Characterization of Listeria monocytogenes strains isolated from soil under organic carrot farming.

INTRODUCTION: Listeria monocytogenes are Gram-positive, non-spore-producing rods that are the etiological agent of listeriosis. L. monocytogenes is isolated from soil, water, sewage, rotting vegetation, and the main source of these rods for humans is food (fish, unpasteurized dairy products, or raw fruits and vegetables). In recent years, there has been an increase in consumer interest in healthy food, especially organically grown. The use of natural fertilizers during organic farming can be a source of pathogens, including L. monocytogenes in the soil and finally in vegetables and fruits. The

Ornithinibacillus liuyingii sp. nov.: a novel multidrug-resistant and potentially pathogenic bacterium isolated from Apodemus chevrieri lung tissue.

Ornithinibacillus liuyingii sp. nov. was proposed, with type strain 27F3T (= GDMCC 1.5626T = JCM 38003T) isolated from the lung of Apodemus chevrieri collected on the Guizhou Plateau, China. Phylogenetic distinctiveness from its closest relative, Ornithinibacillus scapharcae TW25T, was confirmed by 98.5% 16S rRNA gene similarity, 76.98% average nucleotide identity, and 21.9% digital DNA–DNA hybridization value. Phenotypically, strain 27F3T was characterized as a motile, rod-shaped bacterium exhibiting a Gram-stain-negative reaction, an atypical feature within the otherwise Gram-positive genus

Isolation and properties of an endo-β-mannanase-producing Bacillus sp. LX114 capable of degrading guar gum.

Endo-β-mannanase, catalyzing the random hydrolysis of β-1,4-mannosidic linkage in the backbone of (hetero) mannan, can increase feed conversion efficiency of animal feed or form functional mannanooligosaccharides. In this study, a gram-positive, straight-rod, facultative anaeorobic bacterium producing endo-β-mannanase was isolated from soil sample. The isolate only fermented glucose, galactose, sorbose, and raffinose to acid. The test in hydrogen sulfide production was positive. Combining the data acquired from phenotypic analysis and phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, thi

Listeria monocytogenes septicemia in foals: A case series (1986 to 2024).

Listeriosis is caused by Listeria monocytogenes, a Gram-positive, facultative anaerobic, intracellular rod bacterium that can infect a wide variety of species. Listeriosis occurs in a diverse range of domestic and wild animals but is most commonly a disease of ruminants. Clinical signs include meningoencephalitis, typhlocolitis, septic arthritis, and abortions. Listeriosis in horses has been reported in several countries but is an uncommon diagnosis. This report describes clinical, bacteriological, histopathological, and immunohistochemical findings in 6 foals with neonatal septicemia from whi

A Case of Cutibacterium acnes Pericardial Effusion After Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery.

Cutibacterium acnes is a gram-positive, anaerobic rod commonly found on the skin and mucosal membrane. It is mostly associated with its role in acne formation, but here we present a case of purulent pericarditis secondary to C. acnes after coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG). A 58-year-old male presented for CABG after a coronary angiogram showed severe multivessel disease. The procedure was performed successfully. He had minimal complications until postop day seven, when he developed a fever and hypoxia. The transthoracic echo (TTE) was largely unrevealing. Due to further declining st

Chronic cholecystitis from Raoultella planticola infection associated with adenomyomatous hyperplasia.

A 67-year-old woman presented with lower abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and fatigue. Computed tomography was suggestive of cholecystitis, but neither ultrasound nor magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography found evidence of cholecystitis or biliary ductal dilatation. The patient was started on piperacillin-tazobactam, and blood cultures revealed gram-negative-rod bacteremia. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy was performed and bile cultures grew Raoultella planticola susceptible to ciprofloxacin, which was identical to the speciation of her positive blood cultures. In addition, pathol

Identification of novel anthrax toxin countermeasures using in silico methods.

Anthrax is an acute infectious disease caused by the spore-forming, gram-positive, rod-shaped bacterium Bacillus anthracis. The anthrax toxin lethal factor (LF) is the primary anthrax toxin component responsible for cytotoxicity and host death and has been a heavily researched target for design of postexposure therapeutics in the event of a bioterror attack. Various computer-aided drug design methodologies have proven useful for pinpointing new antianthrax drug scaffolds, optimizing existing leads and probes, and elucidating key mechanisms of action. We present a selection of in silico virtual

Actinomyces dentalis sp. nov., from a human dental abscess.

A previously undescribed filamentous, beaded, Gram-positive, rod-shaped bacterium was isolated from pus of a human dental abscess. Based on its cellular morphology and the results of biochemical testing the organism was tentatively identified as a member of the genus Actinomyces, but it did not correspond to any currently recognized species of this genus. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequencing studies showed the bacterium represents a distinct subline within the genus Actinomyces, clustering within a group of species that includes Actinomyces bovis, the type species of the genus. Sequence diverg

Pathogenic Aeromonas hydrophila in Ornamental Neocaridina Shrimps: Biochemical Traits and Antibiotic Resistance.

Bacterial infections are increasingly recognised as a major threat to ornamental freshwater shrimp aquaculture. Diseased Neocaridina spp. displaying abnormal swimming, lethargy, hypoxia, cutaneous abrasions, dark-brown lesions, and occasional moulting were investigated. Pure cultures from moribund shrimp yielded Gram-negative, motile, catalase- and oxidase-positive rods producing hemolysis and resistant to vibriostatic agent O/129. Biochemical profiling (API 20E) identified all isolates (KRW1-KRW5) as Aeromonas hydrophila, clustering with A. hydrophila CECT 839 and A. bestiarum CECT 4227, whil

Turicibacter bilis sp. nov., a novel bacterium isolated from the chicken eggshell and swine ileum.

Three novel, anaerobic, Gram-positive bacteria were isolated from the eggshell of two separate white leghorn chicken flocks and the ileum of a healthy pig, and designated MMM721T, ISU324 and PIG517 respectively. Cells were pleomorphic and capable of forming long chains of rods or coccoid clusters. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequences identified these strains to be within the genus Turicibacter, of which only one species, Turicibacter sanguinis, has been formally described. However, whole genome sequencing of novel isolates returned a digital DNA-DNA hybridization value of 22.5

Bacteriology of infections in a rural tropical area of Kenya: isolates and antibiotic susceptibility.

No microbial data are available for rural tropical areas. Yet most people in Africa live in rural areas where the burdens of infectious diseases remain the primary cause for morbidity and mortality. A pilot study was done by culturing midstream urine from patient with dysuria (100 with Gram-negative fermentative rods), blood from patients with FUO (55/307 positive) and swabs from patients with infected wounds (29 with Staphylococcus aureus). Bacteria were identified and susceptibility tests were performed according to protocols. Klebsiella was the most common isolate from urine (48%). The over

Semiquantitative culture results and pathogenic significance of obligate anaerobes in peritonsillar abscesses.

We studied the bacteria in consecutive peritonsillar abscesses using semiquantitation of the primary culture findings and correlated the res … ss abundant than in untreated patients. The abundance of obligate anaerobes (specifically cocci and gram-positive rods) correlated to the severity of illness as defined by fever and short duration before hospitalization. With other groups of bacteria, no such correlation was found. The correlation was not explained by a difference between the antibiotic-treated and …

Necrotizing enterocolitis--a 5-year experience.

With the increased survival of very-low-birth-weight neonates, necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) represents one of the most frequent life-threatening conditions for this population. NEC was diagnosed on 24 occasions during a 5-year period (1977-81) at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Kaplan Hospital, Rehovot. These 24 NEC cases, confirmed by radiological, surgical or pathological findings, were analyzed in a retrospective study. The mean weight was 1,450 g and the mean gestational age 32 weeks. Only one of the affected infants was a full-term newborn. The mean age at onset of symptoms was 9.8 d

The mortality and pathology of HIV infection in a west African city.

BACKGROUND: HIV disease is epidemic in Africa, but associated mortality, underlying pathology and CD4+ T-lymphocyte counts have not previously been evaluated in a representative study. Such data help to determine the management of HIV-positive people. Both HIV-1 and HIV-2 infections are prevalent in Côte d'Ivoire, and the pathology of HIV-2 infection in Africa is unclear. METHODS: Consecutive adult medical admissions to a large city hospital in Côte d'Ivoire were studied in 1991, and a sample of HIV-positive deaths autopsied. RESULTS: Of 5401 patients evaluated, 50% were HIV-positive; 38% of
