Anaplasma phagocytophilum is an emerging, Gram-negative, obligate intracellular pathogen that is transmitted by a tick vector. Human infection ranges from asymptomatic to severe disease that can present with pancytopenia, multiorgan failure, and death. The aim of this systematic review is to analyze case reports and case series reported over the last two decades in peer-reviewed journals indexed in the Medline/PubMed database according to the PRISMA guidelines. We found 110 unique patients from 88 case reports and series. The most common mode of transmission was tick bite (60.9%), followed by

Adsorptive granulocyte and monocyte apheresis (GMA) is an extracorporeal treatment that selectively removes activated myeloid lineage leukocytes from peripheral blood. This technique consists of a column with cellulose acetate beads as absorptive leukocytapheresis carriers, and was initially used to treat ulcerative colitis. A literature search was conducted to extract recently published studies about the clinical efficacy of GMA in patients with different skin disorders, reporting information on demographics, clinical symptoms, treatment and clinical course. Dermatological diseases, in which

BACKGROUND: Human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA) is a systemic inflammatory response caused by the rickettsial bacterium Anaplasma phagocytophilum. Rhabdomyolysis and acute kidney injury (AKI) are rare complications of HGA. Here, we report a case of HGA concurrent with rhabdomyolysis and AKI in an elderly patient.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 84-year old woman with a medical history of hypertension was hospitalised after two days of fever, dizziness, whole body pain, and general weakness. Laboratory investigations showed severe thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, impaired renal function, and elevated car

BACKGROUND: Human granulocytic anaplasmosis, a tick-borne infection caused by Anaplasma phagocytophilum, has received scant attention, while scrub typhus, a mite-transmitted disease caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi, is the most common rickettsiosis in Taiwan. The clinical presentations of both diseases are characterized by undifferentiated fever, headache and malaise. Moreover, both pathogens have been detected in small mammals that serve as hosts for chiggers and ticks in the wild. The objective of the present study was to investigate whether human granulocytic anaplasmosis occurs in Taiwan.

INTRODUCTION: Alcoholic hepatitis (AH) is an acute-on-chronic inflammatory response affecting the liver. It has been recognized that white blood cells (WBCs) are involved in the pathogenesis and in the prognosis of AH. The aim of study was to use Adacolumn, which can selectively adsorb myeloid linage leucocytes (granulocytes and monocytes/macrophages) from the blood in the column and improve the clinical status of patients.
MATERIALS: Six patients with a diagnosis of AH were treated with Adacolumn granulocyte-apheresis therapy.

Granulocytic sarcoma is an extramedullary tumour consisting of malignant granulocytic precursor cells that is common among children with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). We report a case of orbital granulocytic sarcoma in an adult with relapsed undifferentiated AML-M0. It presented as bilateral medial canthal swellings. An incisional biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of granulocytic sarcoma. The swelling resolved with re-induction chemotherapy.

Granulocytic sarcoma (GS) is a rare extramedullary manifestation of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). GS may develop simultaneously to AML or as a relapse of leukemia, particularly following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant. Subperiosteal bone, lymph nodes and skin are commonly involved, whereas rhinopharyngeal involvement is less common, with only 14 cases reported in the literature. Due to its rarity, rhinopharyngeal GS may lead to diagnostic pitfalls, particularly when it is poorly differentiated or is without concomitant marrow involvement. Thus, immunohistochemical findings play

The CNS involvement of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is more commonly manifest as meningeal involvement. Rarely it may present as intravascular tumor aggregates called granulocytic sarcoma which presents as intracranial hemorrhage. We are presenting a case of intracranial, intra-parenchymal granulocytic sarcoma (other names: chloroma, extramedullary myeloblastoma), presenting as acute hemiplegia without cerebral hemorrhage.

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate a case series of granulocytic sarcoma of the head and neck found in the pediatric population and review long-term outcomes.
METHODS: A pathology database at a tertiary hospital was searched for patients with biopsy specimens from the head and neck diagnosed as granulocytic sarcoma.
RESULTS: There were 6 cases between 1992 and 2004 that met inclusion criteria. Subjects' age ranged from 22 months to 14 years old. In three cases, the patients were diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) based on biopsy results; 2 patients were already diagnosed with AML when diagno

Granulocytic sarcoma (GS) may be a presenting sign of myelogenous leukemia. Occasionally, an extramedullary neoplasm composed from myelocytic precursor cells occurs in patients without evidence of leukemia. Rarely, undiagnosed leukemia occurs initially manifesting with paralysis to spinal cord GS. We present a case report of 20-year-old girl with an undiagnosed leukemia, initially manifesting as paralysis. En bloc spondylectomy with chemotherapy postoperatively constituted the treatment of choice for this tumor. After two courses of chemotherapy, the patient made a good postoperative recovery

Granulocyte and monocyte adsorption apheresis (GCAP) is an extracorporeal circulation therapy that removes activated granulocytes and monocytes. GCAP was initially approved for the treatment of ulcerative colitis, which is attributed to activated granulocytes and macrophages that infiltrate the target tissues. Generalized pustular psoriasis (GPP) is also supposed to be caused by activated neutrophils. In this study, we treated two patients with refractory GPP by using GCAP. Patient 1, a 68-year-old woman who had liver cirrhosis, underwent seven GCAP sessions. Patient 2, a 26-year-old woman who…

FLIP is a well-established suppressor of death receptor-mediated apoptosis. To define its essential in vivo role in myeloid cells, we generated and characterized mice with Flip conditionally deleted in the myeloid lineage. Myeloid specific Flip-deficient mice exhibited growth retardation, premature death, and splenomegaly with altered architecture and extramedullary hematopoiesis. They also displayed a dramatic increase of circulating neutrophils and multiorgan neutrophil infiltration. In contrast, although circulating inflammatory monocytes were also significantly increased, macrophages in th

BACKGROUND: Granulocytic sarcoma (GS) is a form of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), also known as extramedullary myeloid tumor or chloroma. It forms a solid malignant tumor consisting of myelocytes or granulocytes and is typically located in bone while occurrence in other parts of the body is rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: We reported a 40-year-old male patient who had jaundice, highly elevated bilirubin, and a mass highly suspicious of pancreatic head carcinoma. We performed surgery and the pathology and immunohistochemistry suggested GS; however the blood test and the bone marrow infiltration showed…
