Primary prevention in health care employees: a prospective intervention study with a 3-year training period.

Irritant contact dermatitis is a mayor problem in health care employees. Because educational programs have shown convincing success in certa … ifferent behaviour of the trainees, e.g. the amount of hand washing was reduced, while procedure of hand disinfection remained unchanged compared with the control group. However, the amount of used skin care cream did not differ between the both groups. This study shows that primary prevention of skin disease by regularly teaching during the training period of medi …

Winter season, frequent hand washing, and irritant patch test reactions to detergents are associated with hand dermatitis in health care workers.

BACKGROUND: Irritant hand dermatitis (IHD) is common in health care workers. OBJECTIVE: We studied endogenous irritant contact dermatitis threshold by patch testing and exogenous factors such as season and hand washing for their association with IHD in health care workers. METHODS: Irritant patch testing with sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), sodium hydroxide, and benzalkonium chloride at varying concentrations was measured in 113 health care workers. Examination for hand dermatitis occurred at 1-month intervals for a period of 6 months in the Midwestern United States. RESULTS: Positive patch te

Factors influencing hygienic behavior among students in Central Kazakhstan during COVID-19.

INTRODUCTION: Hand hygiene is a fundamental public health measure that plays a crucial role in preventing the spread of infectious diseases, particularly in communal settings such as schools. The COVID-19 pandemic heightened awareness of hygiene practices, emphasizing the need for sustained interventions to ensure long-term adherence and improved health outcomes among students. This research aims to examine the key factors that shaped students' hygiene behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic and evaluate strategies for reinforcing and sustaining these practices over time. METHODS: This study u

Prospective, randomized in vivo comparison of a dual-active waterless antiseptic versus two alcohol-only waterless antiseptics for surgical hand antisepsis.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to demonstrate the value of adding an active level of a persistent antimicrobial agent, such as chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG), to an alcohol-based surgical hand antiseptic. METHODS: The persistence of 3 waterless, brushless alcohol-based surgical hand antiseptics, including one product containing CHG, was compared. The test products were applied a total of 12 times over 5 days. Samples of aerobic bacteria were collected on days 1 and 5, on both days immediately after drying and 6 hours later, using the glove juice technique. Relative suppression of regrowth was co

[Products for hand hygiene and antisepsis: use by health professionals and relationship with hand eczema].

Hand hygiene is the most important measure for the prevention of nosocomial infection. We describe the different products available for hygiene and antisepsis of the hands and the use of these products in daily practice. Hand hygiene products such as soaps and detergents are a cause of irritant dermatitis in health professionals. This irritation is one of the principal factors affecting their use in clinical practice. Alcohol-based products are better tolerated and less irritant than soap and water; irritation should not therefore be a limiting factor in the use of these products and they are

Negotiating and Treating Lateral Canals: Report of 7 Cases.

This is a series of 7 cases in which the operator penetrated lateral canals with instruments. Two teeth presented with irreversible pulpitis, 4 with necrotic pulps, and 1 with previous treatment. Except for the teeth with pulpitis, all the others were associated with apical periodontitis. The main root canal was always relatively straight, with the lateral canals at the middle third of the root. Suggestive images of lateral canal presence were seen on periapical radiographs in five cases. The clinician introduced intentionally small hand instruments in the lateral canal in 5 cases, while the p

Epidemiology of Norovirus Outbreaks Reported to the Public Health Emergency Event Surveillance System, China, 2014⁻2017.

We conducted a retrospective analysis of norovirus outbreaks reported to the National Public Health Emergency Event Surveillance System (PHEESS) in China from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2017. We reviewed all acute gastroenteritis outbreaks (n = 692) submitted to PHEESS to identify the frequency, seasonality, geographic distribution, setting, and transmission mode of outbreaks due to norovirus. A total of 616 norovirus outbreaks resulting in 30,848 cases were reported. Among these outbreaks, 571 (93%) occurred in school settings including 239 (39%) in primary schools, 136 (22%) in childcar

No evidence of transmission of bacteria between reptiles and a CF patient--a case report of a young adult CF patient and reptiles.

A microbiological study was undertaken to assess the risk of infection to a CF patient from a collection of pet reptiles, particularly atypical mycobacteria. This study helped to verify that the reptiles under the care of the CF patient did not harbour bacterial organisms that would normally be pathogenic to CF patients. However, the chronic carriage of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and other pathogens in the CF patient may constitute a greater risk of infection to the animals being handled. Therefore, we recommend stringent infection control precautions by CF patients and their pets, particularly ad

Molecular epidemiology of multidrug-resistant organisms on mobile phones: an observational study conducted at a German university hospital.

BACKGROUND: Mobile phones are integral to modern clinical workflows and increasingly bridge clinical and private environments. Yet, their role as portable high-touch surfaces in infection prevention remains insufficiently characterized. We hence assessed prevalence and molecular epidemiology of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO) on mobile phones used by healthcare workers (HCWs) at a German university hospital and compared them with devices used by non-HCWs. METHODS: In this 30-month cross-sectional study, 232 HCW and 241 non-HCW mobile phones were analyzed to determine MDRO prevalence and

Distribution of household disinfection kits during the 2014-2015 Ebola virus outbreak in Monrovia, Liberia: The MSF experience.

During the initial phase of the 2014-2016 Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in Monrovia, Liberia, all hospitals' isolation capacities were overwhelmed by the sheer caseload. As a stop-gap measure to halt transmission, Medecins sans Frontieres (MSF) distributed household disinfection kits to those who were at high risk of EVD contamination. The kit contained chlorine and personal protective materials to be used for the care of a sick person or the handling of a dead body. This intervention was novel and controversial for MSF. This paper shed the light on this experience of distribution in Monr

Photodecomposition of iodinated contrast media and subsequent formation of toxic iodinated moieties during final disinfection with chlorinated oxidants.

Large amount of iodinated contrast media (ICM) are found in natural waters (up to μg.L(-)(1) levels) due to their worldwide use in medical imaging and their poor removal by conventional wastewater treatment. Synthetic water samples containing different ICM and natural organic matter (NOM) extracts were subjected to UV254 irradiation followed by the addition of chlorine (HOCl) or chloramine (NH2Cl) to simulate final disinfection. In this study, two new quantum yields were determined for diatrizoic acid (0.071 mol.Einstein(-1)) and iotalamic acid (0.038 mol.Einstein(-1)) while values for iopromi

[Drug induced agranulocytosis. Improved prognosis due to better supportive care].

A retrospective study of 61 episodes of agranulocytosis observed in 56 patients between 1958 and 1977 is reported. The diagnosis was based on peripheral granulocyte counts below 500/mm3 and further documented by bone marrow analysis. The aim of this study was to determine whether the new guidelines for supportive care introduced in January 1973 led to an improvement in overall prognosis in this disease. Therefore, the patients were divided into two groups: the first group included 39 episodes of agranulocytosis observed between 1958-1972 and the second group 22 episodes observed between 1973-1

Viral meningitis, active and reserve components, U.S. Armed Forces, 2002-2011.

Viruses are the most common causes of meningitis, a condition characterized by inflammation of the protective membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord. During the 10-year surveillance period, there were 3,205 confirmed cases, 724 probable cases, and 2,495 suspected cases of viral meningitis among active and reserve component members. In all three categories of cases, the most common diagnoses were meningitis due to enteroviruses; however a majority of these were unspecified enteroviruses. Nearly two-thirds (64.2%) of all cases due to enteroviral infection were hospitalized; on average

White phosphorous civilian hand burns - An aid to timely treatment of a rare entity.

First discovered in 1669, white phosphorus is well known for its use in military warfare (Davis, 2002). Its application has since been expanded to include industrial disinfectants, fertilisers and fireworks (Davis, 2002). Exposure to white phosphorus can lead to severe chemical burns with high morbidity and potentially fatal systemic effects. Fortunately, civilian casualties from this potent agent are remarkably rare with few reports in the literature to date (Frank et al., 2008; Aviv et al., 2017). We present the case of a 27-year-old fisherman who sustained a chemical burn to his right hand

A Standardized Acupotomy Protocol For The Treatment of Tenosynovitis of Hand Flexor Tendons In Human Patients.

Tenosynovitis of hand flexor tendons (THFT) is a high-incidence overuse injury of the hand. Its pathological essence is a dynamic imbalance between the volume of the tendon sheath and the tendon caused by fibrous connective tissue hyperplasia in the A1 pulley region, leading to mechanical entrapment and typical clinical symptoms, including palmar pain, triggering, and limited movement. Traditional conservative treatments yield suboptimal long-term efficacy, while open surgery is associated with high trauma and complication risks, creating demand for a minimally invasive therapeutic approach.
