How population control of pests is modulated by density dependence: The perspective of genetic biocontrol.

Managing pest species relies critically on mechanisms that regulate population dynamics, particularly those factors that change with population size. These density-dependent factors can help or hinder control efforts and are especially relevant considering recent advances in genetic techniques that allow for precise manipulation of the timing and sex-specificity of population suppression. Despite this importance, density dependence is often poorly characterized owing to limited data and an incomplete understanding of organism development. To address this issue, we construct and analyze a mathe

Evolutionary Genetic Analysis of the Pyrazinamidase Gene in Seven Global Populations of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to identify the signatures of natural selection in the pyrazinamidase (pncA) gene to see if genetic adaptations by Darwinian natural selection have shaped genetic composition of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). METHODS: The present analyses were based on 209 DNA sequences (561 bp) of the pncA gene of the bacterial pathogen, Mtb from seven different counties (Peru, Pakistan, South Africa, Mexico, India, China, and Kuwait) endemic to tuberculosis (TB). Before conducting tests for Darwinian natural selection in the pncA gene, we conducted several tests for neutrality

Evaluation of common genetic risk factors for differentiated thyroid cancer in the Thai population.

Differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) is the most common endocrine malignancy. This disease includes papillary and follicular thyroid tumors, and accounts for the majority of thyroid cancer cases. Although both genetic and environmental variables contribute to the genesis of DTC, specific genetic variants in the Thai population remain to be fully understood. The present case-control study aimed to investigate six single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with DTC susceptibility that had previously been described in genome-wide association studies; namely, rs944289, rs2439302, rs966423

The Genetic Architecture of Parkinson's Disease in the AfrAbia Population: Current State and Future Perspectives.

Over 80% of genetic studies in the Parkinson's disease (PD) field have been conducted on individuals of European descent. There is a social and scientific imperative to understand the genetic basis of PD across global populations for therapeutic development and deployment. PD etiology is impacted by genetic and environmental factors that are variable by ancestry and region, emphasising the need for worldwide programs to gather large numbers of patients to identify novel candidate genes and risk loci involved in disease. Only a handful of documented genetic assessments have investigated familie

Age-Related Macular Degeneration and Its Genetic Risk: A Population-based Study.

PURPOSE: Specific genetic factors might serve as markers for risk stratification of AMD progression, but their association with key features of AMD has not been fully elucidated. Thus, we investigated the association between overall and pathway-specific genetic risk scores (GRS) and lead loci (ARMS2, CFH) with AMD stages and features of high-risk nonlate AMD, including reticular pseudodrusen (RPD) and large drusen area (LDA). METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional analysis of data from the Rhineland Study, a population-based study in Bonn, Germany. We included 4016 individuals aged 50 years

Clinical and genetic spectrum of factor XII deficiency in the Han population of East China.

BACKGROUND: Factor XII (FXII or F12) deficiency is a rare inherited disorder, typically lacking haemorrhagic symptoms. There is limited literature exists on FXII deficiency and mutations within the Chinese population. This study aimed to characterize the spectrum of F12 gene mutations in a Chinese cohort and to investigate the relationship between FXII mutations and clinical phenotypes. METHODS: Genetic and clinical data from 51 unrelated probands with FXII deficiency, along with their families, were meticulously collected and analysed. RESULTS: Genetic analysis revealed that 94.1% of proban

Unifying approaches from statistical genetics and phylogenetics for mapping phenotypes in structured populations.

In both statistical genetics and phylogenetics, a major goal is to identify correlations between genetic loci or other aspects of the phenotype or environment and a focal trait. In these two fields, there are sophisticated but disparate statistical traditions aimed at these tasks. The disconnect between their respective approaches is becoming untenable as questions in medicine, conservation biology, and evolutionary biology increasingly rely on integrating data from within and among species, and once-clear conceptual divisions are becoming increasingly blurred. To help bridge this divide, we d

Shared genetic risk between major orofacial cleft phenotypes in an African population.

Nonsyndromic orofacial clefts (NSOFCs) represent a large proportion (70%-80%) of all OFCs. They can be broadly categorized into nonsyndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NSCL/P) and nonsyndromic cleft palate only (NSCPO). Although NSCL/P and NSCPO are considered etiologically distinct, recent evidence suggests the presence of shared genetic risks. Thus, we investigated the genetic overlap between NSCL/P and NSCPO using African genome-wide association study (GWAS) data on NSOFCs. These data consist of 814 NSCL/P, 205 NSCPO cases, and 2159 unrelated controls. We generated common singl

Prevalence of Trehalase Enzymopathy Genetic Determinants in Siberian and Russian Far East Populations.

UNLABELLED: To date, it has been established that the patient's genotype plays a significant role in the formation of trehalase enzymopathy: the level of enzyme activity decreases when the G→A allele replacement occurs in the rs2276064 locus of the TREH gene. To assess the prevalence of trehalase deficiency, extensive population-based studies are needed. Clinical observations show that the reduced activity of bowel trehalase is more common in the Arctic than in European populations. The aim of this research was to analyze the frequency of the alleles and variants of trehalase gene (rs2276064 T

Deciphering the Effect of Different Genetic Variants on Hippocampal Subfield Volumes in the General Population.

The aim of this study was to disentangle the effects of various genetic factors on hippocampal subfield volumes using three different approaches: a biologically driven candidate gene approach, a hypothesis-free GWAS approach, and a polygenic approach, where AD risk alleles are combined with a polygenic risk score (PRS). The impact of these genetic factors was investigated in a large dementia-free general population cohort from the Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP, n = 1806). Analyses were performed using linear regression models adjusted for biological and environmental risk factors. Hippoca

Enhancing the interpretation of genetic observations in KCNQ1 in unselected populations: relevance to secondary findings.

AIMS: Rare variants in the KCNQ1 gene are found in the healthy population to a much greater extent than the prevalence of Long QT Syndrome type 1 (LQTS1). This observation creates challenges in the interpretation of KCNQ1 rare variants that may be identified as secondary findings in whole exome sequencing. This study sought to identify missense variants within sub-domains of the KCNQ1-encoded Kv7.1 potassium channel that would be highly predictive of disease in the context of secondary findings. METHODS AND RESULTS: We established a set of KCNQ1 variants reported in over 3700 patients with dia

Comparative analysis of the genetic structures of Kogia spp. populations in the western North Pacific.

The two Kogia species, the pygmy sperm whale (K. breviceps) and the dwarf sperm whale (K. sima), have similar morphological and biological features as well as diets. Both species are deep divers, and both have wide distributions from tropical to warm-temperate zones. Although K. breviceps is larger than K. sima, there are few reports of habitat differentiation between the two species. The distribution of K. breviceps is concentrated in higher-latitudes, and this species dives deeper than K. sima. We investigated whether these two species differ in their population structures in the western Nor

Prevalence of genetically determined trehalase deficiency in populations of Siberia and Russian Far East.

In order to be digested, the disaccharide trehalose needs to be cleaved by the trehalase enzyme. There were reports suggesting that trehalase deficiency was more common in high-latitude than in the temperate climate populations. New horizons were opened for the epidemiologic research of trehalase enzymopathy when it became clear that reduced trehalase activity is determined by the A allele of tTREH gene (rs2276064). The aim of this study was to analyze the frequencies of the trehalase gene alleles and genotypes among the indigenous peoples of Siberia and the Russian Far East. We genotyped 567

Genetic Association Studies of MICB and PLCE1 with Severity of Dengue in Indonesian and Taiwanese Populations.

Dengue is an arboviral disease that has spread globally and become a major public health concern. A small proportion of patients may progress from symptomatic dengue fever (DF) to dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) or dengue shock syndrome (DSS). Findings from a previous genome-wide association study (GWAS) demonstrated that variations in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I chain-related B (MICB) and the phospholipase C epsilon 1 (PLCE1) genes were related to DSS in a Vietnamese population. This study investigated associations of variations in MICB (rs3132468) and PLCE1 (rs3740360,
