An idiopathic, asymmetrical oligoarthritis affecting young adults is prevalent in the tropical regions of Africa, Asia and Melanesia. A serological study was undertaken in 23 consecutive patients with polyarthritis. Each patient was assigned two paired control subjects. A standardized history, physical examination and investigations were performed. Acute and convalescent sera were examined for evidence of recent infection. The presence of HLA-B27 was determined. Twelve (52%) of the 23 patients had more than one of the clinical features of a reactive arthritis. No serological evidence was found

Kupffer cells play an important role in all alimentary tract infections. Their role in intestinal amoebiasis is not clear. A retrospective study was performed at Port Moresby General Hospital covering the period 1.1.81-31.3.86. There were 37 cases of hydatidiform mole, 2 of choriocarcinoma and 4 of metastasizing gestational trophoblastic disease of unknown histology, During the study period there were 35,630 deliveries in the same hospital. The incidence of hydatidiform mole was found to be 1:963 deliveries. Among the patients with hydatidiform mole 1 death was recorded whilst in the group with choriocarcinoma and unclassified disease there were 4 deaths. Groups of 22 steers grazed eight diverse environments in Papua New Guinea for one year. Haemoglobin, packed cell volume, MCHC, plasma albumen, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, copper and saliva sodium and potassium were measured; half of each group received cobalt supplements. The action of newly synthesised basic esters of alkoxy-substituted derivatives of phenylcarbamic acid was compared with that of procaine and trimecaine in the guinea-pig small intestine. Bombesin induced contraction and acetylcholine (ACh) release of the longitudinal muscle strip of the guinea pig antrum were examined using the standard organ bath technique and the superfusion system. Bombesin increased frequency and tonus of rhythmic contraction in a dose dependent manner (10(-10)M - 10(-7)M). Anti-gastric activity of metoclopramide was studied in guinea pigs using three different models of gastric ulceration. The effect of metoclopramide on gastric acidity was also studied. It was observed that metoclopramide affords protection against all types of experimentally induced gastric ulceration, without affecting the gastric acid secretion. The protective effect, therefore, is probably due to its ability to promote gastric drainage and to prevent the pyloric reflux, thus preventing corrosive effects of bile and acid on the stomach mucosa.

Guinea-pigs were infected intranasally with influenza A Hong Kong 68 (H3N2) virus. Infective particles were re-isolated from lung homogenates up to 3 days after inoculation and indicated local replication. The subsequent lung inflammatory stages were studied by light microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Lung alterations appeared after 24 h and intensified up to 7 days after virus inoculation, progressively decreasing until 3 weeks thereafter. An experimental disease could be serially propagated in the guinea pig by intracerebral inoculation of cerebrospinal fluid or brain suspensions from 8 patients with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). The disease, characterized by tremor, ataxia and convulsions, appeared after a long incubation period (370-420 days). Microscopic lesions and electron optic features were similar to those described in human CJD and in experimental CJD in the chimpanzee.

Because of the possibility that olivocochlear bundles may use acetylcholine as an inhibitory transmitter, we examined the cochlea of the guinea pig for cholinergic receptor binding sites. Binding of the potent muscarinic antagonist [3H]quinuclidinyl benzilate (3H-QNB) showed that the cochlea has sites with the pharmacological specificity of muscarinic cholinergic receptors. The skin sensitization potential of allyl methacrylate (AMA) was studied in Hartley albino guinea pigs. Two groups of guinea pigs (10 per compound) were subjected to repeated insult patch tests either with AMA or with dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB). All guinea pigs treated with DNCB (positive control) were sensitized. None of the guinea pigs treated with AMA exhibited any evidence of sensitization and no reactions attributable to AMA were elicited as a result of exposure during the insult phase of the patch test. Mg-deficient guinea pigs developed significantly increased hearing loss during 4 weeks of noise exposure [95 dB(A)] as compared to animals fed a Mg-rich diet. The hearing loss was negatively correlated to the Mg content of the perilymph (r = -0.86). Besides this auditory effect, there was a decrease of intracellular Mg and an increase of collagen in the myocardium, both of which were correlated to the hearing loss and caused by Mg deficiency and noise stress.

The sensitization of guinea-pigs with the mixture of meningococci and heterologous-cerebral tissue commonly induces the development of the typical clinical and pathomorphological picture of allergic encephalomyelitis. Unlike Mycobacterium tuberculosis and other acid-resistant bacterial and much like Bordetella pertussis, meningococci are capable of inducing allergic encephalomyelitis when introduced in mixture with oil without cerebral tissue. The vaccinal strain induces allergic encephalomyelitis with a more moderate course of the disease.
