BACKGROUND: Split-hand/foot malformation (SHFM) is a rare congenital limb anomaly defined by the absence or hypoplasia of the central rays of the autopod. SHFM occurs as an isolated entity or part of genetic syndromes with several causative copy-number variations or monogenic alterations known to be involved in the disease pathomechanism. On the other hand, cleft lip/palate (CL/P) usually results from polygenic and environmental factors, with the complex interplay of both leading to this malformation. Pathogenic variants in FGFR1 have been linked to phenotypically distinct disorders, including

BACKGROUND: Chromosomal region 7q21.3 comprises approximately 5.2 mega base pairs that include genes DLX5/6, SHFM1, and DYNC1I1 associated with split hand/split foot malformation 1. So far, there are reports of eight families with deletion of DYNC1I1 and preserved DLX5/6 associated with ectrodactyly. From these families, only three patients did not present ectrodactyly and, unlike our patient, no other cases have been described as having craniofacial dysmorphology, mitral valve prolapse, kyphoscoliosis, inguinal herniae, or personality disorder. There is no designation described in the literat

Macrodactyly is a rare congenital limb difference manifesting as an overgrowth of one or more fingers or toes. The pathological process affects all tissues of the ray in the hand or foot. The enlargement can significantly alter the limb's appearance and impair its function. The role of a pediatrician is to distinguish isolated macrodactyly from syndromic conditions (including PIK3CA-Related Overgrowth Spectrum) or mimicking conditions to enable early interdisciplinary consultation and treatment planning. The psychological stigma associated with this often disfiguring condition necessitates sup

Partial trisomy of the short arm of chromosome 4 is considered to be a rare chromosomal disorder. Its clinical and dermatoglyphic features tend to make it a clinically recognizable syndrome. This paper describes a 2 year-old female child with the characteristic findings of frontal bossing, deep-set eyes, broad nasal bridge giving the appearance of hypertelorism, wide nares, midfacial hypoplasia, large dysplastic ears, prognathism and various hand and foot malformations. Chromosomal studies showed her to be trisomic for the distal two-thirds of the short arm of number 4. The etiology of this ch

Mutations in SALL1, the human homolog of the Drosophila spalt gene, result in Townes-Brocks' syndrome, which is characterized by hand/foot, anogenital, renal, and ear anomalies, including sensorineural deafness. spalt genes encode zinc finger transcription factors that are found in animals as diverse as worms, insects, and vertebrates. Here, we examine the effect of losing both of the spalt genes, spalt and spalt-related, in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, and report defects similar to those in humans with Townes-Brocks' syndrome. Loss of both spalt and spalt-related function in flies y

Grebe syndrome is a recessively inherited acromesomelic dysplasia. We studied, clinically and radiographically, 10 affected individuals, originating from Bahia, Brazil. The phenotype is characterized by a normal axial skeleton and severely shortened and deformed limbs, with a proximo-distal gradient of severity. The humeri and femora were relatively normal, the radii/ulnae and tibiae/fibulae were short and deformed, carpal and tarsal bones were fused, and several metacarpal and metatarsal bones were absent. The proximal and middle phalanges of the fingers and toes were invariably absent, while

The paper presents comparative clinical and laboratory characteristics of 17 cases of Lyme-arthritis (LA) and 28 cases of reactive arthritis (RA). LA and RA patients differed by age and sex. LA arose after the tick bite followed by erythema migrans or infection symptoms. In RA patients the above symptoms were absent. In LA patients arthritis was associated with typical symptoms of neuroborreliosis. The articular syndrome manifested similarly in LA and RA: arthritis was preceded by arthralgias, low limb joints and periarticular tissues were involved most frequently. The differences were: monoar

Sixteen cases from the 1980-1981 Taiwan outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) associated with central nervous system involvement were identified: nine had polio-like syndrome, four had encephalitis or encephalomyelitis, one had cerebellitis, and two had aseptic meningitis. They all had fever, five (31%) had documented myoclonic jerk, and 15 (93%) had HFMD. Their mean blood leukocyte count was 12,490/microL, and five (31%) had leukocytosis (> 15,000/microL); mean cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leukocyte count was 156/microL, CSF protein was 57 mg/dL and CSF glucose was 57 mg/dL. Hoxa13 is expressed early in the caudal mesoderm and endoderm of the developing hindgut. The tissue-specific roles of Hoxa13 function have not been described. Hand-foot-genital syndrome, a rare dominantly inherited human malformation syndrome characterized by distal extremity and genitourinary anomalies, is caused by mutations in the HOXA13 gene. We show evidence that one specific HOXA13 mutation likely acts as a dominant negative in vivo. When chick HFGa13 is overexpressed in the chick caudal endoderm early in development, caudal structural malformations occur. The phenotype is specific to HF

BACKGROUND: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic gastrointestinal disorder characterized by both visceral and somatic hyperalgesia, producing a similar effect seen with the central hypersensitivity mechanism in fibromyalgia (FM).
OBJECTIVES: The aim of the current study was to compare magnitudes of visceral and thermal hypersensitivity in IBS patients and FM patients with IBS (FM+IBS) compared with healthy controls.
METHODS: Female patients with IBS (n=12), FM+IBS (n=12), and control participants (n=13) rated pain intensity to hot water immersion (45 and 47 degrees C) of the hand/foot

Hand-foot syndrome (HFS) is the main side effect of capecitabine and affects the compression zones of the body such as the palms and soles, causing numbness, paresthesias, skin swelling or erythema, scaling, chapping, hard nodule-like blisters, and severe pain. Loss of fingerprints is also observed in some cases. Severe cases of HFS are common in the review of clinical reports. However, loss of fingerprints has not received significant attention. Two reported cases of loss of fingerprints in The New England Journal of Medicine and The BMJ have drawn attention to this side effect of capecitabin…

Papular purpuric gloves and socks syndrome (PPGSS) is a self-limited, often febrile illness with symmetric edema and erythema of the hands and feet; papular, petechial, and purpuric acral dermatosis; and mucosal lesions in children and young adults. Most of the cases of PPGSS have been reported to be caused by parvovirus B19 and other viruses. This study describes a case resulting from Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection in an adolescent male and reviews the literature.

We reported a 23-year-old female who was treated for rash due to hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD). On day 4 of hospitalization, the patient showed opsoclonus (jerky eye movements in all directions), myoclonus of the neck, trunk, and extremities, and cerebellar ataxia. Based on the changes in serum viral antibody titer, the patient was diagnosed as enterovirus 71 infection. No obvious abnormal findings were noted in head MRI. Immunoglobulin 5 g/day was administered for 3 days in the early stages of infection, and administration of methylprednisolone 500 mg/day for 3 days was repeated twice.

The association of aplasia cutis congenita of the scalp with distal malformations of the limbs is known as Adams-Oliver syndrome. Other reported associations include palatine or auricular malformations, cardiovascular alterations, and spina bifida. Multiple hereditary patterns have been described for this condition, and sporadic cases have also been reported. We report an infant with Adams-Oliver syndrome associated with intracranial calcifications in whom no evidence of intrauterine infection could be demonstrated.
