Correcting misperceived norms: An integrated intervention to prevent adolescent sexual violence and HIV in South Africa.

South Africa is a critical hotspot in the global fight against sexual violence and HIV. We report on the development of Schools Championing … ed underestimation of peer support for bystander intervention, overestimation of peer acceptance of gender-based violence, and underestimation of the extent to which peers would believe a survivor. No misalignment between self and peer HIV risk behaviours were identified. Gaps between actual and perceived behaviours/norms are important targets to correct in a behaviour …

Experiences of violence and abuse among transgender women in healthcare settings in Uganda: a community-engaged qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: People who identify as transgender have a gender identity or expression that differs from the sex they were assigned at birth. Because of this, transgender people may encounter widespread stigma, discrimination, and violence, including in medical facilities. Understanding how these phenomena manifest during healthcare interactions is crucial for enhancing health equity for transgender individuals. Therefore, this study explored the experiences of transgender-related stigma and violence among transgender individuals in Uganda. METHODS: The study used a community-based qualitative p

"Like a lots happened with my whole childhood": violence, trauma, and addiction in pregnant and postpartum women from Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.

BACKGROUND: Women living in poor and vulnerable neighbourhoods like Vancouver's Downtown Eastside (DTES) face multiple burdens related to the social determinants of health. Many of them struggle with addiction, are involved in the sex trade and experience homelessness and gender-based violence. Such evidence suggests that psychological trauma is also a common experience for these women. METHODS: The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore themes and subjective perspectives of trauma and gender-based violence in women who lived in an impoverished neighbourhood and struggled with subst…

Male Perpetrator Interventions for Domestic and Family Violence in the Indo-Pacific: A Scoping Review.

Across the Indo-Pacific, men are using violence against women at alarming rates, however current interventions in the region are failing to significantly reduce this violence. This scoping review aimed to identify how male perpetrators of domestic and family violence (DFV) were engaged in approaches to intervene with their use of violence across the Indo-Pacific region. The review also set out to examine the diversity in intervention frameworks to gain an understanding of the varied forms of engagement with men. This review used the Arksey and O'Malley method of scoping to search 9 interdiscip

Cumulative lifetime violence severity, social determinants and anxiety in a national sample of Canadian men.

BACKGROUND: Despite anxiety disorders being the ninth leading cause of disability and associated with social inequities, little attention has been given to how intersections among social determinants of health and chronic stressors such as cumulative lifetime violence affect the likelihood of experiencing anxiety disorders. Our purpose was to explore the relationships among cumulative lifetime violence severity as target and perpetrator, social determinants of health and generalized anxiety disorder in Canadian men. METHODS: Using a community sample of 592 Canadian men who self-identified as

Individual, community, and societal drivers of adolescent peer violence in Asella, Ethiopia: A school-based cross-sectional study utilizing the socio-ecological model.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent peer violence is a critical public health challenge in low- and middle-income countries. However, existing research in sub-Saharan Africa often focuses disproportionately on intimate partner violence or male-centered aggression, leaving a significant data gap regarding broader peer-to-peer dynamics in rapidly urbanizing Ethiopian settings. Furthermore, there is an urgent need for evidence that integrates psychosocial traits with environmental influences. This study addresses these gaps by utilizing the Socio-Ecological Model (SEM)-a framework that examines the interplay

Mental health needs of crime victims: epidemiology and outcomes.

This paper reviews epidemiological estimates of criminal victimization derived largely from nationally based studies in the United States. Origins of conflicting rates and prevalences are explained in terms of varying methodology. Risk factors for victimization, including age, race, gender, and disability, are also outlined, and derived from both national and geographically limited U.S.-based studies. Finally, mental health outcomes of violence are documented, with conclusions drawing on both national and regionally specific studies. These outcomes focus on posttraumatic stress disorder, but a

Prison Culture as Rape Supportive: Applying Importation and Deprivation Models to Examine Inmate Beliefs.

While research examining sexual violence in prison has increased over the past 15 years, relatively scant attention has been paid to rape supportive beliefs and the factors influencing inmate adherence to these beliefs. Given the demonstrated role from studies outside the prison context that rape supportive beliefs have on sexual violence, important parallels can be drawn from studying the inmate population. Importation and deprivation models have been used to explain how inmates adapt to prison life-whether attitudes and behaviors are imported from their lives outside prison or are developed

Women's and men's reports of past-year prevalence of intimate partner violence and rape and women's risk factors for intimate partner violence: A multicountry cross-sectional study in Asia and the Pacific.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the past-year prevalence of male-perpetrated intimate partner violence (IPV) and risk factors is essential for building evidence-based prevention and monitoring progress to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5.2, but so far, population-based research on this remains very limited. The objective of this study is to compare the population prevalence rates of past-year male-perpetrated IPV and nonpartner rape from women's and men's reports across 4 countries in Asia and the Pacific. A further objective is to describe the risk factors associated with women's experience of
