milk is a well-accepted vehicle for the administration of micronutrients, including VA, to preschoolers. Thus, we conducted a randomized, controlled, clinical trial to investigate the efficacy of daily consumption of 250 mL of VA-fortified milk (which provided 196 retinol equivalents/d) for 3 mo on VA stores in mildly to moderately VAD (serum retinol concentration 0.35-0.7 μmol/L) preschoolers who were not enrolled in a food assistance program. Brain activity in response to food images in patients with irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia.

BACKGROUND: Functional dyspepsia (FD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are caused and exacerbated by consumption of fatty foods. However, no study has evaluated brain activity in response to food images in patients with disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI). This study aimed to compare food preference and brain activity when viewing food images between patients with DGBI and healthy controls. METHODS: FD and IBS were diagnosed using the ROME IV criteria. Food preference was assessed using a visual analog scale (VAS). Brain activity in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in response to food imag

Nutritional profiling of foods for Phenylketonuria.

A phenylalanine (Phe)-restricted diet is the only effective treatment in patients with classical phenylketonuria (PKU) in Latvia. This study analysed the protein and Phe content of 28 foods, including some Latvian-specific foods, aiming to expand the range of foods given to the Latvian PKU population. After consultation with Latvian parents and patients a list of preferred foods for analysis was collated. Preference was given to local foods and products were no or limited information about protein and Phe content was available. All food samples were collected from November 2023 until May 2024.
