This study was done on 5 patients suffering from tropical sprue (8-10 years' duration). Serum vitamin E level was significantly low in these patients. Cell-mediated immune mechanism assessed by using 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene, a skin-sensitizing hapten, was also depressed. Polyneuropathy was also observed. Repletion of vitamin deficiency was associated with marked improvement in T-cell functions and neuropathy.

A modified Polonovski reaction has been employed to obtain the N-demethylated metabolite of the neuroleptic drug cyamemazine. The synthesis involves N-oxide formation, isolation of the corresponding N-oxide, and a FeSO(4)·7H(2)O mediated Polonovski reaction to afford the desired monodesmethyl cyamemazine. Adult respiratory distress syndrome occurred in a patient who had received dextran as a routine antithrombotic agent during and after free TRAM breast reconstruction. Although most patients who receive dextran have no adverse reaction, particularly after hapten inhibition by dextran 1 infusion, the serious nature of this complication in an elective operation calls into question the continuing routine use of dextran in microsurgery.

Tolerance to DNCB induced by feeding guinea-pigs with the same hapten has been reversed by a single treatment with cyclophosphamide. This is paralleled by a return of the ability of T cells to proliferate in the draining lymph node following sensitization. Certain quantitative differences between this system and that previously described using intravenous DNBSO3 have been revealed. These may indicate some difference between these two mechanisms of tolerance induction.

Patients with congenital giant nevi (CGN), which can compromise quality of life and progress to melanoma, have limited treatment options. Choi et al. have demonstrated that topical application of a proinflammatory hapten for alopecia treatment [squaric acid dibutylester (SADBE)] caused nevus regression and prevented melanoma in an Nras mouse CGN model.
