This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of applying thoracoscope combined with internal support system of chest wall (ISSW) in minimally invasive internal fixation for rib fracture on patients with multiple rib fractures. A total of 84 patients undergoing open reduction and internal fixation for rib fracture from January 2017 to December 2017 in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Tianjin Hospital were selected into the study, and retrospective analyses were carried out. The clinical data, pain score, operating time, intraoperative blood loss, indwelling time of thoracic tube, to

BACKGROUND: Supracondylar humerus fractures (SCHF) in adolescents transitioning to skeletal maturity are less common, and literature on the management of complex cases with open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) is limited. The objective of this study was to retrospectively evaluate SCHFs treated with ORIF at a single tertiary pediatric center.
METHODS: Patients of ages 7-18 who received ORIF between 2015 and 2024 for SCHF with intercondylar extension (T-type; OTA/AO 13-E/4.2) or extraarticular SCHF (eSCHF; OTA/AO 13-M/3.1, 13/E/1.1) were included. Patients treated with percutaneous pinning

Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of distal radius fractures (DRF) is a common procedure performed by hand surgeons. Complications include, but are not limited to, failure/loss of reduction, improper positioning of hardware, and nerve or tendon injury. Although uncommon, these risks should be considered when choosing a surgical technique. In this article, we present a novel dorsal compression reduction technique (DCRT) using a Weber clamp and surgical towel for ORIF of DRFs. The DCRT maintains efficacy and efficiency and improves safety by minimizing the risks of penetrating skin or

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of early internal fixation combined with free anterolateral thigh perforator flap (ALTPF) transplantation in the treatment of open ankle fracture-dislocation.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on the clinical data of 13 patients with open ankle fracture-dislocation who were admitted and met the inclusion criteria between January 2021 and May 2024. Among them, there were 9 males and 4 females, with the ages ranging from 23 to 61 years (mean, 45.3 years). Fracture types included 5 cases of simple medial or lateral malleolar fracture-disloca

BACKGROUND: In post-traumatic cubitus varus osteotomy, conventional internal fixation methods typically involve the use of Kirschner wires (K-wires). Nevertheless, with advancements in medical technology and a growing demand for robust internal fixation, surgeons are increasingly opting for cannulated screws. Despite this trend, controversy remains regarding whether cannulated screws are superior to K-wires, particularly in pediatric patients with open epiphyses. This study aimed to compare the clinical treatment outcomes and complications of K-wires and cannulated screws as internal fixation

BACKGROUND: A coracoid process fracture combined with an acromioclavicular (AC) joint dislocation is an uncommon injury that typically causes significant pain and limits shoulder movement. Open reduction and internal fixation have been the traditional treatment approach. However, arthroscopic techniques are emerging as a promising alternative for managing these injuries.
CASE REPRESENTATION: A 35-year-old woman presented with right shoulder pain following an accidental fall. Imaging studies revealed a coracoid process fracture along with an AC joint dislocation. The fracture was classified as

The stiffness of an ideal fracture internal fixation implant should have a time-varying performance, so that the fracture can generate reasonable mechanical stimulation at different healing stages, and biodegradable materials meet this performance. A topology optimization design method for composite structures of fracture internal fixation implants with time-varying stiffness is proposed, considering the time-dependent degradation process of materials. Using relative density and degradation residual rate to describe the distribution and degradation state of two materials with different degrada

BACKGROUND: How to perform minimally-invasive surgery on Tile C pelvic fractures is very difficult, and it is also a hot topic in orthopedic trauma research. We applied minimally-invasive treatment using an anterior internal fixator combined with sacroiliac screws.
OBJECTIVES: To compare the biomechanical properties of different fixation models in pelvic facture specimens, using an internal fixation system or a steel plate combined with sacroiliac screws.
METHODS: Sixteen fresh adult cadaver pelvic specimens were randomly separated into four groups named A, B, C, and D. The four groups were

CASE: Patellar fractures after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction with a bone-patellar-tendon-bone (BPTB) autograft are a rare complication with a reported incidence of 0.2% to 2.3%. Treatment has previously been nonoperative splinting, lag screws, or a tension-band construct. We present the case of a 14-year-old adolescent girl who suffered a comminuted patella fracture 4 weeks after an ACL reconstruction using a BPTB autograft who subsequently underwent successful operative fixation through a novel technique with the use of a maxillofacial plate and screw system.

BACKGROUND: Due to the complexity of distal humerusfractures and often poor bone quality in elderly patients, these entities remain a challenge. However, because of a high rate of complications related to total elbow prostheses, reconstruction of distal humerus fractures should still be considered a therapeutic option, also in the elderly patient. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the clinical outcomes after open reduction and internal fixation and to evaluate whether the results justify reconstruction even in elderly patients. We hypothesized that despite advanced age, reaso

A displaced avulsion fracture at the tibial attachment of the posterior cruciate ligament is considered an indication for surgical reduction and internal fixation because nonunion and remaining posterior instability of the knee are common consequences of conservative treatment. The problems with standard open surgical techniques are that they are relatively invasive despite the limited operative field and it is impossible to explore intra-articular lesions by the posterior approach. An arthroscopic procedure has the advantage of being minimally invasive and allowing the surgeon to detect and t

Humerus is the long bone second-most commonly affected by metastases. An impending pathologic humeral fracture requires rigid surgical stabilization to prevent it from fully fracturing. In the present study, we report a case of a 71-year-old male patient with a visual analog score of 10 (indicating extreme pain) and an impending pathologic fracture that allowed for combined treatment with percutaneous microwave ablation and simultaneous injection of bone cement during Kirschner wire insertion. The procedure was performed successfully with no complications. The patient reported pain relief and

Background: Unstable intra-articular proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint fracture-dislocations present a difficult problem that requires congruous joint reduction and stable internal fixation or distraction. Though fractures with limited articular involvement may be treated successfully with less invasive procedures, fracture-dislocations with a volar shear component may benefit from joint reduction with subchondral support for maintenance of stability. The purpose of this article is to describe a volar transverse plate and screw technique and report the short-term postoperative results. Meth

The degree of femoral neck collapse that occurred after 519 patients with an intracapsular hip fracture treated by internal fixation with a Targon FN implant was measured. Mean femoral neck collapse was 8.0mm and this was increased for displaced fractures in comparison to undisplaced fractures (9.5mm versus 5.9mm, p<0.0001) and for those patients that subsequently developed fracture healing complications (11.6mm versus 7.1mm, p<0.0001). At one year from injury femoral neck collapse in excess of 15mm was associated with an increase in the degree of residual pain (p=0.01). A clear relationship b
