Heart failure care in low- and middle-income countries: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Heart failure places a significant burden on patients and health systems in high-income countries. However, information about its burden in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is scant. We thus set out to review both published and unpublished information on the presentation, causes, management, and outcomes of heart failure in LMICs. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Medline, Embase, Global Health Database, and World Health Organization regional databases were searched for studies from LMICs published between 1 January 1995 and 30 March 2014. Additional unpublished data were requested fr

Implementing a First Nation data-sovereign and agile modelling platform for pandemic management: lessons from Manitoba.

This paper describes lessons learned from a partnership between the First Nations Health and Social Secretariat of Manitoba (FNHSSM) and researchers at the University of Manitoba to develop a community-led COVID-19 modelling platform. The envisioned tool would allow First Nations leaders to input local data and generate outputs to support decision-making using a stochastic, age-stratified agent-based model of COVID-19 transmission. Although the platform was not fully operationalized during the project, several important lessons emerged. First, the COVID-19 pandemic placed significant demands o

Causes of delayed antenatal care at an urban community health centre in Gauteng, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Maternal and perinatal deaths remain significant despite various strategies that have been implemented. Antenatal care (ANC) for pregnant women is crucial in reducing maternal and child mortality. Delayed ANC is associated with several maternal and foetal complications, which can be prevented through timely intervention. Previous studies have identified various factors contributing to the late initiation of ANC, and although recommendations have been made and implemented, there has been no impact. Objectives were to determine and rank the factors contributing to the delayed initiat

Barriers to healthcare coordination in market-based and decentralized public health systems: a qualitative study in healthcare networks of Colombia and Brazil.

Although integrated healthcare networks (IHNs) are promoted in Latin America in response to health system fragmentation, few analyses on the coordination of care across levels in these networks have been conducted in the region. The aim is to analyse the existence of healthcare coordination across levels of care and the factors influencing it from the health personnel' perspective in healthcare networks of two countries with different health systems: Colombia, with a social security system based on managed competition and Brazil, with a decentralized national health system. A qualitative, expl

Self-management challenges and psychosocial support needs in clean intermittent catheterization: a qualitative study of individuals with neurogenic bladder and caregivers.

BACKGROUND: Clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) is widely regarded as the preferred approach to bladder management for individuals with neurogenic bladder (NB). Nevertheless, a considerable gap persists between evidence and clinical practice: patients and caregivers frequently encounter self-management barriers that compromise clinical outcomes during CIC. This qualitative study explores these barriers to provide an empirical foundation for developing tailored strategies that improve quality of care. DESIGN: A descriptive qualitative study. METHODS: From August to October 2025, a conven

Parents on the web: risks for quality management of cough in children.

BACKGROUND: Health information on the Internet, with respect to common, self-limited childhood illnesses, has been found to be unreliable. Therefore, parents navigating on the Internet risk finding advice that is incomplete or, more importantly, not evidence-based. The importance that a resource such as the Internet as a source of quality health information for consumers should, however, be taken into consideration. For this reason, studies need to be performed regarding the quality of material provided. Various strategies have been proposed that would allow parents to distinguish trustworthy
