Dorsal fracture-dislocations of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint, often accompanied by palmar lip fractures, are commonly seen in hand trauma. Management of these fractures requires restoring joint congruity and stability while allowing for early mobilisation. This case report discusses the successful use of a hemi-hamate autograft for reconstruction of the base of the middle phalanx in a young male patient with a severe dorsal PIP joint fracture-dislocation. The results demonstrate a promising technique for joint restoration with minimal functional impairment and excellent postoperati

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect that associated glenohumeral dislocations have on outcomes following surgical treatment of proximal humerus fractures (PHFs).
METHODS: This institutional review board-approved study reports on 301 patients who underwent operative treatment for PHFs at an academic medical center from January 2006 to January 2023. Fractures were classified according to the Neer system. Patients were separated into 2 cohorts based on whether a glenohumeral dislocation was present at the time of initial injury. Outcomes measured included the Disabil

Tibial shaft fractures are the most common type of long bone fracture, frequently associated with high-energy traumas such as traffic accidents, which carry a high mortality rate in Colombia. The combination of an open tibial shaft fracture with knee and proximal tibiofibular joint dislocation is extremely rare. The presented case involves these injuries, which were managed surgically in a single-stage with a follow-up of six months and good functional outcomes. Intramedullary nailing of the tibia was performed using an extra-articular, extra-synovial, semi-extended technique, which optimized

Bosworth fracture-dislocation presents a challenge in ankle joint injuries owing to its irreducible nature, requiring open reduction in most cases. Reports on successful outcomes following closed reduction are limited, necessitating exploration into alternative treatment approaches. Herein, we report a case of Bosworth fracture-dislocation in a 39-year-old man, with radiographic evidence of posterior displacement of the distal portion of the proximal fibular fragment incarcerated behind the tibia. Closed reduction was attempted with the patient's knee flexed at 90°, employing gradual traction,

Poor functional outcomes after hemiarthroplasty for proximal humerus fractures are common, yet revision surgery is relatively rare. Arthroscopic treatment for postoperative stiffness can be considered in the setting of functional limits to glenohumeral range of motion impacting activities of daily living after adequate conservative treatment with physical therapy and in the setting of healed, well-positioned tuberosities and humeral components. This Technical Note illustrates a stepwise approach to an arthroscopic lysis of adhesions and capsular release for the treatment of arthrofibrosis of t

STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical presentation, mechanism of injury, patients' characteristics, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of traumatic posterior atlantoaxial dislocation with fracture (TPAD).
BACKGROUND: TPAD is an extremely rare entity, with a limited number of cases reported in the literature. Although rare, a thorough understanding of the pathogenesis and management of such cases is required due to the high risk of spinal cord compression and the severity of neurological deficits. We conducted a systematic review of all cases of TPAD with fr

Bilateral posterior fracture-dislocation of the shoulder is an uncommon injury pattern usually caused by epileptic seizures. The cause of the seizure activity remains unknown in most cases, although the injury has been associated with several conditions. A 59-year-old man with uncontrolled hypertension presented with new-onset generalized tonic-clonic seizures. He was diagnosed with uremic encephalopathy and bilateral posterior fracture-dislocation of his shoulders. His medical condition required stabilization leading to a delay in definitive surgery and a subsequent poor outcome. This case hi

Posterior fracture-dislocations of the shoulder are exceedingly rare orthopedic injuries. The management of these rare and complex injuries can be challenging from initial presentation through definitive management. Timely diagnosis of these injuries is critical to prevent devastating complications, yet the diagnosis is often delayed. Delays in surgery and poor fracture reduction are associated with a high risk of complications such as avascular necrosis. Additionally, these injuries have the potential to be irreducible. This may occur secondary to osteochondral humeral defects, soft tissue in

PURPOSE: To describe the management of the discovery of a retropharyngeal carotid artery in the context of a cervical dislocation.
DESCRIPTION OF THE CASE: A 68-year-old female presented acute neck pain and incomplete tetraplegia following a fall on the stairs. Radiographs, contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance of the cervical spine revealed a C5-C6 bi-articular dislocation. A detailed preoperative assessment of the images discovered a medialization of the left common carotid artery. An external reduction and a left anterior cervical approach allowed a careful mana

INTRODUCTION: Hip arthroplasty is the treatment of choice for displaced femoral neck fractures among the older population. The hip prosthesis dislocation is one of the most pointed potential complications after hip arthroplasty, but there is a lack of updated information on the effect of dislocation on the survival of older hip fracture patients so treated by hip hemiarthroplasty. We aim to evaluate the standalone effect of hip prosthesis dislocation after hip fracture hemiarthroplasty on patients' survival outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Spine fractures combined with sternal injury are most commonly occur in the thoracic region. Lower cervical and thoracolumbar injuries have also been reported, especially for the patients with manubriosternal dislocation. The type of spine injury is easily recognized in initial presentation, but we may miss the sternal fracture and manubriosternal dislocation.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 23-year-old male patient complained with chest, right ankle, and lumbar pain after a fall at ground level, with diagnosis of right distal tibial fracture, sternal fracture, calcaneus fracture, and L2 ver

Open ankle dislocation without an associated fracture is an extremely rare injury [1]. We present a case of a 17-years old male who sustained a serious injury of his right ankle during jumping downstairs. He twisted his ankle and sustained an open posteromedial dislocation of his right ankle, without an associated malleolar fracture. The treatment consisted of wound debridement and irrigation open relocation with repair of anterior talo-fibular ligament, and primary closure of the skin post operatively the limb was immobilised in short leg cast for six weeks in a neutral position allowing part

Shoulder fracture-dislocations are uncommon. Those associated with intrathoracic dislocation are very rare conditions, resulting from high-energy trauma; usually, the affected limb is in an abduction position. In Brazil, there is only one report of a teenager with displacement of the epiphysis into the chest cavity; the present is the first adult patient report of intrathoracic dislocation of the humerus. The authors present the case of a patient female, aged 56 years, who was hit by motorcycle and thrown approximately 5 meters away. She was rescued on site with thoracic, pelvic, and right upp

In fracture dislocations of the lumbar region, two anatomical facts can help preserve neurological damage in patients, when compared with trauma in the cervical or thoracic region. Firstly, the spinal cord in adults extends only to the lower edge of the first lumbar vertebra, and secondly, the large vertebral space in this region gives ample space for the roots of the cauda equine. As a result, the nerve injury may be minimal, because the nerve roots in this region are accommodated in a larger area, with less content and space. This study presents the case of a 48-year-old male, a construction…
